@makemesmart Our school counselor is recommending apps to only 10 schools.
@milgymfam I donât know anything about yellow ribbon or home schooling but I have looked at dance programs as my daughter wants a school with classes she can take though she wonât major. Would LMU or Chapman work at all for your D? I just Googled and both participate in yellow ribbon program. USC has a wonderful newer dance program - MFA - at their Glorya Kaufman school but I donât know if USC is the type of school youâd want to look at for your D.
@janiemiranda I have heard of schools limiting the number of transcripts they will send out. Good thing to know. Hopefully that is a ârecommendationâ and not an edict. I would be happy to offer you our credits, as I doubt I can get D20 to send more than 5 apps.
@milgymfam - Take a look at American. Yellow ribbon, test optional and good dance offerings. Itâs a school that really likes demonstrated interest. If you know you can make the finances work, the ED acceptance rate is something like 80%. Itâs much more challenging in RD. Good luck!
@CAtransplant, theyâre both on her original list that she brought to me- Iâm waiting to see where her test scores end up for those. Itâs not impossible sheâll get something in their ranges. USC is obviously out of her academic range.
@Happy4u, sheâs really only wanting the three states I listed. We live near DC currently and she hates the whole area.
Hi @milgymfam My 11th grader is unlike her older siblings, as well.
FWIW, we are pretty much non-outsourcing homeschoolers. My current college student took absolutely zero APs and only 1 DE course 2nd semester sr yr (so no grades for college app season.) (No co-ops. No online courses.) All of her course work was completed at home with me as her primary teacher except for Russian (and a French Francophone who did book studies with her, but definitely not a teacher or even teacher approach.) She was accepted to every school she applied to with scholarship $$ (including schools like URochester) and was awarded several Us top competitive scholarship. (She had an incredibly strong profile with national and international awards. Pt being that lack of outsourced classes were not a detriment to her application. Homeschoolers do not need to replicate school at homeâŠCA and NY aside.)
We apply strictly by costs, so merit aid dictates where they apply. But, NC and FL are homeschool friendly states, so you should be able to find schools that match her needs.
How about College of Charleston?
@janiemiranda @bigmacbeth
Thatâs a good policy, I donât know whether DSâ school has any such recommendation but currently, my DS has six schools, hopefully it will only increase one or two more.
S20 continues living a relaxed junior year, even though grades are suffering somewhat. I am keeping my cool since he needs to learn self control before he is away at college. It is better he flop and learn now than later. He finally made the appointment with his counselor for our first college planning meeting next week. I will find out if we are the last family on the schedule!
I hope he demonstrates the same zen next year around this time!
@milgymfam One thing I just thought about, where does your Dd want to teach post college? She might want to look at the programs and state licensing reciprocity agreements.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek she wants to live in CA permanently, which is why itâs first and important on her wish list. Barring her ability to have that, she wants to live near the ocean. Sheâs a beach baby and always has been. Her health and happiness were peak when we lived in CA though, both our time in SoCal and NorCal. Having lived in 7 states and visited many more, sheâs had a lot of experiences to choose from.
@milgymfam How about Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks? It looks like they offer a BA in education and a minor in Dance. Also, they seem very generous with their Yellow Ribbon program. https://www.callutheran.edu/veterans/benefits/yellow-ribbon.html
I think they do require SAT/ACT tests, however.
@hgtvaddict thank you for the idea- Iâll look into them. I guess it might be embarrassing to admit but I was initially put off by the name and banner description of an evangelical Lutheran school. Just a quick dive tells me theyâre more open than I would have guessed.
@milgymfam the few kids that I know that are at Cal Lutheran now arenât very religious. However, perhaps there are others here who know more about Cal Lutheran that can chime in?
Edited to add: It looks like they have a Secular Student Association. Seems pretty inclusive.
Cal Lutheran is associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, which is probably the most tolerant/liberal mainline Protestant church. Gay clergy are okay and the Bible isnât believed to be inerrant.
@makemesmart Agree. My takeawayâŠif your kid has a 3.9 uw with many APs, and a 1500+ SAT, they may be a candidate for a T20 school. BUT there are 10 times as many kids that fall into this category as there are seats at those schools, and on top of that, many of those seats go to hooked applicants. So make extra sure your kid has a few reasonable and affordable safeties on their list that they will be thrilled to attend.
@makemesmart @chb088 - there also seem to be an enormous amount of disappointment for CS and COE candidates. These kids are probably checking Naviance and feeling confident about where their stats fall, but it appears your stats need to be significantly higher for impacted/competitive majors. UghâŠnot looking forward to next year.
I know we have a couple of nursing prospects which is equally as competitive. Is anyone on this list planning on applying for CS?
Mine toys with doubling in CS but at a non competitive school. At UNM she can get full tuition and has enough APs to double in environmental science plus math or environmental science plus CS which are both attractive to her. She has been looking at some of the ways math/CS can be used for modeling various systems. Also some interesting research at Sandia in climate change by mathematicians. Trying to see if undergrads can get involved.
@VickiSoCal Check our Planetary Sciences at ASU. Interesting degree, tracks and classes.
