Parents of the HS Class of 2018 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@chippedtoof Yes, she has applied to SDSU and SLO. SLO is a reach and I highly doubt she’ll get in. She is looking at business or economics majors at all…can’t remember exactly what she settled on for each school. I’m hopeful for acceptances at SDSU, UCSC and CSULB. If she gets into any others she’ll be happy. She does have an acceptance at ASU with a nice scholarship, so at least she knows she will be going to college!

Honestly, I have to hand it to all of you California residents the whole college system, competitive nature of the admissions process, multiple essays is so overwhelming. I do not understand the California A-G GPA recalculation. DD initially thought she wanted to apply to a few CA schools and I said no, we are not playing the game.

Fingers are crossed that everyone waiting for decisions received the admissions they are hoping for, because my goodness the process is daunting!

@bacmom maybe we will see you in San Diego. My D has applied to SDSU and SLO as well, along with UCLA and UCI. Says her first choice is SDSU for instate. Also have a few OOS merit plays as well. Good luck!!

Last app submitted last night! So happy. It’ll be nice not putting in credit card numbers for ACT scores, transcripts, applications, CSS, etc. Now the wait, ugh. And scholarship applications, lol.

Good luck to you too @my2caligirls! UCI is on our list too. A reach, but you never know what might happen!

Good luck to all the UC apps from this corner of CC! :slight_smile: Last year’s thread had some success stories so hopefully that energy will channel itself to this year >:D<

Son just submitted his UC apps last night as well. Whew! Now, on to the last batch of applications after EA apps and UCs.

Did not bother applying to UCLA since it is ridiculously competitive, and S was not interested in UCB after visiting. We did tour UCI and we all really liked the campus. We did not expect to like it as much as we did, so we are hopeful for that one. They are also improving the campus by building new housing and adding a shopping center across the street.

Good Luck to all! UCs can often be surprising in their admissions, so you never know…

DD18 has gotten acceptances from Juniata and Elizabethtown so far. We are curious how the money will work out compared to the NPCs that we ran. Since her FAFSA was selected for verification, we need to wait until we get requests from each school to get that ball rolling. She did get merit from Juniata, not sure yet about E-town as she hasn’t gotten home to see if it’s included with the official letter. At least we know she has somewhere to go for sure!

@AnxietyMom Congratulations on the acceptances!!! Elizabethtown’s scholarship award levels are generous are very clearly listed on the website.

I love Etown! My oldest graduated from there and my D18’s app is just waiting on transcripts.

@MACmiracle Thanks! The E-town merit aid is a little unclear for her based solely on the site, her school doesn’t rank and I have concerns that the high school may have sent her SAT score (despite our request that it be excluded from her transcript) which was lower that the official ACT score we sent but would qualify her for Founders (if rank was not an issue). I think she is leaning heavily towards E-town, having toured and done an overnight. They have a fantastic social work program which is what she would major in there. As long as we can get the net price down to about $20k per year out of our pocket (she will be taking federal loans), including housing/meals, they are likely the school to beat. Seems possible with the NPC calculator. Fingers-crossed. My husband and I can definitely see her there, and she can as well though she still has a couple other schools that are appealing despite not having the BSW option.

@AnxietyMom I wouldn’t worry about the SAT. If the ACT is better, I’m sure they’ll use that. I hope you hear back soon.

I’d be very curious about how the Juniata merit compares to Etown. You’ll have to let us know.

S just checked his Oregon State University portal and he was admitted!

It reads, application received 11/1, admitted 11/29. He was shocked to hear good news and so soon. I am sooo happy that he is going somewhere. We are OOS, no word on merit, but he is in Pre-CS so it could be a good option for him. We will have to visit.

@stardustmom Go Mighty Ducks!

@Anxietymom here is a link with accredited BSW programs in PA.

You can also look at Messiah College and maybe Eastern University.
Juniata and Misericordia give good merit also.

Run their net price calculators.

@labegg Thanks, but OSU is actually Beaver Nation. OU are Ducks. OSU is stronger in STEM and OU in liberal arts, which is why son decided to apply there rather than more well-known OU. :slight_smile:

@AnxietyMom Congrats on the acceptances.

My son’s first acceptance was Juniata with the $25K Calvert Ellis Scholarship. No financial aid packet received as of yet. The financial aid calculator/NPC came up with an family responsibility of $15K. It was good to see an acceptance with merit considering he does not have the strongest GPA and test scores.

My son was just admitted to his ED school though so he has to withdraw from all the other schools. I know he received a full tuition scholarship but I am unsure of the financial aid for the rest. I am just happy he is going to college and has good opportunities.

Eastern is one that isn’t talked about much here but I know one kid there now and one who is going next year.

The first is very, very low income transfer and she must have got good scholarships and/or aid because the mom was praising them for their financial assistance.

The other girl is middle income and that mom was really lamenting her D’s SAT score because she didn’t think she’d be able to go to college at all, despite having a very high gpa and amazing talent. I knew she was interested in Eastern so I told her Eastern was test optional. Her D applied and I think she got the highest level of merit listed on the website. She may be getting a talent scholarship besides.

Go Eastern!

Also, both families are Catholic. Some Catholic families worry about their kids fitting in at more conservative or evangelical schools, but both moms talked about how they felt very welcome and were treated very kindly.

S got his first acceptance today, from McDaniel College with a 25K scholarship.

@mstomper That’s great! Congratulations! <:-P
