Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@bigmacbeth My D20 already has made a decision (state flagship) and found her a roommate. By this time next year, the girls will probably be buying out HomeGoods.

No suggestions but I bookmarked the thread for future use. Thank you for asking the question.

@tutumom2001 and @bigmacbeth so glad Iā€™m not the only one with a kid thatā€™s already made up their mind! DS20 will go to UTD where his older brother is. No way will they room together but they will share a car. DS20 will likely go with random roommates. Weā€™ll seeā€¦

@3scoutsmom @tutumom2001 You both have my D beat. She has not figured out the actual school, but I am betting that will happen by Thanksgiving. @tutumom2001 How did your D find a roommate already? Thatā€™s SUPER impressive!

OK - so Iā€™m usually posting on issues relating to D20, but this post is for my S20 who has great stats. He is a soccer nutā€¦admittedly, he is very good but due to lack of discipline in grades 9-10 we are pretty sure he wonā€™t be playing for a D1 school (even though he has not given up hope of that just yet). Iā€™ve had to gently bring him down out of the clouds to agree that it would be OK to play soccer at a D2 or even D3 school and to research those options as backups. Of course, that also means a much lesser known school and likely a school that does not at all compare to a D1 school in its offerings for his selected major - Computer Science/Cybersecurity.

One such school that has actively reached out to him is Stevenson University. Iā€™d never even heard of it. Upon researching it is a very small school on the outskirts of Baltimore, MD. While they do offer a BS in Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, I feel it might be sub-par compared to other programs at schools in our home state such as George Mason, Va. Techā€¦even Radford University. Cost of tuition at Stevenson is also out of our budget, but due to his stats he would likely quality for merit aid.

The issue is he is quite adamant about wanting to play college soccer (and not as a club sport), regardless of where he goes. So - if you have dealt with this please lend me your thoughts and advice.

Also, if any one has any insight into Stevenson University please share. Thanks!

@bigmacbeth Well, the roommate thing is tentative in my mind, but they seem to have decided. They have known each other since they were literally babies and have lived with each other at camps, weekends, mission trips, and more and always gravitate to each other when roommates are needed. Honestly, they arenā€™t best friends but they do get along well. They do have a pretty good idea about each otherā€™s likes, dislikes, and habits, and tend to share similar worldviews. At least they know what theyā€™ll likely be getting into (my daughter is a huge slob), although they may not realize that there is difference between four weeks and nine months.

@scoutmom2002
I donā€™t have knowledge about soccer but would assume that there is a soccer site specifically for hs kids? And I somehow think soccer team (at least for girls) recruits a lot earlier (one of DSā€™ classmates verbally committed last year).

DS20 is a competitive swimmer and we use collegeswimming site extensively, it has all his times/rankings (state-wise and nationally), and we have the varsity account where we could search for colleges that have menā€™s swimming and he is interested in applying. And we could see what the college teamā€™s rooster looks like, the times needed to be competitive, just very handy. If your S20 wants to play in D1 (and maybe D2 also?), he needs to have a NCAA clearing house number, so that transcripts and tests scores will be sent (from school to NCAA to colleges). As we are in the midst of this, and we are mainly looking at D3 schools, we are learning as we go.
DS20 wants to swim for college too, but academics come first so he is only looking at schools that he is interested in going in the first place, then if they have swimming program, it will be a bonus.

I think it is great if kids could do varsity sports in college, as it is an instant social group that they will belong to.

@makemesmart - yes, he has an NCAA # and we know all the basics of being recruited. Heā€™s attending College ID Camps and talking to coaches. Plays on Varsity HS team and Travel League. I just know, realistically, that he most likely missed the boat on D1 recruiting. I am just having a difficult time convincing him that itā€™s more important to pick a good school rather than a school thatā€™s willing to let him play soccer.

@scoutmom2002 at the risk of sounding like a broken record, please check out UT Dallas in RIchardson, Texas. If he can get even their lowest level scholarship, he will get instate tuition which is very reasonable. DS18 is one of those crazy high stats, well rounded kids (near perfect GPA and SAT, national awards for art and Model UN and load of community service in addition to his CS experience) He picked UTD over much higher ranked schools, some like UT Austin he would be an auto admit but pick UTD because they offered so much more on in their undergrad program (more research opportunities, smaller upper level CS classes, more individual support, less competition for internshipsā€¦).

Please note most rankings are based on grad level class- not under grad.Heā€™s almost through his first year and says heā€™s 100% sure he made the best choice (his GF is second year CS at Stanford and most of his high school friends are at UT Austin so thatā€™s his basis for comparison.

3scoutsmom, is that true for UT Dallas? If you get a scholarship you can get in state tuition? That is an amazing benefit!

