Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Our school does not allow geometry and Algebra 2 to be taken concurrently. The Algebra 2 curriculum requires knowledge of geometry to it is a prerequisite.

Did anyoneā€™s son or daughter take the AMC 10 Math test today? What did they think?

S20 did - he thought it wasnā€™t too bad (he took it last year too). He wonā€™t qualify for AIME but heā€™s okay with that. Heā€™ll probably take the 10 again next week. S17 took the 10A and 12B in 9th & 10th grade.

I guess I donā€™t fully understand the purpose of the test, besides to qualify for another test. I feel so lost supporting my son. He says he has higher standards than I do for him. He is so focused on school, Robotics, Mathletes, Chess Club and Now golf tryouts. It seems like a lot to me. He wants to go to a ā€œgood collegeā€ and I want to help him get there, I just donā€™t want my lack of knowledge to hold him back.

He said he felt good about 14 answers on the AMC, but there were 25 problems. He liked the challenge of it and talking to the other students afterwards about it. Do I need to get him a tutor for the test next year? He earns straight Aā€™s so is that enough? Iā€™m having trouble understanding whatā€™s important and what isnā€™t?

@Redslp - I think the AMC is fun for kids who find it fun. I donā€™t imagine that tutoring would help very much, since itā€™s mostly time-pressured puzzle solving once you get to the harder problems.

Is your son in math club at school? What do they think?

Anyoneā€™s DC considering taking AP Seminar which is the first class of the AP capstone sequence next year? Not sure if it is just new to our HS or a new AP class. Looking for any info I can find. I already have the brochure from the College Board.

@fretfulmother- BTW- love your user name! Yes, heā€™s in Mathletes. Good idea to check with the coach.

D20 used to do math team but got tired of the attitude regarding gender and race and quit. Now sheā€™s focused on sports for extracurricular and would not have time!

QOTD question of the day which we do over on the 2017 thread- has yours registered for classes for next year yet, and what are they taking? We register this week or next:

Lots of choices and it was hard for him. Iā€™ve been a marching band mom for 7 years now, and its over. :frowning:

signing up for ACT in june to get a baseline.

No math clubs or AMC at his school. sort of urban/low income school. He did AMC8 and was the top scorer in 8th so we liked hearing that.

@bgbg4us 8 classes wow, we have to do a zero just to squeeze in AP comp sci for a 6th class.

I will have her drop it if the zero period starts to impact sleep or grades in other core classes.

I assume she will be on Varsity cross-country since she was this year. Varsity swim has not yet been determined for this year their first meet is in 3 weeks.

@VickiSoCal your varsity swim is just now starting? Our season started at the beginning of the school year. We had Regionals last weekend, and State (Oklahoma) is in about ten days. I figured they were all on a similar schedule!

@bgbg4us what did you do? Iā€™m working on Week 5 of being bedbound with a shattered leg. Lots of time for prowling CC! :>

In California boys water polo is in the fall, girls water polo is in the winter and swim for both genders is in the spring.

D20 has registered for next year. Her school only has 2 AP classes available to 10th graders, and they are elective classes, so D has decided not to take them.

Schedule for Next Year

Honors English 10
Honors Trig/PreCalc
Honors World History
Honors Chemistry
Band
Jazz Band

PE (required) will be taken at the local junior college. D has already taken 3 semesters of foreign language at the junior college (equivalent of 3 years at the high school). This summer, she plans on taking Political Science and Speech at the junior college.

She will continue on the varsity team of her sport in the Fall. Play (drama) performances, marching band, and her budding social life should also keep her very busy.

@ShrimpBurrito - broken ankle here. :frowning: ICE. your broken leg sounds really painful. Iā€™ve started learning to play the Ukulele, but being so homebound is not fun at all. OK --see you around on the boards!!

ICE here too!! :(( Taking calcium now!

@VickiSoCal our school has the same requirements. He took high school Bio in 8th grade and is currently taking pre- AP chem

@3scoutsmom that was the plan originally on our side but the schedule only works such that 8th graders can take 2 high school classes and she took Japanese 1 and Algebra 2. Ultimately I thought getting a jump on language was more important, so she can wrap up her language AP junior year. I think that will be her toughest AP as science and math come easy to her but Japanese does not.

@VickiSoCal this has worked well for because DS18 is taking the Pre-AP Chem this year and they will be taking AP Chem together next year so they can study together:-) My kids are homeschooled through 8th grade so we really didnā€™t have a middle school option for language. DS20 started high school with credits for Algebra 1, Geometry, Bio and half credit required health class. He took Algebra 2 too but the course didnā€™t meet the state standard for credit so heā€™s taking it again this year which is fine with me since I want him to have a strong foundation in Algebra 2.

No summer school for him. He plans to use the summer to complete his Eagle required badges and project.
