Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Congratulations @Dancingmom518 and @ShrimpBurrito.

@Dancingmom518, did you hear about this Stanford program: https://spice.fsi.stanford.edu/fellowships/reischauer_scholars_program - It says seniors can apply, too (applications are open in the fall). Best of luck with the interview!

Stayed up late to get my daughterā€™s ACT score and it didnā€™t come in last night. The people she knows who tested in the same room also didnā€™t get their scores.

ACT said it can take up to 8 weeks to get scores. Anyone know if they really do take that long? D20 is frustrated because everyone who took the test in a different room has their scores now.

@brentwoodmom - did she do the writing portion? I think those take longer.

@mountainmomof3 No, just multiple choice.

My D got her ACT scores within 3 or 4 weeks and the writing scores a few weeks later.

@brentwoodmom - that is very frustrating but I know it happens sometimes. I am a very impatient person so I would not be handling that well.

My daughter took the ACT back in October and the scores werenā€™t out in the first wave, but came out 12ish hours later I want to say.

Weā€™ve been fortunate that our scores have shown up on time for both kids, with and without writing. Donā€™t you despise knowing you should know??

@Darcy123 Thanks! I had read they only came out on Wed and Fri, glad to know that might not be true.

Iā€™m not very patient either. Never had one of my kidsā€™ scores not show up on time, so didnā€™t realize this happened. And D is super frustrated that almost all her friends have their scores.

My daughter just corrected me @brentwoodmom that it was her SAT scores that came out about 12 hours later. Iā€™d stayed up until 2 am or whatever the official time was supposed to be and they came out around 10 the next day. Sorry for the misinformation. Neither of us waited up for the ACT scores, but they were there when we checked them first thing in the morning. Too many tests last fall!

@typiCAmom Thank you for the tip about the Stanford program. We will look into it! And thank you to others for the good wishes.

@cakeisgreat Funny, my D20 and I just started looking into Lehigh as well and we are planning to head over there tomorrow to check it out (we live about three hours away, hope the weather is OK). I read Greek life is about 40 percent of students (which means 60 percent is not). My daughter is pretty introverted so she does not want heavy Greek life either. I will let you know what I learn after our visit.

Iā€™d love to hear impressions of Lehigh too. We are visiting in April but were initially discouraged by a current parent due to the frat scene. Hoping for the best since itā€™s nice and close!

@dancingmom518 Yes! Please post or PM to let me/us know what you think. We are about 3 hours away as well. Itā€™s always tough to gauge the reviews where I found the post that Greek life is everything because it is a website that tends to be the anonymous rant site for unhappy students. Glad they post though because I believe their experience is valid. Itā€™s just how many students have the same experience, and will my D20 have that experience? Sheā€™s pretty timid. But if you ended up liking, Iā€™ll definitely put it on the tour list! Can you post what you think of the surrounding neighborhood as well (whatever part of it that you see anyway.).   Thank you SO much!

When we were looking at Quinnipiac U for my D14 kid, we read very negative reviews on that particular site, but had such positive experiences when we toured, student for a day, and from talking with any person in our area that went there. I went overboard there by touring 3 times (one open house) etc because I was so worried the school would live up to the reputation posted (and because she was my 1st kid). We loved it! Ended up taking a chance and it was the best fit for D - graduated last May with a couple of great job offers in the nursing field doing exactly what she wanted. Great friends, great growing up experience, great help from staff, great area, etc.

PS - Muhlenberg, Dickinson, and Clark University caught my eye but on the fence about visiting them because of reading they are more athletic/sporty, unsafe neighborhoods(? maybe). Thinking about Davidson College in NC but might be too small at 1800 students. Ideally want between 3000-15000 (not the deal breaker tho)

My kid trips over her own feet and has gotten concussions in gym class, so athletics for her will probably consist of working out at the gym. The only thing she is allowed to do in gym class now is weight room and yoga ha ha!!!

