Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

My DD is taking the SAT right now too! This is her second time so I’m hoping she sees the improvement she wants. Ready for her to be finished with this! Good luck to all of them.

Good luck to all SAT test takers today! Hoping this is their last test.

Wow, that’s a lot of SAT takers! Good luck to all.

Yes, mine is taking the SAT today, too! When will we find out the scores?

Friday Mar 22 for multiple choice and the week after for essays.

S20 took the SATs yesterday, too! He took it with the essay and then got in the car and was wishing he had looked at example essays or knew what the SAT would look for. He says he wrote it like they have been taught for the AP exam, but is second guessing that choice.

Oh well. He is taking the ACT next month then another shot at the SAT in June and then we are hoping he will be done testing.

Another ACT test taker here. D20 said it was easier than the ACT and she finished it. Crossing fingers for a great score! March 22 can’t get here fast enough! She did say she wants to take the SAT one more time at the end of the summer.

We have one more week until spring break. The pear trees are blooming, the daffodils are out, and my cherry tree is about to burst. The oaks seem behind, which is fine with me since they make me sneeze. Can’t wait for the dogwoods and azaleas.

D was signed up for the June SAT then found out her school offered it for free in March. So, she took it at school and we’ll see if she’ll need to take the June test. She will also take the ACT in June. Then I hope she’s done. I can’t believe how quickly this year has been going by.

I don’t recall if any students on this thread are in the IB program. D is in it and I am having a hard time finding support/advice about it. Even here on CC.

@lilmom my D17 did the full IB diploma.

@VickiSoCal, if you don’t mind, I’m going to PM you!

My D20 is in the full IB diploma program.

@lilmom DS20 is in the IB diploma program as well. He loves it, sans the paperwork he has to do for the CAS. Lol

Is National Honor Society something colleges like to see? Applications were due today and my kid possibly messed up by not applying. He already has done tutoring in the summers (plus is a T.A.) but has no other other volunteer experience.

@Octagon I wouldn’t worry about it. There are plenty of other ways to get volunteer experience. My D20 has well over 300 hours and has done most of it outside school.

You could look at things your son likes to do and then find an organization in that field and volunteer. For my D it is art and she has done a lot of volunteering over the summer and working at a local museum.

@Dancingmom518 Thanks. I figure that it is better to volunteer for things one is truly passionate about anyways. He got back from school and said, “Well every smart kid turned in an application.”

@Octagon, at D’s school there is no NHS. There are a couple of community service clubs - CSF and a Key Club, but D found her own volunteer opportunities on issue that interest her (immigration), and wasn’t sure organized volunteering just to get the hours was her thing. I disn’t Press her. However, I looked over school website and found out school gives awards for certain number of volunteer hours. So I suggested D download their forms for tracking hours and have her supervisors sign off on the hours. I think the highest award is for 200 hours. D did a lot more, she forgot to submit these sheets half the time, but I think those that she did are still over 200. Of course, she can still just write about those engagements in the common app activities section, but an award would simply be a quick validation of the hours she put in. Maybe your school has something similar?

On another note, reading through rejection posts of all the wonderful TASP applicants, 1500 candidates for 60 spots is just brutal :frowning:

Just as you are following the TASP thread, I keep following http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/2100728-chance-me-for-top-cs-schools-p1.html. I wonder how he did all that he did with limited financial means.

Volunteer time has been a bit of a concern for my daughter. With doing 2 school sports, 1 club sport, multiple bands and a small paid job it is really hard to fit in a volunteer activity. All the ones she is interested in (animal) require a consistent schedule that she hasn’t been able to commit to with the rest of her schedule. She is going to be dropping the club sport after this season so plans to focus on volunteering at the animal shelter starting this summer and then continue during the school year.

First SAT test done for S20 and D20!! D20 taking ACT on April 13 as she scored better on ACT diagnostic. Can’t wait to see how they scored on the SAT. Based on D20’s SAT score we may just focus on ACT. S20 sticking with SAT. They are twins but polar opposites in everything right down to which test they do better at!!

Volunteer hours are hard to come by for a busy teen. I was just looking on our church website for something that will fit in around school, swimming and scouts. Our HS requires 25 a year and now he is in NHS which requires more. I want him to do something he cares about (so he can discuss it and possibly write about it, if needed) @lkim10 I understand the interest in working with animals, that is my son’s preference too but it is hard to commit.
