Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@mstomper you can have your S16 do a FAFSA renewal and then click on the link at the bottom after submitting his FAFSA where it asks if you need to do a FAFSA for another child. It should then transfer some of the parent information already.

Thanks, @mommdc. We actually havenā€™t done one for S16 before. He had a big scholarship at a public university that wasnā€™t going to give any grant aid. Heā€™s applying to a LAC now, so heā€™s likely to get some grant money (although maybe not for the spring).

With D15 on track to graduate this spring and S18 on academic merit scholarship, this is the first time in 4 years that I do not have to fill out FAFSA. Very happy about that. I get a break until S22 applies to colleges. Now, if I could only figure out how to avoid filling out tax returnsā€¦

Oh, I donā€™t mind filling out tax returns! The child credit is doubling for 2018 and we should be able to get some AOTC for the two college students.

3 days and counting until we hit Stateside for 2 weeks with son

@Whistlingal safe travels, enjoy the time with your son!

I had a great visit with S this weekend. I like his friends and roommate. Heā€™s really is where heā€™s meant to be.

@glido Sorry to hear about your DD ā€“ I hope that by now, she is feeling much better. Iā€™m trying to catch up on all the posts Iā€™ve missed since dropping DS off in August. Not only did I lose daily contact with him (he is not big on keeping in touch) but I am taking my last class to complete my masterā€™s in library science and just havenā€™t been able to keep in contact with my CC family too. Hope everyoneā€™s kids have been doing well and surviving midterms!

Just got off the phone with my D. Wow, is she busy with all sorts of ECs. My non athletic, introverted kid is on a sports team, doing a business EC, going to parties at her school and a couple of other schools, and is simply trying to take advantage of whatever opportunities her school offers that sheā€™s interested in. Sheā€™s definitely living her best life. I think sheā€™s studying pretty hard too - guess weā€™ll find out more about that when grades come out. So far, so good!

We have survived mid-terms - DD says she is on track for at least a 3.75 for the semester. Works for me!

really nervous for this

Yep, Midterms time:
A+
A-
A+
A
Not Available.

Ummm, ā€œNot Available?ā€

Midterms have come and gone and so far, so good. She is limited to taking 4 classes the first semester and she has an A in all four classes. She camped out yesterday morning in order to get tickets to the annual basketball season opener (not a game, more of a introduction to the team) and was successful in getting her ticket and we are all excited to see her next weekend for Family Weekend!

Midterms are over for D as well. I hear reports of test scores now and then but donā€™t really know what her current grades are. Sheā€™s taking 18 hours which scares me but so far she seems to be handling it as far as I can tell. She and her sister come home for break this weekend. Iā€™m going to have to shop for real food! Cereal for dinner is not going to fly.

@suzy100 - one of my co-workers son went off to college this year as well, we generally eat an brought in lunch about twice a week together. She hasnā€™t been participating all week, evidently, she has not been shopping. LOL Her son, the athlete and major consumer of groceries is gone and her groove is off. She went to make a sandwich the other day, the bread was moldy and the meat was slimy. She was shocked, she is trying to get used to things not moving out of the fridge as fast and figuring out how much less to cook/buy.

Meanwhile, I eat at my desk until she gets it together

@SnowflakeDogMom I can relate re: grocery shopping but for us itā€™s more changes in types of food vs. just quantities. I miss heading to the farmers market every Saturday with him.

We did get to talk last night and all seems well. He has joined two clubs, met his honors mentor and attended a session about the study abroad program. So glad he sounds happy!

Brag moment following midterms!
Talked with DD this morning, she is working on a cover letter for a student ambassador type position and was looking for a bit of guidance.

She let me know she had to calculate her GPA for the app. There was this weird silence, and then she busted out with "my English and Biology professors donā€™t give minuses, an A is An A so my GPA is 4.0! I could feel her beaming thru the phone.

We went to visit DS18 for Family Weekend at UTD and despite of the torrential rain had a great visit! I was so happy to see heā€™s so comfortable in his college life, he has great roommates and that heā€™s made so may friends! I was able to take him out for some shopping (he needed shoes and a winter coat since it get cold in Dallas) and his dad was able to help him with debugging code (turns out there was nothing wrong with the code but the tool he was using was broken!) Now if he can just find his groove in discrete math!

Listening to D playing piano and singing from the other room.:heart::heart:

Talking of food, I know UCLA is supposed to have the best on-campus dining, but almost the only photos we get from S18 are of whatever new and exciting meal he had today.,.
