Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@MichiganGeorgia, does this mean he must buy 5 corsages?!

@EastGrad - No. But he did tell me that they all showed him pictures of their dresses and ask him what he thoughtā€¦ He said he told them they all looked nice or something along those lines. He learned that from DH

That sounds very fun. Iā€™ll bet at least one of those girls has her eye on him! Do you guys have fancy HOCO proposals? Iā€™ve started to see kids at other schools with FB posts ā€¦ Posters, flower bouquets, decorated soccer goals. When did boys start doing all this cool stuff?

The big proposals are for Junior/Senior prom. Some of the boys do go all out for it. Homecoming is more for fun and while everyone dresses up they arenā€™t in tuxes and long dresses.

DS had fun. He was glad he went and yes it turned out there maybe a girlfriend in future. Although he told me her parents donā€™t allow her to date until she is 16ā€¦

We had the Captain of the football team ask his cheerleader girlfriend on the sidelines with roses and a sign. Since the sign said I love you I assume it was not unexpected that they would go together. It is sweet but I feel like additional pressure.

My D19 is part of the committee so she has to go to homecoming, but no date.

@MichiganGeorgia I knew it! kiddo is planning to go in a large girl group with the other freshman dancers. Iā€™m glad. Now for a dress and all the plans. Sheā€™s been slow to enjoy school and the new social sceneā€¦so this sounds like a good thing

Joining in ā€“ DD is enjoying her first year of high school (so far), and is making lots of friends through her participation in theatre. She is already thinking about taking a course next summer so she has room in her schedule for a theatre tech elective.

Welcome, @OrangeFish! I love it when they find their own niche and thrive. Congrats to your DD.

Same here @OrangeFish. She must be enjoying herself to volunteer for summer school. You gotta love that!

Homecoming is this Saturday and D19 decided last evening to ask a girl. She already has a dress and , fortunately he has a matching dress shirt and pants. One more reason boys are so much easier.

I donā€™t even think we have Homecoming here. Fancy proposals, suits and dresses! Holy cow.

First quarter is almost half over, which means interim reports come out soon, and open house is next week. This will be the first major high school feedback. Havenā€™t had much to go on so far. DS says to expect good news, but thatā€™s what he always says. Oy.

We have something called infinite campus here. So I can go out and see all the kids grades everyday if I wanted to.
They donā€™t even send home report cards any more. Itā€™s all on line.

Thatā€™s so cool. I have access to something like that for three of his classes, but math and science donā€™t do it. And even in the other classes, itā€™s just assignments and tests as theyā€™re graded. According to his mom, the school DSā€™s step-siblings attend has fully updated grades every day by four.

Hopefully, next week Iā€™ll also get some written feedback, not just grades, but I donā€™t know.

Our public high school and all the middle and high schools in the district use a system called ParentVue/StudentVue where you can log on and get instant access to assignments and tests as theyā€™re graded, and see what percent of the grade is allocated to homework vs. quiz vs. final, etc. Last year my D was in a charter school for 8th grade and while I liked a lot of things about the charter, one thing I didnā€™t like was that they didnā€™t have a system like that. Reports were emailed out by each teacher about every 6 weeks, and there was no consistent format to them with some being more informative than others. Only then would I find out about missing homework that D had never turned in. The charter said that that system empowered the kids and made them accountable, which sounds good but wasnā€™t working well in our case. On the plus side the teachers at the charter would include a narrative paragraph specifically about your kid, which was always interesting and appreciated.

Homecoming tonight! DS19ā€™s first dance. Held the ā€œpicture partyā€ at our house at 5 p.m., complete with sparkling cider, appetizers, and lots of parents with cameras. Was reminded that DS13ā€™s first dance seems like it was just a few months ago, and now heā€™s a college junior! Buckle up, friends, this is going to be one fast ride.

My class of 19 kid had zero interest in any Homecoming activities. Too loud and chaotic from her POV. Maybe next year.

We also have infinite campus here for middle and high school. Itā€™s great when teachers use it. My daughter had a middle school gym teacher who didnā€™t really use it correctly for the two years he was her teacher, but I didnā€™t make any complaints because it was gym and not a class I worry much about. He would put in the entire marking period worth of grades a few days before the end of the marking period, instead of doing it daily or even weekly.

High school mid term grades were calculated last week. No huge surprises since we can see grades online daily anyway. The only surprise at all was Spanish 2H because the teacher bumped everyone up a couple of points to make up for the first horrible month of class with subs who couldnā€™t teach even though the kids were still being graded as if they were being taught (regular teacher is out on maternity leave). That was a nice gesture but I think my kid is ruined for Spanish H and will just do regular Spanish 3 next year.

We had curriculum night last week. Best part was hearings at least 3 different teachers comment that our class of 19 kids are incredibly polite, respectful and energetic about learning. One teacher actually said he had to ask them to stop thanking him constantly, lol.

We have a grade portal and I love it. The high school teachers seem to be better at keeping the grades currentā€¦itā€™s very nice not to bug kiddo about her progress. Until thereā€™s a bad grade and then I think we might put too much pressure on herā€¦ oops, did I say that out loud?

Donā€™t post here often , but was hoping maybe someone knew of some resources to help DS19. He is falling further and further behind in Geometry. Does anyone know if any online resources or the best way to find a tutor? Iā€™ve called his teacher and am waiting for his input, but I am open to any suggestions .

@carolinamom2boys Khan Academy is great https://www.khanacademy.org/
