Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

My DD is working on a few things…she is pursuing Theater Design/Tech, so every school requires artistic supplements and a digital portfolio with specific elements delineated. She still has a few of those pieces to submit, plus one or two(?) regular applications for schools that don’t use the Common App. Ugh. It seems like it’s never ending. The finish line is getting closer, at least!

Good luck @ildro and @ loganator!!

DS is working on his last RD!
We will have guests coming this weekend and hopefully that will provide some nice distractions from the essay-writing.
Seeing light at the end of tunnel!
Good luck everyone who is still working on college apps and happy new year! ??

Well, after three holiday gatherings so far my son is completely sick of people asking him what school he’s going to and pressuring him to make a choice. Tomorrow is Christmas on his dad’s side and he’s already dreading what he knows is coming. My dad and stepmom even bought him and his brother UMN shirts for Christmas…yeah no pressure there. He keeps telling everyone he really doesn’t have a clue yet. He wants to do more visits and more importantly none of the financial aid stuff will be out until February. That alone might make the decision.

My DS has 2 more RD to finish. Essays are done, I believe. Maybe just need another look-through and tweaking. I can’t wait for it all to be done!

No RD apps, but needs to do a big scholarship application project as well as some smaller essays for a Women in Leadership organization that she was invited to apply to for the same school that she has the scholarship application to do. Plus essays for scholarships through Girl Scouts that she qualifies for since she got her Gold Award. None are a ton of money ($250 or $500) but every bit helps, and with all the effort she went through to ear n her Gold Award she wants to apply.

D is deciding on whether or not to write a honors app essay for one school, but otherwise no more applications things to do here. Still three more auditions to go though.

Yes, lots of essay writing here! We were hoping to be done but the EAs didn’t work out as planned. Also, S20 has a part time job which he is supposed to be doing! But essays take precedent. He’s not enjoying this time of year - that’s for sure!

Jobs, yes, DS is going to look for a part time job ASA the application cycle is over. Can’t wait for him to earn his own gas money!

@beebee3 No dorm room decor conversation, but D20 “just wants to know!” where she is going so she can get Converse sneakers in her (future) school’s colors. She is one of the many OOS deferred U Mich kids, has acceptances at two other OOS large state schools, has another round of EA decisions coming at end of January, and still has a few RD applications. So it’s going to be a while before she can make a decision. Lots of her friends already have ED acceptances and know where they’re headed, so she’s getting antsy. Fortunately, unlike many of you, the family did not ask about her college plans over the holidays.

DS20 still has 2 RD apps to get out and he is dragging his feet. They are for 2 of his favorite schools too, so it’s not that he doesn’t want to do them. I keep nagging and he keeps putting it off. I’m at the point where I am going to just stop saying anything. He is in to 2 schools already (low on his list) and has 2 apps in to 2 other schools that are high on his list. The two he needs to do are really high on his list though and would be great for him. I wish he would just do them already!!!

My S did 5 apps for EA/ED and got into his ED…I don’t think he would have been putting a lot of effort in now if he hadn’t. I think he would have sent the RD apps to schools with no supplements, or maybe matriculated at one of the EA (likely) acceptances. I am learning for my 2nd born…get as many supplemental essays done in October as you can!

D20 still has 3 RD apps to finish, as well as scholarship apps, all due within a week. She is dragging her feet and just wanted to downtime after the semester finally ended because it was by far her busiest, with a full class schedule + a night class, her job, ECs, etc. I’ve finally asked if she can commit to one half day to finish everything up, and I’ll help her stay on task to get through the list. She was good with this plan so she can knock it all out and stop having all these tasks in the back of her mind all the time. Just hoping everything can be finished and she can start the new year relaxed.

So my daughter handled the questions on Christmas like a pro! She had a few versions of answers that worked fine. She said oh I applied to 7 schools that offered the program I’m interested in and was accepted to all of them but Worcester State checked all the boxes and I really feel comfortable there. Or she would add WS is the most affordable because I need my masters for this program so that’s 6 years! Instead of 4 She was very confident. She’s happy and is content with her choice

My D20 had 5 or 6 more schools to apply to in the RD round. She has 4 acceptances from the EA round, so she’s having trouble getting motivated to finish up her RD essays. But, a couple of the RD schools are high on her list, so she should at least finish those up, and she’s very close on a couple more, so she should go ahead and finish those. I tried to tell her weeks ago that she should finish them, so that she wouldn’t have to do it over break, but she asked me to quit nagging her, so I did. Now the deadlines are fast approaching, so I’m back to gentle reminders.

That is great @smithve !!!

DD20 had all her apps for schools and most scholarships done in November, and just completed 2 more scholarship apps this past week. She’ll have one more scholarship app to do which opens at the end of January and then I think that will be the end. Yay. Best of luck to all your kiddoes who are approaching the finish line of applications, too!

D20 has one more essay for honors college and if she wants to apply for any outside scholarships. She also has two interviews coming up for scholarships.

D20 submitted 2 honors program apps this week and is still contemplating submitting 2 RD apps as well - but she’s wavering so may or may not follow through.

D20 has 2 RD apps to complete. One just needs the finishing touches on the essays. The last one has one long essay and frankly it would not be a horrible thing if she just took a pass. She has great apps in and already in in her major at our state flagship so not sure the last one really makes a difference.
