Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@93pilots I hear you on Reed. We’d have been full pay for at least one year and that was enough to take it off the list. It was S17’s dream school for a long time but once he zeroed in on major it dropped down.

It did also drop down based on perceived intensity. He has a very close friend there who is now a junior. The friend is actually taking a semester off right now. A combination of too intense along with financials as he was basically working full time while there to pull it off. He did get a decent FA package but there was still a gap with the EFC. That said, his friend LOVES it and definitely plans to go back but his comments on the intensity really caused S17 to re think applying. We might have let him had he pushed but he didn’t.

@citymama9 and @kt1969 – somewhat similar story to @Hankster1361 at our house. S has a GPA in the range but a strong upward trend may have helped (ended sophomore year below a 3.1, but junior and senior year have been in 3.8-3.9 territory). Also decent test scores (32 ACT and over 700’s on the subject tests). Not asking for a lot of financial aid probably helped too. Will never know for sure. He applied to a lot of schools because didn’t have a clue how any of this would play out.

@eandesmom thanks for the extra color on Reed. It’s a very distinctive place, and I think they are very into their reputation for intensity, it’s hard to tell how much is reality and how much is myth/exaggeration. The real life stories help with that.

@93pilots --very similar indeed. S17 had maybe a 3.0 after freshman year, and 3.8-3.9 jr./sr. years. (I’m now hoping S19 trends upward too!). Still, some schools really look at the overall GPA and can’t get past it, I think particularly the big publics (where lots of the engineering is). I can’t blame them really, since there are so many good students out there, they have to make decisions based on something!

For what it’s worth, just posted some impressions of recent college tour…didn’t want to hijack this thread, by including it here.

@citymama9 and @techmom99 I think that @kt1969 is right regarding reaches. I know of a number of seniors in our community with tippy top grades and test scores and notable ECs that are now facing a string of rejections and WL from schools like Case Western and Wash U and up the line. Those students that applied only to their local state flagship and a bunch of reachy private schools are now incredibly anxious about the final few schools they are waiting on. At that level of competitiveness, there is very little to distinguish those that get accepted from those that get denied, so much so that the process seems capricious and arbitrary. More than ever, I am firmly convinced that a well-balanced list that emphasizes matches is the way to go.

Congrats to all with good news and hugs to those that were disappointed by recent decisions.

Similar story to @93pilots and @Hankster1361. My son’s GPA fits in the lower range of this board. But he has a 1520/1600 SAT score, and was commended National Merit. Upward trend, did poorly second semester freshman year and pulled himself back up. Honors/AP classes & is accelerated and strong in math/science. (A’s in AP Calc junior year.) Plus our schools is known for having grade deflation. (Kids routinely get B and even C yet 5’s on AP classes.)

Plus we are not expecting merit. For that he would have to have targeted a whole different set of schools.

My son has whittled his list down to 3. UCSC, UofO, and CU Boulder. Have convinced him FINALLY to go visit CU Boulder for accepted students day over break. It’s the only one he hasn’t visited. I’m buying him flights today.

The competing reason to keep looking at UofO & CU Boulder vs. in state UCSC is he really wants Marching Band. It’s $15 K more a year for the OOS schools that have marching bands, but both my husband & mother tell me let the kid go where he wants & they will fork out the $$. Who am I to argue with that.

In news that makes you go hmmmmm…

S17 was admitted to the school of music at UPS. He never applied to the school of music. His congrats came with the notice of no scholarship. Good thing he took it off the list or we’d have to somehow get him out of the school of music. LOL! Oh well, I guess it’s nice to know he was good enough to major in music even if they didn’t offer him any money for it.

S is VERY conflicted about his 3 final schools. Frankly, so am I. BLEH.

I have a LOT of updates to do to the sheet but will try to get it out soon. As always, feel free to PM me to ensure I don’t miss stuff!

@citymama9 I’ll be updating the results list soon so you can see stats by school which is helpful. We definitely have a range of stats represented. I do think some of those reach schools are valid options for kids in the gpa range…if you don’t need merit. My S falls on the upper end of the UW range but has dismal test scores. He’d have had a shot at some reachier schools but with our inability to be full pay despite what FAFSA and PROFILE think, we didn’t go there.

