^^^ And this is why they send out the emails.
Hello 2020 parents. D 2021 took it also and it says Pending also âshould get scores within a weekâ. D took it w/o essay.
@BingeWatcher Yikes âshould get scores within a weekâ? My D has been anxiously waiting for this day to get her SAT scores - another week would be torture for her.
Little update from UofSC. S and I spoke with the Honors College rep after the info session today. She assured us that they look at each application in context, and that admissions does the same when determining merit money. That certainly makes me feel better, but I will still talk with the HS counselor to make sure we maximize Sâs opportunities at UofSC. I sense that this is the one, especially if heâs accepted into the HC.
For the record, there is a fantastic, buzzy atmosphere here in Columbia today. Beto OâRourke held a campaign rally on campus (S and I almost got run over by his entourage walking out of the HC info session!), and the NCAA basketball tournament is in full swing at UofSCâs arena. S and I stumbled into tickets for tonightâs session. Will be fun!
@lkg4answers: Sure, on why they send out the emails. Agree.
Funny thing with that one school. My husbandâs family has sent a terrific number of kids through there for two generations now. It would drive his brother absolutely bonkers if our kid showed up while his kid was there (his kid enters this coming fall).
That alone tickles the heck out of me.
As a data point at 4:30 am Pacific essay and m/c scores were both up.
Yes I couldnât sleep!
D20âs SAT results are in. 1410. Since the Univ of Alabama cutoff for the Presidential Scholarship is 1420, sheâll be retaking. Iâm very proud of her. Standardized tests are not her âthing.â
SAT scores were posted at 7:30 when I first checked. D20 is out of town but she went up 120 points!! I texted her and she is thrilled! Hope everyone is happy with their scores.
@hgtvaddict Sending 10+ point vibes your way.
@Musicmom2015 Congrats to your D.
(posted this in another thread but asking here as well)
Anyone know or have experience with SAT curves on school-day tests conducted in a few states? does this non-traditional test day have any effect on the curves at all?
S is taking the test on a state-mandated and free SAT in early April - his school opted for a day when no one else, even within the state are taking the test. Wondering how it will impact - if at all - the sat curves. any thoughts?
tia.
D20 got SAT scores, 1470 overall, 760 M/710 R. Trying to decide if she should retake. She wants to be done, but is considering engineering, which we know is a very competitive major everywhere.
Thank you @bigmacbeth!
@momzilla2D Congratulations on a great score! What type of schools is she looking at? Would the 1470 put her at their 75% mark?
@lkg4answers Thanks! Good questions. At this point, D20 is completely undecided. We took her along to many college visits over the last year, on D19âs college search. So she has seen a wide variety of schools, but still says she has no preference on size, urban vs. rural, public vs. private, etc. Through the college visits, D19 developed a clear preference for large public universities, but D20 isnât there yet.
@momzilla2D with large public universities, it is easy to look at their overall admissions stats and feel pretty confident with a 1470. But, if you can delve into admission stats of the type of engineering she wants to do, you will most likely find very different stats.
Congrats to all of your kids who took the SAT - no matter the score, quite a hurdle to jump through! My S is finalizing course selection for next year: AP Lit, multivariable calculus, AP comp science, AP American gov, AP French and AP bio.
@hs2020dad- thatâs a good question. Canât help you; but if you find out anything share it here. curious on how that works; is it an SAT made just for that school? how does that work when itâs not a national test? How do curves work?
my kiddo is taking a state mandated ACT test. He took the alternate date of the PSAT which had a sharp curve. i donât think anyone in his school will make NM.
@Octagon Wow that sounds like a tough class load for senior year. Is this common at your HS?
This leads me to a question about Senior year. Are APs as helpful after Junior year? The GPAs that go to colleges will be based on Junior year and earlier for most apps. Many may not even take the exam which is well after decisions anyway. My D was asking me today about choosing between classes next year that he really likes (science classes) and an AP that heâs only mildly interested in. Heâd end up w 6APs, 2DEs, 2 college classes, and 10+ honors classes. I encouraged him to follow his interests even if that would mean heâd miss the chance of a higher weighted gpa (and possibly some college credit). Some of his peers are taking 5 APs this year with no room for much else. Is taking all or most APs at your high school like a golden ticket to college acceptances and/or good merit scholarships?
@SoccaMomma Yes taking many AP classes is common at his super-competitive high-school - wish it were not so. His guidance counselor suggested that he take AP bio to supposedly maintain a ârigorousâ course-load. I said to him, âIsnât it already rigorous?â GPA is only based on classes up to junior year (as far as college acceptance is concerned) so no worries about that. I am not sure about the golden ticket - some people take an AP but really shouldnât: many students are apparently getting Câs right now in AP lang (and often end up with a C) which I think wonât be so good for colleges.
@SoccaMomma:
"This leads me to a question about Senior year. Are APs as helpful after Junior year? "
It depends on if your schoolâs guidance office uses APs to determine and designate on the outgoing transcript that the student has taken âthe most rigorous curriculumâ the school has to offer.
Further, that is only known to be important if a college states such plainly on their website, or in their admissions materials. This designation, even with the " dreaded" B grade, can place a strong student in a competitive application pool in a stronger position.
