Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@Stuffedquahog Awesome news! You obviously have a very talented DS, considering that he was able to obtain a position given the current economic climate.

We are celebrating our DS16’s college graduation today! A good day all around for our 2016s.

@Stuffedquahog Congratulations to your son. That’s amazing. He was at Bentley?

D19 has two more finals. She is going full steam ahead with internship and summer math class plans. We are about to do something questionable in a couple weeks and shelter in place in a more scenic spot. Not a popular place, but more nature.

@zipstermom Thanks! And a huge congrats to your son too! Our poor 16’s missed out on so many senior moments this spring :frowning:

@peachActuary73 Thanks! Yes my S16 & D19 both go to Bentley.

We also go great news this evening. Our D19 found out she got accepted next fall into an internship class that is 3 credits and has a $2,000 stipend. They had 80 students apply and they offered it to 15 students. Aside from the actual class it also involves 70 hours during the semester at an internship they place you at. We are thrilled for her!!!

@Stuffedquahog - Congrats to both your kids! Great news for your family!

@Stuffedquahog Congrats again. I thought that was the school with the personalized D19 acceptance.

And Rice announces plans for the fall…

Not questionable at all. Just make sure that you keep yourselves safe as you move, and when you stock up the new scenic place. In fact, scenic + not popular is a great combination for sheltering in pace. Fewer people, and nicer view and places to hike to relieve the stress of the social distancing.

Good news for son17, his e commerce supply chain co-op in Boston this summer is still a go. They plan to be open. If not in the office, he will work remotely until it is safe to go to the office. His dorm issue is still in question, but not cancelled yet.
In retrospect, having a 5 year plan for him should work out, as he won’t graduate until 2022, hopefully enough time for the economy to come back and have the virus issues resolved.
Finals week for son19. Still on the grind, he’s looking forward to a bit of a break until his summer class starts

DD took a final last night. And saw that a final had been moved from Friday to today without any notice from the professor. She is off today so can do it but had already taken off work on Friday for that one. She might still take the day off.

Yesterday she was happy with work because she got to do something more “real” than the usual grunt work. Then when she got home I had to tell her that church camp is cancelled. Pretty much the final nail for her as we had held out hope August would be okay and there would be one thing to still look forward to. We did hatch a plan with my sister’s family to still rent cabins there and make our own week of fun so that helps our mood.

S19 took last final yesterday (a grueling 6 hours). Pleased with the semester. Despite the challenges, his profs adapted to online teaching and it all went quite well.

Just heard UofSC will be in-person this fall. There was an extensive message with details about procedures to test all students and faculty, limit class sizes, promote distancing, and provide health care, but there was also an emphasis on personal responsbility. There will be online options for those who do not feel cofortable returning, although S19 fully plans to.

@SammoJ yeah I saw that about USCar. I know it’s the best schools can do right now but who knows what the details will end up being. Masks everywhere? How many classes online from your dorm room? No cafeteria eat in at all? How will they decide who to quarantine?

Socializing, meal time, and class could look radically different.

My D19 will follow whatever guidelines her school sets Even if it is online classes in her suite and packaged meals from the dining hall - she’ll do it! She really misses her friends and her independence. She is a rule follower - so I have no worries about her not following whatever guidelines they set on campus. I have a feeling Bentley will be back on campus in the fall but going with their hybrid plan which is one of their options (can’t really explain, details are still a little fuzzy to me)

D19 is done with finals. Summer break has arrived but with living in a tourist town, her summer job is on hold right now. I will say with all this new found free time her bedroom is spotless.

School year ended shortly after midnight. She worked on stuff all day and got one project in shortly before the deadline at midnight. Then started the final that had to be done by 5pm today because she works all day today. It didn’t take her too long. I asked her if she had any thing more and she thought a moment and said no. So that was that.

And today she’s counting frogs and toads in a county park.

UVT has announced that they will be returning to campus in the fall, making it also possible that Middlebury will follow suit. So D19 is feeling a bit more optimistic about the fall.

@Stuffedquahog Small world - I’m on the masters swim team which works out at Bentley…I live one town over (about 10 minutes away). Started with them in…yikes…2000. Word we are hearing is they are doing everything they can to figure out how to get the kids back on campus. For us old swimming folks, we have been told that we mostly likely won’t be back in the pool until September. :frowning:

Congrats to your son for the offer with the consulting firm. Talk about timing!!!

NYU is planning on returning to in person in NYC in the fall, though obviously they have to have a bunch of contingency plans for various scenarios, including accommodating those who don’t want to be back, potential housing issues, etc. There should be something more definitive by early June. (They seem to be gearing up to use NYU Shanghai (just reopened) for normally NYC-based Chinese students if traveling remains problematic for them.)

I’m just going to remain hopeful that more widespread testing (our county just announced it has tests for anyone who wants one) and an eventual vaccine will allow some level of normality. I think we are going to end up with hybrid education models and in fact, hybrid living for a while.

Thank you @SwimmingDad - the timing was really spectacular!

Not sure if you heard but Bentley is going over to trimesters starting this school year. The conversion is kind of interesting. Since they have already had the students register for fall classes, the fall is a regular semester (16 weeks). Starting in January they will go over to trimesters (14 weeks). So there will be students on campus year-round because what they are implementing are fall/spring/summer trimesters at 14 weeks each with students picking which TWO trimesters they want to attend. Each trimester will still be 5 classes, including summer. For this academic year only, all Bentley students can attend the summer trimester for free tuition. That’s 5 more classes they can add to one academic year, so 15 total classes for the price of 10 is possible next year. The only piece a student would have to pay in the summer is room and board.

I am only mentioning this because next summer may be quite busy on campus and when you go to swim you may wonder why there are so many kids on campus.

@Stuffedquahog I hadn’t heard that. What an interesting change!

Funny Bentley pool story. About three years ago we are finishing up and the Bentley swimmers are arriving (7:30 AM). A kid has a shirt on from the town his is from in Pennsylvania. I look at him and say “Excuse me, this is an odd question…but are your parents so and so?” Ummmm…yeah. “I’m Connor’s dad. We lived on Inglewood. We were friends with the Kielys and your parents. I live in Lexington now.” Seriously…small world.

@SwimmingDad That is a funny story. Small world!

Lexington, eh? I absolutely love Wilson’s - I go over to Wilson’s on almost all trips up to Bentley. It’s such a cool place! I particularly love it in the fall. The building itself is an Instagram pic.

D19 has her schedule for next semester finalized and… she’s managed to get no Friday classes, again!

Still no schedule for S19 or housing either! Bowdoin decision about fall mid to late June and then class registration and housing in July. He’s done with one class. Finished the take home (haha) final today. Has two more finals and a paper and freshman year is done. Last final is on Wed. I feel sad as this was not the way it was supposed to go for any of them. He was supposed to fly home next Friday.

Bowdoin (like other schools) posts updates all of the time on Instagram with professors giving hopeful messages and photos of campus. The dining hall posts recipes. The wellness center has live yoga. The student government runs weekly trivia night virtually. It’s supposed to help but it just makes me sad that he’s missing all of that in person.
