Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

In our school, if you take the exam you are exempt from the class final

@BingeWatcher some colleges do offer credit for AP World History. In fact, my D18ā€™s current #1 choice would give her 3 hours of general elective credit. She is taking the class now, and will take the exam, just in case. Sheā€™s only out a few hours and about $75. Sheā€™s not putting too much pressure on herself, though, knowing her score wonā€™t make or break anything. And yes, it exempts her from the class final, too.

@ShrimpBurrito $75 for the exam is a great deal! Our school charges $97 per exam plus a convenience fee for paying on line! Between my two kids Iā€™ll be paying for seven AP exams this year.

At my Dā€™s school, itā€™s $97 for the first exam, then you get a $25 discount for each additional exam. So actually itā€™s $72, an even better deal. <:-P

AP Euro is hard. I would not recommend for freshmen.

@VickiSoCal thatā€™s what my D16 told her younger sister about AP Euro. She liked history until that class was forced on her freshman year. It boggles my mind why our HS would give it to freshman. At this point, there is nothing anyone can do except not take it but the other option is just World History with the general population.

@veehee is AP Human Geo an option for her?

For reference, my older D17 got:

9 APHUG- 5
10 APEuro- 3
11 APUSH- 5

Currently in econ and teacher feels comfortable she will get a 4 or 5 on both tests.

None of mine ever took AP Euro because their friends warned them about it! FWIW, my two oldest scored 5ā€™s on almost all there other AP (one got a 4 on Physics 2) and both got a 4 on AP World History.

I was just looking at last yearā€™s AP exam results yesterdayā€¦something like 6% of AP World History test takers got a 5.

Edit:
Yep, 6.5%.
7.9% of AP Euro test takers got a 5.

@3scoutsmom nope the only AP class for freshman in Euro. Iā€™m going to call the school and inquire. I assumed most HS AP programs were similar. Apparently not!

@veehee Our school also lets freshmen take AP Comp Sci actually they are pretty flexible on grade level if you can show you have the prerequisites for the class.

Definitely not, @veehee. Among the dozens of AP classes offered at my Dā€™s school, AP Euro is not one of them.

Our school offers 6 AP social studies AP tests, and World History is not one of them.

Our school offers most of the AP classes, hereā€™s the list that they offer. I think the only two they donā€™t offer are Japanese and Italian! I donā€™t think smaller schools could offer as many AP classes, many of them are only offered one period a day and scheduling conflicts are common.

Hi All, This is my first time posting on this thread.

My high school class of 2020 daughter loves music and theater. Sheā€™s extensively involved in her HS band program and the drama dept.

Her high school offers 6 classes a day, plus zero period for some classes. The school is on a block A/B schedule, as well. The school offers no APā€™s for 9th grade and only one in 10th grade, which is AP Human Geog. D will take AP Human Geog next year. Her high school has a rather small selection of AP classes. We may consider dual enrollment at the JC for our daughter, to make up for the lack of APā€™s at her school.

Looking forward to our journey to 2020!

I wonder what is the purpose of offering AP Calculus C as separate class? Thatā€™s really odd. Thereā€™s only two tests, AB and BC.

Welcome @vineyardview !
Iā€™m a big fan of dual enrollment and wish my DD16 had done more. I didnā€™t realise until DS18 came along that students could take DE course online! This is a huge time saver for us. DS18 is currently taking his American History required course online DE. Here students canā€™t start taking DE courses until after 10th grade but DS20 plans to take 3 maybe 4 class DE.

@vineyardview - welcome. Itā€™s pretty calm here on this thread; itā€™ll be interesting as the years go by!
@3scoutsmom - my D16 thought AP music theory was very hard too. Her college gave her lots of credits for her good score, so worth it. Some of the top kids in her class who had never taken music dropped the class; too much learning curve!

just some general thoughts on AP classes for our 3rd kid: (AND, because i canā€™t walk or drive for 5 more weeks, i i have time, so here it goes!)

our s20 will not take any AP classes as a sophomore. Lots of soph kids take AP HuG but heā€™s going to kick out required econ and geography rather than one AP class to give him space as a jr/sr.

When it comes to DE vs AP, we came across a strange situation from our state flagship and credits with our oldest kid. I know its early, but iā€™m guessing S20 will end up there; and we hope for full tuition scholarships. Because of what we know now, we have a full plan on how to have it work all together. this includes taking the ACT test in June of this year; and if he does well or even close to well, we will make plans that dont include DE. If he does just OK, then weā€™ll be looking at getting all the DE as possible.

We will most likely have him take AP calc AB as a junior; and AP calc BC as a senior. Thatā€™s definitely going against the grain here, but we have reasons. He likes math; is good at it, and will probably have it be a part of his higher education. We want the best and solid education with math, we want AP credit for it, and dont think our school offers the best education with AP calc, so we will consider doubling up.

Another thought: we already know is class rank for his first semester. He has a 4.0! we are going to continue to push that hard work. But heā€™s definitely not top kid of his class, because thereā€™s some kids who took 1 or 2 more honors classes. We keep telling him ā€œUnweighted really matters!ā€ What all do you think, guys?
