Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Boarding School is another kettle of fish. If she’s excited about going then I doubt she’ll any issues. Congratulations on the scholarship!

Thanks. She is excited. I have never thought about it until she brought the idea to me saying that she is likely to get scholarship too as “we are not an affluent family.”

And Health is done (online/plus 4 weeks of 2x per week 45 min classes in person). First high school class in the bag. I can happily report she has a weighted and unweighted 4.0 as of today.

@VickiSoCal Congratualations! <:-P My DS will also start a online class next week, but it won’t be considered part of his HS course load.

I’m not sure any college on the planet cares about health grade but the school considers it part of her academic GPA :))

My DS should finish Health next week but even though his grade will so on the transcript summer classes and on-line classes don’t count for GPA here.

Hi. So… I know this is a forum meant for the parents of the class of 2020. However, my parents don’t know much about the college admissions process as they didn’t go to college in the U.S… So… Would you all mind if from time to time I ask questions on this forum?

Welcome @loftydreams members of CC are welcome to post in any forum.

Welcome @loftydreams!

Well, summer is half over and I’m trying to maintain my vacation “chi” before the school year starts. D left jr high as the valedictorian and I’m hoping that motivates her as she starts high school. She is bright and so far hasn’t really struggled too much academically. She knows from her two older siblings that high school is a whole different ballgame.

I posted a questions in the forum asking for suggestions on school planners and then I found one when I went shopping today. Time management is so important in high school (and is a great lifeskill). It helped my older S immensely in HS and college.

HS starts here in 20 days. I wish the summer were only half over. DD and I were just discussing this afternoon that we need to get that school supply shopping done! :!!

@Cheeringsection I feel ya, we start here in about 29 days, DS is in band camp this week, so we feel like we are already in school. D16 leaves to go back to college in two weeks and I will miss having her around.

@loftydreams welcome, I know that you will get some great info off of these boards.

Welcome @loftydreams! Well, DD finished her American Sign Language class at the junior college and received an A. It’s a great shot of confidence for her as she launches into her freshman year. She starts camp for her leadership class tomorrow and then has band camp next week. Following that, she will help run registration days with her leadership class, and school starts a few days after that. I guess summer is pretty much over for her. I can’t believe it…it went by so fast!

This is week 3 of school for us. We ended up changing physics to biology. My sr is doing biology and neither like it, so they decided it would be more fun to do labs together rather each suffer through them separately.

We are in to week 3 of cross country, next week they head up to the mountains for running camp, then registration the week after that and then school the week after that. I believe her classes are set:

Pre-Calc H
Bio H
APHUG
Lang Arts 1 H
Japanese 2
Cross Country

Only 6 periods at our school. I believe she will have the same teacher for PreCalc as her sister did and we love her, and then she’s got a 50/50 shot of same teacher for all the other classes, except Japanese and cross country, as sister did not do those.

Health complete!
Now to sign ds20 up for driver’s Ed!

DD found out today that Freshman Band and Honors Biology will both be offered during first period, and there is only one section of each class. DD now has to decide between the two classes. If she chooses Freshman Band and doesn’t take Honors Bio, she will be enrolled in Physical Science during zero period. The Physical Science class is a non-honors science class and is the only other science class open to freshmen. DD has excelled in band and would be sad to drop it in order to take Honors Bio. She also won’t be allowed to take her Jazz Band class if she isn’t concurrently enrolled in Freshman Band. I should also note that band is a huge part of her school and social life. On the other hand, she is a very driven student and thinks that she may wish to eventually apply to top-tier colleges as a STEM major. I am concerned that having her take the less rigorous Physical Science class instead of Honors Bio could slightly lessen her chances for admittance into a STEM major at top-tier colleges. Also, taking Physical Science in 9th grade will force her to take Honors Bio in 10th grade and affect the sequence of science classes that she takes in her junior and senior year. I’m not sure what DD should do about this. Sorry for the long (and possibly confusing) post, but any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

@khmamma can she jump to Honors Chemistry and take Bio next year? She can’t be the only one with this problem!

@Khmamma Yes, my ds20 is taking pre-AP Chem this year there is a concurrent enrollment or completion of Algebra II requirement though.

Thanks @LKnomad and @3scoutsmom I will check into having her jump into Honors Chem next year. She has only completed Geometry up to this point, though. She is taking Honors Algebra II this year. And yes, there are two other students that are supposed to be enrolled in Honors Bio and Freshman Band. I don’t know if the school has actually informed those two students and their families yet…I only found out about the scheduling conflict because I called the counseling office about an unrelated issue. I hope the school lets the other families know by today or tomorrow, since band camp starts on Monday.

On a side note, I just realized that my user name is almost identical to another CC user, with me being “khmama” and the other being “khmamma.” Sorry for any confusion!

@khmama,
My daughter took something like Hon Chem last year and it didn’t require Algebra II skills, nor Geometry. If she was good at Algebra I, it should be ok.
On the other hand, it was a very very challenging course for her with countless hours of hard working, yet she only barely got A probably thanks to huge grade curving.
