Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@bgbg4us D took the December ACT and thought she did very poorly. Not anxious about the score only because we got back the Dec SAT, which was fine. I definitely am interested in the score, though.

And, yes, I have logins for both CB and ACT, so I will check the score and let her know…unless she beats me to it.

Very happy with SAT2 Math2 results of 790. This is her first standardized test we will be sending for admissions purposes, up to now she had only taken PSAT and APs. So a very good start.

She’s a high test, mediocre grades kid so those scores need to be high as possible!

UCSC is also on OUR list! Wow. Possible CS major, or math, or physics, or environmental science, or whatever strikes her fancy this month.

Anybody else counting the days until break? S2 is just exhausted. On top of all the papers, tests, etc., he has a multi-hour performance today and another one Thursday night. T-5. . . .

At least it’s only the AP classes that will generate actual homework over break.

DD is counting the hours to break too. I’m not sure how much homework she will have but I think she is going to try to do a little more ACT prep. She will take it the ACT in February and then again in April because it is mandated by the state. Hopefully she will be all done with testing then. She is within a point of two of the score she wants so hopefully it will be doable.

Dd does full time dual enrollment and had no finals this semester. She has a full five weeks of break! I am so happy for her. She’ll still be working but no classes or homework.

My Dd has also been super exhausted. To the point that we had bloodwork done last week to make sure there aren’t any health issues contributing to it. Hoping to get test results tomorrow or Tuesday. Our semester doesn’t end until the end of January so no final concerns here, thank goodness. For her it is more the issue of juggling multiple sports, multiple bands and the heavy course load she has and probably not fueling her body well enough for all of this. Definitely looking forward to the two week break and hoping she can get a lot of rest and bounce back to her normal self. Having her napping often and not able to finish sports practices is becoming a bit concerning to say the least.

@lkim10 That is concerning! Please update about her results or pm me. Someone I know just found out her dd is very anemic after her issues were brushed off by her doctor for years.

Thanks @ebh87. Anemia is what we are wondering about for sure. She has a teammate who was diagnosed this fall with very similar symptoms.

Just a quick plug for anyone who has a D20 considering applying to universities in the UK, my older daughter is a second-year at St Andrews and I’m a very active participant over on the UK forum if you have questions. My D20 is looking at Cambridge and Durham.

Thanks @VickiSoCal ! I can help with Canadian universities. My D18 is at McGill, and we visited several other schools across Canada.

@ lkim10 - hope your d is OK. we had mono with 2 of our kids - that was tough but there was an end to it. did they check for that?

ok- asked my S20 about checking for ACT scores. he wants me to check. The rest of the family heard and now there’s a pool with $12 on what the score will be!

@lkim10 That schedule sounds exhausting! What two sports is your D in? My D is doing gymnastics currently, but missed 2 days with that stomach virus going around, and now feels just crushed with homework…having been at an away meet all day Saturday. Hope your D rests up soon…

@lkim10- I hope you’re able to get some answers from the doctor and your daughter is feeling better soon.

Seconding that, @lkim10!

Thanks guys. They are also checking on mono along with a number of other possibilities. They took 7 vials of blood to do a full panel on things. She does year round club soccer and then is on the school cross country and track teams. Right now only soccer is happening so that is good. Then she does jazz band (zero hour), concert band, pep band and is in the combo jazz band. She has always been able to juggle it fine and enjoys all the activities, though I think it is too much, but they all fit different niches/talents for her. But it may be that she has finally just hit her limit and we may need to reevaluate the schedule. I am kind of hoping for mono or anemia just because there will be an answer and we can work on getting her better and give her a forced rest with dr. orders. If it all comes up clear then it will be more of a mystery on how to deal with it. Thanks for your kind thoughts!

Wow… that is a lot!

My d20 has never taken the SAT test and plans to just submit ACT test scores to her colleges. If you take ACT tests do you still need to submit SAT subject tests to schools that recommend or accept them?

@janiemiranda they should be clear on that.

Stem subjects tend to be the ones that want subject test.

@janiemiranda we heard that if it is recommended and you score over 700, you should send them. I’m not sure if that thought has changed in the past couple of years. I suppose it depends on what school you are talking about.

Some schools recommend subject tests for certain majors. If you score well in tests related to your major, I think it would only help your application.

Thank you @lkg4answers and @VickiSoCal. Thank you all so much. This is my first and only child so I am so clueless about this stuff.