Not sure where to post this. D20 just qualified for DECA Nationals. Should she go? Is it worth it? Or is it enough to just say she was invited?

@3scoutsmom D17 looked at UT Dallas for a hot second, but their mascot gave her nightmaresā€¦she had to take it off the list. =)) 8-X

I have to agree with her, Temoc is one frightening creature! My boys prefer, enarc, the ā€œunofficialā€ mascot!

Re: Kenyon and the AP scoring.

My frustration was at not finding the AP- to-credit scoring information, though I went to the page to which one is directed and looked at all the options there.

I figure Iā€™ll ask when Iā€™m there and just leave the credit unit hour system to son and his advisor if son matriculates there. I figured if it has been working for them all this time, it woare.

We really loved Kenyon years ago and this is a different sort of looking weā€™re doing now, now that we know to do so.

Sounds like your is having/had a great experience. Truthfully, I have heard few rumblings about Kenyon since weā€™ve had kids heading out to college.

Thanks.

@scoutmom2002
I understand. I read somewhere on the CC about the ā€œbroken leg testā€ which I think is very telling: student athletes should choose school based on if they broke their leg and could not participate in the sport they were in, would they still want to go to that school?
Good luck. It will be an interesting year for all of us, to say the least.

@chb088
I am not familiar with DECA as DSā€™ school obviously does not have this competition. Congratulations for the qualification!
I only know for DSā€™ all-state orchestra, they specifically stated that if you were selected based on audition result but chose not to attend the all-state rehearsal and performance, you could not list it as your achievement, which I think is a bit harsh, even though I totally understand why they state it this way.

Thank you @makemesmart . I think she is still leaning towards not going. While this is a big honor, she has a lot of other stuff on her resume. Even if she doesnā€™t list being invited, she can state that she won her category at States, which by itself would indicate she was invited. Honestly I feel like sometimes itā€™s just too much. These kids need a break at some point.

@Waiting2exhale I found this on the Kenyon site: https://documents.kenyon.edu/courses/2009_2010/specialprogs.pdf

You can search via Google by entering: [site:schoolname.edu ā€œsearch_termā€] to find what youā€™re looking for. It looks in all docs. This found a PDF on Kenyonā€™s site. Enter the part between the brackets.

Here is the excerpt:
Advanced Placement Credit
Up to 3 units of Kenyon credit may be awarded to students who have received scores of 4 or higher on CEEB Advanced Placement (AP) tests. See the Web site of the registrarā€™s office for recommendations regarding credit and placement.

AP credit counts toward the 16 units required for the degree. However, no diversification requirement (i.e., five departments, four divisions) may be satisfied with AP credit.

AP credit may serve as a prerequisite for specific courses in the department, toward requirements for the major, and as advanced placement, depending on each departmentā€™s decision. Students who enroll in courses for which the AP placement is equivalent will have the AP credit removed from their record by the registrar.

Advanced placement, as opposed to credit, is deter-mined by each department. AP credit may not be substituted for a semester of residence at the College. It may, however, be included in a proposal for early graduation.

@scoutmom2002 - no real thoughts about soccer and playing; but i do know its a competitive group for boys. Good luck! have you looked at NAIA colleges at all? would love to hear how that turns out here on this thread.

@ those talking about schools next year: pretty sure my S20 will be at our state flagship too; although he feels slightly deflated as a few friends are talking out of state publics. Heā€™s hoping heā€™ll get a good ACT in april; and thinking thatā€™ll get him scholarships to OOS publics. It will, perhaps, but nothing like in-state. That wonā€™t be a fun conversation. Glad your kids have their plans set!

@chb088 - my older daughter put a few things on her resume that she was invited to, but couldnā€™t attend. She just simply said "invited to *** honor band, *** art event, etc. etc. Her friend got into stanford; and did the same thing; we saw her resume. Dā€™s in a similar spot again in college; earned a nice scholarship to study abroad this summer, but the program fell through. sheā€™ll probably list it.

Just really hoping S20 does well on that ACT test. Weā€™ve been hounding on him. Heā€™s tired of it. We are too. Anyone else feel that way? Wish i had one-and-dones here!

D20 just discovered the UConn precollege summer program and is planning to apply to attend the pre-vet one. It seems like a perfect fit for her as most of the veterinary lessons take place at the Mystic Aquarium. Although she wants to be a vet, she doesnā€™t want to be a typical dog/cat office vet but instead is interested in zoo or wildlife rescue type work or possibly with exotic pets so this seems like a great way for her to see what this job would entail. Does anyone know anything about the UConn summer program? We are from the Pacific NW so not in our area to have heard anything about it.