To give back, here are the colleges we visited already:

U Richmond - I loved it! Everything about it. And waived app fee if you tour. But for some reason kids (S19 and D20) dont want to apply. That bummed me out but definitely check it outā€¦beautiful campus, great academics/offerings.

College of Charleston - Loved everything about it. S19 applied and definitely considering. Great merit. It will come down to whether S19 wants a charming city environment or not. D20 might apply but the city thing is a little stressful for her.

Elon U - S19 loved, applied, accepted, was top contender. But most expensive and took off list. D20 did not like it but I think itā€™s because when she toured, the tour guide paid total attention to S19 because technically he was applying.

Rowan U - Did not like - was great school, great for engineering and nice business school. Just didnt like the campus. Definitely would recommend for anyone to check it out though.

Rutgers - My D16 goes there for Food Science and Japanese and I just graduated from Business School (non-traditional student!) and am in masters program now. Was great for meā€¦other kids wont apply. Too big/spread out.

Virginia Tech - loved everything. Beautiful, great academics. Top contender for both S19 and D20 (even though its a large school and ā€œsportyā€). They both felt that it seemed large but contained, and the stores/necessities were convenient. Plus the food is apparently amazing.

Marist College - loved when toured with S19. Taking D20 to tour because seems to have a great Psychology program. And campus seems serene and closed, but you can walk under a bridge across the street to necessities/restaurants, etc.

Okay - you guys are probably bored and stopped reading a long time ago, but with the four kiddos, I can list more colleges if anyone ever wants!

@cakeisgreat I feel the same way about Quinnipiac. We actually live instate (and I lived in Hamden for several years in my 20s) but I had never been there. Heard lots of negatives about it but visited with my son and really liked it. Itā€™s in his top choices now (junior so not applying yet) Husband didnā€™t go with us but has a negative view based on what heā€™s heard, so maybe your post will help convince him otherwise

Son also looking at Rowan (civil engineering) May I ask specifically what you didnā€™t like about the campus?

@cakeisgreat your post isnā€™t boring at all! I love hearing about all the different colleges, especially since we wonā€™t be able to tour very many colleges before D20 applies.

@cakeisgreat My S19 loved VT too. It wasnā€™t even on our radar until I ran into a friend one day while shopping and she told me we should visit.
It went from not even on our radar to top of the list after a one day visit. We loved everything about it.

@taverngirl Cool! If you or your hubby ever have any questions about QU LMK. D14 was an admissions tour guide for several years so she knows all the extras. Definitely a top contender on S19ā€™s list because they have a 3+1 biochemistry program where you graduate in 4 years with your mastersā€¦and the price is frozen. And you get special housing.

Re: Rowan - Collectively we liked aspects of Rowan (thereā€™s a town street that has a hotel and lots of stores/stuff which looked cool), business school, engineering options, but we felt like the school was too confusing and spread out (not sure if thatā€™s actually the caseā€¦just felt that way to us). The admissions person only talked about it being an affordable school (a perk, but I want to know other stuff too). Got lost just trying to get to the admissions office. Also, the tour guide spent a huge amount of time on the engineering school and business, and there was only 1 engineering student in our group and no business students. And the buildings seemed tired (but the business school looked cool). All that being said, I still think itā€™s a great school and the stuff we didnt like was probably more ā€œfitā€ related. I think a lot of people really do well at the school and get where they need to goā€“especially engineers

@hgtvaddict (love the user name) Thanks for the vote of support! Iā€™ll post more soonā€¦we visited so many lol.

Interesting to hear about Quinnipiac. It was on my D20ā€™s list (well, my list of schools for D20 to apply to) for a long time. Sounds like a it has reason to be on there. She is also thinking of Nursing, so I hear a lot of good things about it, and that some clinicals are at Yale Med. (May have that wrongā€¦I donā€™t know the area at all since we are from the midwest). I may have to put it back on the listā€¦but thinking it may not have the sports atmosphere my D is looking forā€¦
