Parents of the HS Class of 2018 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

I read ACT scores tend to come out Wednesdays and Fridays. I keep checking and checking. DS took his on the 9th with out essay. I hope it is in tomorrow!

Anyone else on here looking into NAU?

Texas1820 does your S want to stay in state?

labegg UC Santa Cruz would be super pricey for OOS. It is a marvelous place to hike and jog. My son mountain bikes there. But, many (my self included from way back when) may find the social scene some what laking.

o.k., 4 applications submitted tonight! 4 more to go (unless there are last minute add on;) Now to figure out audition dates!

Congratulations on the submitted apps!

@MACmiracle thank you! Now she has supplemental arts applications and more essays, but I’m letting her rest tonight, lol!

My DD2018 has long hair that is naturally wavy/curly in some strands and semi straight in others. It can usually be found in a sloppy bun or pony tail, on a good day maybe a small braid thrown in. She straightens it maybe once a week. Straightening certainly was more often an occurrence when a year or two ago. Definitely as she has gained self confidence her “look” has gotten more relaxed and she realized all the damage she was doing straightening. Now she does what she wants depending on what is happening on a given day, cheer practice, games being a big influence on the look.

She is, however, obsessed with make-up. Fortunately she works hard to perfect the no make-up, make-up look, lol. She loves a face mask. She has never plucked an eyebrow, nor have I. I never saw the point or am I just lazy. I think it rubbed off on my kids. DD doesn’t wear lipstick unless she has to for performance or big event. That is her with the brown hair in my avi, I think that was day two after a straightening and it had started to get wavy again. Most of her friends also have long hair, most leave it pretty natural these days. There is a girl on her cheer team that had the most beautiful mid length afro, who just clipped her hair all the back to maybe 1/2 inch. She is absolutely stunning no matter her hairstyle, but honestly she is the only one I can think of with short hair. The big trend here seems to be colored hair, like blue or pink or green, and permanent not the wash out stuff. I have to say I hate it. This is coming from a women who rocked a purple and bleach blond faux hawk in high school. I think it looks really awesome for about 1 week when the color is vibrant, then the color just seems to fade to a very sad dull greyed version of whatever the color was.

DD2016 has a shoulder length bob, most of her friends have long hair. Most do not bother straightening anymore, I am going to guess college classes and studying are more important than hair these days.

@Themathaw he would like to go out of state. He has applied to 2 Texas schools. Baylor and Tech. We need for him to find a Texas school that he is ok going to. Baylor is not it $$$$$. Tech is so afforadable, we will have to see how every thing plays out financially with the out of state schools.

Oops

@MACmiracle @amom2girls I’m sorry to see this disagreement between you – and I’m sorry it’s my question that brought you to it. I should realize that this sort of subject is bound to cause conflict as someone will inevitably describe a person or group that sounds way too much like someone’s daughter or son. But we have to remember that people are working on personal experience (ie. feeling less attuned with current styles and/or not quite up to par financially) and with a very limited group of people (ie. nieces and friends). Yes, of course, we hope that nobody is judging our kids through such limited experience but usually our kids are going to have to prove themselves. I’m always hoping that my youngest doesn’t get judged for having no hair or eyebrows/eyelashes but of course she does. And I’ve had to learn to tame the mama lion and not fulminate with my eyes a 12 year-old girl or 72 year-old grandmother for staring at her.

@amom2girls Congratulations on the applications!

@Themathaw and @labegg UC Santa Cruz came in as affordable for us on our strict budget (though travel would most likely take us over budget).

@Kardinalschnitt no worries. @MACmiracle explained her position and I accept that she did not mean to stereotype in a negative way. Most of the time I’m nodding my head in agreement with her posts:) I just think we should all be careful typecasting kids. Since I have girls, they are my particular concern. I just know my daughter has pretty bad anxiety and I’d hate to have someone looking at her on a night when she is out in the city with her girlfriends and they are dressed up and have make up on. We chose to live and raise our kids in a diverse city so the girls would be raised to see and interact with a lot of different people every day. My daughter is a fierce protector when she sees anyone being bullied. I actually think its is a really good conversation.

Thanks for clarifying!

