So today is DS20’s first day of school, not just the first day high school but the first day of school outside of homeschool. I’ve got my fingers crossed that all went well, I can’t wait for him to get home to tell me all about it!
Last Sunday at church they had a “blessing of the backpacks” for students, this was a new one for me and although DS isn’t very religious, he willingly agreed to participate, I figure he thought he’ll take any help he can get!
Keeping our fingers crossed that D’s decision to change her foreign language won’t mess up her schedule. I left a voicemail message for her counselor two days ago and no reply so I will call to make an appointment. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.
D20 decided to drop her American Sign Language 2 class at our local junior college for this semester. She’s joined her high school’s golf team and the golf tournaments will conflict with the time of the ASL 2 class. She will just have to take it next semester. I’m actually glad she’s dropped the class for now and is joining the golf team. I think it will be a nice start to her high school experience.
@whataboutcollege and @lilmom - I hope your high school’s counselors are able to help with the scheduling problems.
I can’t believe it, but in the very short time my daughter has been at her high school, two successive counselors that handle her “name group” have quit - no notice at all - they just quit on the spot. The head counselor is unsure when a new counselor will be hired. Bummer.
DD made a change to her classes as well. She moved from Honors to regular for History. She decided that her focus needed to be on Algebra II, Honors bio and Latin II. She is currently interested in pursuing something in the medical field as a career. She also has orchestra and English honors. Her fall sport is well underway and she has also committed to a club team once the school season is over that will involve out of town tournaments. She has also joined 2 clubs. I think she is off to a great start!
@Cheeringsection, I love your screen name! Your D’s schedule will be manageable partly because she made the decisions. Kudos to her.
@khmama, my older D was also on the school golf team and eventually went on to be a college golfer. Its a great sport that’s open doors for her past undergrad years. Good luck to your D!
re: counselors. My D’s counselor retired and a brand new one replaced him. I was a little frustrated that we didn’t hear back from her. Don’t get me wrong. I’m also an educator and know the workload of the counselors in our district but this is my D…lol. I happened to meet another counselor at parent night who offered to help make the change. We are grateful that it will be done before school starts.
@lilmom, I’m interested to know more about your older DD playing for college golf as my DD’18 has been in HS Golf team since freshman, although she enjoys the sport and her team but she doesn’t want to commit to play for college. My DD’20 is entirely opposite, she loves basketball and wanted to play in college, I am trying to learn more about college recruiting process or find someone who can help us, as we heard most players were scouted or recruited by sophomore year.
@jjkmom, I learned that college recruiting varies by sport. Also, scouting goes on until colleges fill all of their spots.
You may want to start by posting in the athletic recruit section of CC. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/ There was a lot of good info when my D was going through recruiting. Also, talk to the high school basketball coach. Colleges often contact them for prospects. Good luck!
Thank you for the wish of good luck @lilmom! My DD did ballet and jazz dance for years, and has only recently taken up golf, so she is at a beginner level. In all likelihood, she will not be recruited for golf. She absolutely loves golf, though, and says that her coach and teammates are great. I’m pleased that she will get to experience being on a sports team at her high school.
@khmama, my golfer D also did years of ballet. I’m sure it’s helped our girls with their golf swing. My two older kids, now college grads, were both involved in high school and the experience served them well.
Speaking of being involved in high school, I’m just curious to hear how many of you plan to be involved in parent teacher organizations, boosters, etc.?
I’m helping a lot with driving for cross country already, we take them out to a different trail each weekend.
This spring I imagine with 2 swimmers this I’ll be helping at meets and such. But tbh my kids don’t want me on campus much with PTA and stuff. They think the moms who keep doing that through high school are weird/over involved.
@lilmom - yes, the dance helped DD so much with strength and balance, which will really help her on the golf course.
I am serving on the PTSA Board at the high school. The current PTSA president really needed volunteers & asked me to serve on the board — we worked together in the PTA at our kids’ former elementary school. Our high school’s boosters group gets much more parental involvement and financial contributions. Both organizations are great and serve the school/students well. The PTSA is just much smaller and has a much smaller budget, so I felt like giving the “underdog” my help.
@VickiSoCal My 14 year old DD is already thinks I’m “weird” most of the time. It seems that lately I can’t breathe without embarrassing her. So I guess it won’t matter if I’m still embarrassing her by being involved in the PTSA. I actually wasn’t planning on being this involved in the school. I was looking forward to not being “that” PTA mom anymore. I guess I’ll have to wait until 2020 for that to happen, lol.
DH and I are both involved as volunteers at the HS just as we have been throughout her schooling. DD thinks nothing of it since lots of parents are involved in our district.
