@dfbdfb My D does not do well with online classes either - she is a procrastinator. I am hoping since they are doing the classes in real time and not an at your own pace thing she might do better though.
@elena13 D19 said there was lots of crying as well. She said they started sad, then got mad, then decided to make the best of it and at least have a ton of fun before they go.
FYI, uhaul are offering 30 days of free storage to college kids who have to move out unexpectedly with all this. Iām not sure what links Iām allowed to post but googling brings up a few news stories on it.
@momtogkc yeah right. Spring break a total bust for sure. My concern now has now moved to D21ās SAT being cancelled. I could see all spring SATs being cancelled. Great.
March Madness being cancelled was the last straw for S19. He has declared himself sad. I just hope his roommate can get S19 packed up on Sunday. Heās offered and his mom is great so I hope it will go as planned. Bowdoin will keep kids stuff at their arena for the foreseeable future if you canāt get there to bring it home or to storage. You just need to find someone to pack you up. They even said staff (like the professors!) will pack you up if you give them permission and get your stuff to the arena. They know itās an invasion of privacy but are basically offering to look the other way if thereās something illegal or something they donāt want to see!
Grocery shopping this afternoon was crazy today. Itās finally hit our neighborhood. Paper products, of course, gone but also bread, frozen fruit, baking suppliesā¦
NYU has now extended remote classes through at least April 19. So that changes our plans for D26ās spring break too (which to be fair we were reconsidering anyway). One of our stops was to be at a small inn and in chatting to the owner (trying to figure out if we can reschedule to a later date) they are seriously hurting in this, as I guess many big and small businesses are. I just hope all this shutting schools/working from home/not traveling etc does actually serve to help mitigate the spread of this virus and we can get semi back to normal in not too long.
The problem is that even if you donāt feel the urge to hoard, the fact that you keep seeing empty shelves in the stores eventually makes you think you should! Itās crazy, even with stores restricting per person purchases the sanitizers, rubbing alcohol and paper products are just gone.
Confirmed case of at least kid at Tufts. Heading over in a few minutes to move son out.
We might head north to Maine where the danger is low and the snow is still deep :), let the kid have a little fun on his Spring Break. There might be more toilet paper in Maine too. LOL
He was really looking forward to his CA trip, spring sports season, and some other fun events they have lined up at school. He is taking it well, heās had random acts of crappy stuff happen to him throughout his life so heās teared to be resilient and just roll with the times.
So far, at NEU theyāve let the kids stay in the dorms and study online. Very interesting. So my son is staying there for now, but we are trying to convince him to come home for a week or so. NEU has been excellent with communication ,facts, updates.
We thought there would be online class next week but apparently itās just an extension of spring break so they can figure out what theyāre going to do. So we donāt need to go down and get her books, yet.
Too bad she wonāt have class to occupy her mind next week. There will be some HS friends back in town thoughā¦
@RightCoaster good luck packing up your S. Heading to Maine sounds good. S19 was joking around that he and some friends are going to go back to Brunswick and getting an apartment. Lol. They arenāt allowed on campus but they could be together there and in a state that seems to be less affected. We, obviously I hope, are not allowing him to do this but it was a fun fantasy for an afternoon.
@bjscheel Itās good to have friends around. S19 has been out with his all day every day for the last week but should I even be allowing this? I think I might have to tell him that they need to stop going to restaurants. I donāt know how much we should even be letting the kids hang out together. I know they arenāt washing their hands enough.
Iām getting more and more concerned this is going to go into the fall.
Our S19 is currently in Alabama with his track team. They were invited to an invitational meet there and drove down from Ohio on Wednesday night. It seems they may just sneak this one under the wire before the outdoor season ends almost before it begins. I am pleased that they did this and hope it comes off without a hitch (no confirmed cases in Alabama to date). After that, itās back to campus. As an international student, S19 will be allowed to stay in the dorm for now. I am pretty happy with how Denison has handled things so far, although itās been very tough for the seniors in particular. The local Denison community has also been amazing - this morning, a long list was posted on the parentsā Facebook page, with people offering almost any kind of support you can think of - a place to stay, a meal, a ride, help packing, and on and on. Although itās a huge and unanticipated disruption in what had started out as an idyllic freshman year, I am hoping this will turn out to be a valuable learning experience with the passage of time.
On top of all this mess a boy died at Tulane yesterday. Some of the dorms have balconies, they are kind of like motels where the only way to get to the room is from outside. It was the one thing I hated about the school as soon as we visited, I thought it was anti social, ugly and dangerous. Who wants a bunch of kids who could be roughhousing, drunk or just plain stupid around balconies? Yesterday afternoon a boy fell from a balcony and was rushed to the hospital where he later died, it is so heartbreaking. A few of Dās friends were walking over to see her and saw the paramedics working on him, they are devastated.
I am flying down to help D pack up tomorrow. I know we are not supposed to be traveling but with all of the stress the kids have had I want to help her get this done quickly and easily.
@homerdog Iāve decided not to worry about DD hanging out with friends and going places around here, including restaurants. Sheāll be eating out twice today.
@homerdog if your son needs a place to stay he is welcome to use my house in Maine. Itās about a 75 minute ride from Bowdoin. We are going to be up there for a few days, but after that itās just sitting empty. No virus in that community yet.
D19 boarded her plane home today, and texted us as the doors closed. 55 people on the entire plane, she said the plane smelt very clean! And that everyone had their own wipes anyway.
We cancelled our spring break reservations today too. Airlines are getting hammered.
S19 flew home yesterday, a week earlier than planned. The quarter is over but he still has to do his finals and submit them remotely. Many students are reluctant to leave Caltech. The campus is not closing but the administration is āstrongly encouragingā them to leave.
DH taught his first online class today, seemed to go well.
@momtogkc thatās the excuse I used to my wife, that I need to self distance and go skiing for a few days after picking son up in the āhot spotā of Tufts. LOL, she was mostly not having of it. @homedog, no worries, if your S and friends get in a jam let me know. Itās no biggie.
Son19 is home now, picked up the kid and the dorm smelled like a keg party. Pretty gnarly, good his mom stayed home for this one
Heās a bit bummed out, but said things could be much worse. I met some of his friends and they were all nice and helping each other move out. He said they planned to get together soon and he seemed in pretty good spirits for what they are dealing with.
We are currently doing loads of laundry and fumigating everything.
Hope everything goes well with all of your kids!! Good luck
D19 and I fly home to SC from Reno tomorrow. Hoping for an empty plane! At least he had one last fun hurrah before life shuts down - he managed over 100,000 vertical feet of skiing w my friend in Tahoe. Watching him was scary, told him this is NOT the time to need to go to ER.
