I’m not taking AP Biology next year. It’d be in 10th grade. Sorry for the confusion, @MichiganGeorgia
Gotcha. But you’re in the classes you want to be in next year?
We found out about 2 weeks ago that DD got approved for out of district. She is our third. Her brother is a HS senior this year and her sister is heading into junior year in college.
Classes requested
Hon English 9
Hon Algebra 2
Hon Biology
Hon World History
PE
Chorus
Band or Art
Spanish 2 (repeat)
She took Spanish 1 & 2 in middle school but it was a mess. The regular teacher quit half through DD’s first year which left them with a long term sub who spoke no Spanish. The second year they had a 2nd year teacher who gave them “open everything” tests. That teacher was fired about a month before the year ended. There is no way DD could go into Spanish 3 right now even though she ended the year with an A.
Well, due to a little twist of fate, DD will be starting HS in the building where both of her parents teach. She’s very conflicted about this reality and is still adjusting.
My son’s 9th grade schedule (performing arts magnet school):
AP Human Geography
Latin I
Accelerated Geometry
String Techniques (music)
Concert Orchestral
Honors English
Integrated Science
Fundamentals of Dance (PE credit)
They have a block schedule with 4 classes a day.
We’re in the second week of school. We had to do some switching of D’s schedule, so now its:
English 1 (regular freshman English)
Geometry/Trigonometry Honors
Biology 1 Honors
French 1
Women’s Choir
Drawing & Painting 2
Originally D was in PE for the last slot. One year of PE is a graduation requirement. But she also has some ongoing orthopedic (knee) issues so the doctor ordered No PE this quarter. So we substituted Drawing & Painting 2, which required getting the art teacher to (reluctantly) waive the prerequisite, which was Studio Art 1. D will still have to satisfy the PE requirement eventually, Probably she will do one semester this summer through summer school.
I’d like to join. I’m a member of Parents of 2016 group and it has been so helpful having others to go through this process with. I have a DS16 who we’re navigating the college app process with right now, and I’m trying desperately to make sure DS19 is not neglected in the process. We started school this past Tues . He took Algebra 1 H and Spanish 1 H in 8th grade. His schedule for this year is:
Geometry H
English 1 H
Biology 1H
Spanish 2 H
PE
Keyboarding and Computer Aps
World Geography H
I just got back on Sunday from taking my older D (HS Class of 2015) to move in day/orientation at Pomona. Saying good-bye was bittersweet. In the meanwhile, younger D is settling in to her freshman year in high school.
@Corinthian we moved our D15 into Pitt this Monday. I am missing her. I think D19 is missing her too. As soon as we got back home yesterday D19 went into D15’s room and started tidying up D15’s trinkets. Apparently she told her sister she would do it back when D15 was panic-packing.
D19 starts school tomorrow. New campus (the school moved) so a bit exciting but same friends so that will be comforting.
She still needs a new lunchbox. Her old one is ratty and she is so picky about a new one. She wants a quilted type - I guess we will look online.
@scholarme Does she want a Vera Bradley? They are all quilted…
2019hope Oh, hubby, who is our ebay shopper & occasional seller, found her something.
She would love Vera Bradley but too expensive.
Thanks!!
@scholarme oh good! Btw, I thought I’d be thrilled to get started on the high school path-to-success… but it’s all about finding someone to sit with at lunch… bringing the correct color shirt to dance class…and getting to the bus stop by 6:40 am.
Congratulations to all who have brought their babies to college!
My college kid doesn’t go back until mid Sept and the public school kids start the day after labor day so we are still on summer hours.
Still on summer hours until labor day as well. Getting nervous though…both S19 and D20 starting new schools and they are a bit “quirky.” Just hoping they meet a few really good friends and do well academically. D16 started college apps and D14 back at college.Fun!
Does anyone have any suggestions
on how not to neglect DS19 while trying to get DS16 ready to submit college applications ? We’ve been extremely busy all summer with tours and interviews etc, so DS19 has gotten more attention recently . We’ve been in school about 2 weeks and DS19 is having a little difficulty getting back into the groove of being in school. I feel like I’m fussing at him all of the time.
Hello HS19 Parents! DS19 is my third of four children. I have a S13 (now College17), D16 (yep-this year-so we’re in the thick of it like you, CarolinaMom), S19, and D21. I have really enjoyed the HS13 and HS16 communities and look forward to another wild ride with you all. I am interested in how few of your kids are taking Common Core math classes as opposed to traditional geometry, algebra, etc. since I thought more states had made the transition. (I envy you all.) DS19 is in Honors Secondary Math III (a Common Core class) this year with the expectation he will take AB Calc next year, BC Calc as a Junior and IB HL Math as a Senior. He is also taking AP Stats, Hon World Civ, Hon English 10 (what IB-track 9th graders take at our school), Honors Biology, German 1/2, TV Broadcasting, PE. He had to read Cry, the Beloved Country over the summer.
Today was the first day of school here. DD’19 is our third and last. Just waiting on the kids to get home and report on the first day of school. I’m sure I will get one word from DS’16 “fine” but I’m hoping for a bit more from DD’19. Next weekend we will drive the college kid back to school.
@EastGrad I also have a DD’13 (college '17) & DS’16.
@EastGrad We are in VA which doesn’t have/never had common core. We have SOLs- Standards of Learning.
DD’19 has
Honors Algebra 2, Hon Bio, Hon World Studies 2, Hon English 9, Spanish 2, PE, Drawing & Painting, and Girls Chorus
@Dragonflygarden, I remember you from our SS Indecision days in the Spring of 2013. Those were good times. I wonder if SOLs are the same as Common Core standards. We used to live in central VA ourselves.
When I picked DS after the home coming parade last night (He is in marching band). He said I guess I’m going to the home coming dance… Note it’s on Saturday and I was kind of surprised since I thought if he wanted to go he would have planned ahead. anyway turns out that he has 5 friends that are girls that are going in a group and they want him to go with them to the dance. At this point I’m unsure if he is stuck in the friend zone with all of them or not…
