Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Not a lot of drownings happening at dance studios?

Freshman year is almost done! It went by so quickly. DD is looking forward to an overnight sports camp. We will be going to Europe after that. No summer classes this time.

Course selection is done for next year. Small private school, no APs offered but all classes are college prep.

English
Chemistry
World history

Rock band (x2!)
Yoga

ECs drum line and club swim. Busy boy. His sis18 goes to a large public magnet school. It’s fascinating to see how different their high school experiences are. Thankfully, I think they are each where they should be.

my DS20 is very chill and probably the least motivated of our 4 kids. However i liked hearing him say the other day how he kind of liked school and didnt mind going. I know that doesnt sound like much, but for him to randomly say that means he’s pretty happy in his large (non-competitive) HS. He was asked to be an ambassador in the fall for the upcoming freshmen and that was a small pat on the back.

they are all so incredibly different, but have so many similar mannerisms and physical traits. Its so bewildering sometimes!

All of the junior college classes that D20 wanted to take are full and she couldn’t register, so now we are trying to scramble and rearrange her summer plans. We found a marching band camp at University of Oregon that she may be interested in trying, and she is going to check to see if she can volunteer at our local library. She also plans on spending a lot of time studying for the PSAT. She pet-sits for our neighbors, since she’s just turning 15, and cannot get a “regular” job around here. Any other suggestions?

Summer:

Week1 D17 and D20 will be camping in Sequoia with their GS troop.

D17 will work the rest of the summer

Week2 D20 will volunteer at GS Daycamp

Week 3-10 Cross country practice 7 am to 10 am every day and online US Gov. A little online studying for SAT2 Math and Bio since we decided to postpone those to the fall.

@VickiSoCal those are great summer activities! I forgot about my D20’s sport; I should get her into a camp for that and perhaps some one-on-one lessons this summer.

Cross country practice isn’t really optional, the season starts the first week of high school. Run with the team, or run alone, you better be running some where!

DD will be a PT nanny this summer. She also has family vacation, team sports camp and another weeklong camp in the mountains. HS sports never really stop for her so at least a couple of days a week until mid-July then everyday until end of the season in the fall. Taking the Bio subject test in June. Oh, and learning to drive this summer.

@ShrimpBurrito Rock Band … how fun!

@tutumom2001 Yep, tons of fun, and it’s a really good program. They frequently send graduates to Berklee.

Yeah, learning to drive for us too.

Good luck to all of our APHUG kids tomorrow!!!

Ugh. Waking a homeschooler up for a 7:30 APHUG exam is not fun at all.

D20 has been dragged to school early almost every day for the last 2 weeks due to D17’s IB/AP tests. She’ll live.

@VickiSoCal S20 is used to sleeping until 9am! The homeschool life. He survived.

D20 thinks she got a 5. She tends towards the cocky.

D survived the APHUG test. She said she was glad I pushed her to study (well, not in those “exact” words, lol) Study guides are now abandoned on the floor.

DS said the AP CSP is easy. Hopefully he does well.

After a month in my home country for summer camp and touring, DS will be doing soccer, hopefully he can make JV. Our township is very competitive in soccer, state champs several times in recent years.

Just launched D17 to college…give myself a pat on the back!! @VickiSoCal , you too!!

Just signed S20 up for a 3 week Mars program - they figure out how to get there and how to survive when they land - combines Engineering and various sciences. He’s also doing a week of fencing.

Drivers Ed will be over winter or spring break (15y9mo for classroom and 16y for permit/driving lesson).

So glad to be finished with S17 and college and have sometime before we do that again!

@MA2012 let’s hope that Mars program isn’t into “authentic assessments”