@93pilots it’s only one data point. He actually took last semester off, S is pretty sure he is back there this semester. I do think that if he didn’t have to work it might not be nearly the stress it seems to have been but I have no way of knowing. They do pride themselves on intensity but it’s a unique kind…more of a competing with yourself than with your peers it seems. It’s funny though, from a “reach” standpoint I think S would have had a better chance at Reed than some but he’d have folded under t

@techmom99 I’ve had that same feeling at times but the reality is that while S might have gotten in to some very lovely schools I still don’t think the merit would have been there and it’s tight enough with what did come in that is at the upper end of our range. My only real regret is not forcing him to apply to our flagship. It’s not the right school for him and I am not at all sure he’d have gotten in but if he did, the bragging rights for him would have been nice.

@eandesmom - NY doesn’t have a designated flagship school, but I would say that currently Stony Brook and Binghamton are the top dogs. When oldest son and D were applying 8 and 9 years ago, Geneseo was THE school to get into but none of techson17’s friends even applied to it this year. Techson’s desired program was not offered at any of those schools so he didn’t even bother applying. Just found out that my friend’s son, with a 3.8 and a 25 ACT got into the music program at Bing. He auditioned on his instrument. It is kind of humorous that your son was accepted into the music program when he hadn’t applied to it. Was he accepted to the program he did apply to?

@eandesmom wow that is random and weird about UPS. What are the final three? Ursinus, WWU, and…?

@mamaedefamilia could not agree more re balanced list. Also for EA applications where possible to reduce spring stress.

@techmom99 UPS is a LAC so you just apply to the school, not to a major. With the exception of the school of music lol. You have to be accepted to the school first before you can be accepted to the school of music. Apparently despite MULTIPLE communications that he was a non major applying for a scholarship, they didn’t get the memo. It is a lovely music program though, and somewhat competitive (I’ve no idea how much though as they don’t publish that info) so it’s a bit flattering if nothing else.

@93pilots final 3 are Ursinus, WWU and UVM. Pro’s and cons to all 3 in terms of fit, academics, program strength and of course…financials.

Wow, wow, wow. <:-P =D> for everyone with new acceptances! @eandesmom - weird but flattering acceptance to music at UPS! @93pilots -Reed is very cool, not to mention Kenyon, and the big money from Denison. @Hankster1361 – Wash-StL is also very cool! Bummer for the wait listing (love how TacoSon calls that a 0.5 on the acceptance column!)

Sorry I got so far behind this weekend, but I am smiling for all our kids!

Still just waiting - the only news CoyoteSon got was that three of the six schools will announce this week (by March 25) instead of dragging it out all the way to March 31st.

So, we rented “Arrival” with friends - great movie, especially if you like the fiction in your sci-fi. And CoyoteSon and I both learned to solder as he and I both volunteered at a “Maker” event this weekend. Just sharing the “what can I do to stop thinking about college limbo?” tips from CoyoteHouse!

Even with the list @eandesmom has made. I’m lost and would love a quick recap of where decisions are standing. Top contenders, schools still waiting for results and/or if you have made a decision.

S17 has heard from all his schools. Deciding between UC Santa Cruz, University of Oregon, and University of Colorado Bolder. Will be visiting CU Boulder in a bit over two weeks so won’t be making any decisions before then.

This time round it’s a lot tougher than for my older D12. At this stage in the game she figured out her top choice, when she got that acceptance with a small scholarship we were basically done.

Very exciting to see all the acceptances here! I’ve been following along. My DD’s boyfriend was waitlisted at his top choice, Franklin & Marshall. Any idea how quickly these waitlists move, if at all  Thanks!

@curiositycat333 Glad you posted that cause I’m lost too! I hope your son enjoys his trip to Colorado and is able to make a decision he is happy with afterwards.

My D is still waiting on a decision from UCSB. Right now her top contender is UC Davis. We are visiting Davis during Spring break.

@curiositycat333 and @LilyMoon I think we’re all lost!

I’m just glad my son is down to 2 schools and that his list has remained stable (for a month the 2 finalists kept changing for honestly no apparent reason?!?). He is doing an overnight next weekend as part of the admitted student day and then a decision should be feasible (or more confusing). I think I see the light at the end but I’ve thought that before.

I thought we were down to two, but Denison is not off the table yet. They offer a fly-in program for accepted students and my D and her BFF are going to check it out at an overnight April 13-14. We will be using the following week to attend an accepted students’ day at UMass, and perhaps, if I can figure out a way to make it happen, we’ll visit Allegheny (she’s been once before, but would like to see it again). She’s willing to keep an open mind about the small schools, so I want to take advantage of that. So, for my D, we’re down to 4 schools: UVM, UMass, Denison, and Allegheny.