My aim in asking the question was to start a conversation about the way many colleges are presenting themselves on the surface. If I just browse quickly I find a very homogenous group of kids on the first pages – or even in the campus tour videos. I found it odd because I don’t remember the US being so homogenous. I’m absolutely certain that if I flew over there today I would see all sorts of kids (girls) everywhere. Yet, I’m not seeing this diversity presented on the main pages of the websites. When I dig deeper, however, I find the kids in the various videos about housing, honors programs, majors, etc much more diverse. If I look through clubs, I find photos galleries of the girls at Gamma Rho Lambda or Women in Science or even Student Council and the various sports. That’s where I find the diversity I thought existed (and I’m not talking only about straightened hair or short hair or colored hair). I probably should have clarified better my question because it almost sounds like I’m saying that all these long-haired girls don’t or won’t accept my daughter – or that she won’t accept them, which isn’t what I was saying at all.

Then again, this thread is not supposed to be about how colleges present themselves. I don’t know how much we need to stay on topic in this thread, though.

@Kardinalschnitt Yes, I’ve noticed that very few young American girls or women have short hair. They almost all have long hair. I’ve always had short hair, so I notice. I think it’s a marked difference from northern Europeans. And yep, colored hair is really big.

On diversity, I think many colleges are not that diverse, especially small liberal arts or selective ones. I’ve actually noticed the opposite phenomenon, college websites/videos showing more diversity than they actually have if you look at the stats.

I’m sorry for getting this thread off-track by misunderstanding your question @Kardinalschnitt .

But I think it’s a parent thread so parent questions relating to college can be discussed.

Regarding the recent posts, it’s not always comfortable to be corrected but it can be helpful for myself and others reading. I brought my personal experiences up with a very specific group I am dealing with. I realize are not fair to characterize all kids out there with a certain style, and I wouldn’t want anyone to be influenced by my comments. @amom2girls was justified in calling me out.

Lately, I’ve been throwing away a lot of college mailings lately without looking at them, but I have memories of college brochures that highlight different students which seem to try to hit every possible group. I know there was a discussion on CC about this: the small group of students on the quad with every race represented. Maybe the colleges are truly diverse or maybe they are hoping to attract a more diverse student body.

Now if a college isn’t making efforts showing diversity in their catalog or on their website, it could be that they are trying to appeal to students in the demographic they usually draw from, not because they don’t want a diverse student body. ??

I think the level of diversity in the US depends a lot on the area.

@amom2girls @MACmiracle @Kardinalschnitt You all are a class act! I appreciate how you each handled the situation with respect for each other’s feelings while still making your points. You are excellent role models for your girls! :x Just another reason I love this forum…

@MACmiracle Oh I don’t know that you truly misunderstood my question; you did defend me by saying that I’m concerned about my dd being accepted and that is true. I appreciated that.

I do think amom2girls saw some things in your words that weren’t necessarily there. I understood you were writing about a very specific group of girls. And I did not understand wanting to go out and party and/or shop or to wear makeup as a “moral failing” but as descriptors. But we each react to things that are very personal so we have to be very careful – and I think we should be even though it’s not always easy. Lord knows how many times I have stuck my foot directly in my mouth.

We don’t get mailings so I hadn’t thought that maybe those present a different/wider picture.

I do get the sense that there can be a lot of cultural diversity presented without much taste/fashion/hairstyle/lifestyle diversity if that makes sense. It’s only natural in some ways. It’s marketing after all.

@tish02 Thanks! Sorry, didn’t see you there.

So I paid the deposit for ISU. Kinda exciting! We keep exploring options but keep coming back to ISU. We have till May to back out, of course.

It is all marketing. DD just got her acceptance letter from Ole Miss…it had a great big picture of a group of kids linked arm in arm…a black girl and boy, an asian kid, an indian kid, a hispanic kid and a caucasian boy, if I recall correctly. A virtual rainbow of multicultural diversity. It made us laugh, Ole miss is something like 73% white, 16% black, 2% asian, 2% hispanic, not to mention 56% female. It’s lack of diversity and gender balance being some of the reasons DD is not so keen on it and why it falls lower on her desirability list. The staged photo hasn’t helped their cause.

I also notice a lot of pictures of guys in colleges that are more heavily female.

It’s hard to judge by photos but I just did a very unscientific analysis and the catalog in frint of me has lower than 4% African Americans but there are people who appear to be African American on 24% of the pages. But it’s still pretty obvious they are in the minority.
