Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Our kids are smart but not worldly! And if my kid AND the colleges expect me to be paying for what constitutes over 4 years a quarter of a million dollar education, then I am going to check behind my kid to make sure all the boxes are taken care of.

My kids have traveled internationally on their own, but this is a different thing. I agree with you!

Trust but verify. It’s nobody’s business that a parent has access to their kid’s portal. Glad you caught the error @mtemmd, that is a good example of why it’s a good idea IMO. I still have access to D17’s portal at her college. This is a partnership in our house.

While you are looking at portals and financial savings, look at the university’s student health insurance. If your student is covered under your insurance and there are providers and pharmacies close to campus, you might be able to opt out of college’s student health insurance and save a decent amount of money.

For the UC system, if you opt out, the student can still use on campus student health services for a minimal fee (<$20/visit). The school just wants to make sure that major expenses (ex. hospitalization, broken bones, etc) have coverage, especially for international students.

So, the USPS lost a scholarship letter for DS. It showed it was supposed to arrive early this week on informed delivery and has not shown up even though everything else slated for that day was here on schedule. I reported it missing this morning, but I’m not sure that will do much but let them know.

Very frustrating. I would obviously really like to know what that letter said and as far as I can see they don’t post it anywhere online.

@cshell2 I would be very frustrated, too! Why not email the college, explain the situation, and ask them to resend the letter?

@cshell2 Something similar happened here. We got an invitation to a dinner for everyone with a scholarship, but hadn’t received the scholarship letter! S20 emailed the school and they resent the letter.

Any other parents of 2020 here waiting to see if their kids got into NEU EA? Results should be out in the next couple of weeks. It’s definitely one of DS20’s favorite schools so waiting on pins and needles here. I know he will be fine wherever he ends up, still ???

DD20 changed her NEU app from EA to ED2 at the last minute, so decisions for that should be out a couple weeks after EA.

She really loves NEU and was nervous after looking at the results from last year - there seemed to be a lot of high stat deferrals in the EA round, and after getting deferred by her ED1 (Penn) and another EA school (CWRU), she didn’t want to take the chance.

Good luck!

Good luck to you too, @samsmom20. The stats are crazy! NEU is a bit of a reach gpa wise (3.98w, thankful for his 35 ACT) and I would have loved to give him the ED edge. But only if I could have been certain the NPC was a done deal. He has a few other top choices so we are trying to keep it all in perspective.

So far he is in to all his safeties (prob applied to more than needed). He won’t hear from targets until the end of March. Then hopefully we have decisions to make.

@mtemmd I’m not sure how much of an edge ED is vs EA, but the thought of another deferral and having to wait until late March for answers was so stressful, so she really wanted to give it her best shot at NEU. It’s also a slight reach for her (4.0 UW, but “only” a 1460 SAT).

She also has a couple safety admissions, one of which she is pretty excited about (Pitt Honors).

@samsmom20, DS20 is also into Pitt honors! I have to say I knew nothing about Pitt until his girlfriend got in there and we went to visit her/tour the school (she’s a freshman). I was impressed!

Good luck!!! Will be keeping an eye out for your update in the (hopefully) not too distant future!

@samsmom20 Oh, I think ED is a big advantage over EA at most schools. It looks like through ED last year the acceptance rate was around 41%. This is probably almost double the EA rate. They know those kids really want to attend, and can pay their EFC or more…good luck to your D.

Next big round of decisions here come 1/31. The waiting is so hard this time of year.

We are waiting for Purdue on Wednesday. I feel like everything will fall into place after that.

However, we have applied to several extra scholarships for backup schools. There are one or two that could sway the decision. But without knowing when those results will come, it’s hard to know when to either let it go or commit otherwise.

I’m really hoping to have some answers and decisions by mid-February.

To make that Jan 31 notification date better it is right on my DD 18th birthday… She will not only hear from two more schools but also about two big scholarships to schools she has been accepted to. It has me completely stressed out for her but not much I can do. Hopefully, there is enough good news to offset any disappointment.

I agree that the next 4-6 weeks will be stressful as we all wait (not as patiently these days, at least for me) for answers that will make decisions clearer. I am doing some planning at my office for travel and hope that I can make it all fit together, but it sure would be nice if DS20 had more information before I have to make firm travel arrangements. I don’t want to miss a moment!

Good luck to all!

I can relate to those waiting not so patiently! DS20’s top three choices are EA decisions that will be released end of January through Feb. 15. This waiting is so hard!

Son’s first semester grades were strong- all As in 5 AP classes (including AP Physics C, the hardest class at his school) and an honors elective. His school will send those out at the end of the month but I wondered if he should upload to his portals for these EA schools?
These grades are consistent with past years but that was with 4 APs. Two of the schools are very competitive/selective.
Thoughts?

@SCgirl1 I would not have him upload them to his portal (who knows what that might mess up) but he can drop a line to his AO saying he wasn’t sure if the first-semester transcript is needed with the transcript attached. They will either open it and consider it or not but at least he tried.

I think at this point a lot of schools have made decisions and it will only impact him if he is on the cusp. Good luck!

General Question:

How soon after your child declares that they are officially “done” with a college they have been accepted to do you purge the data? I’m talking about officially ditching all of the paperwork that has stacked up and making them decline the admittance?

I am tempted to start purging now. When we started this process, they were still clueless as to what they wanted. So we applied to many places. I need to get rid of some of this stuff. However, I know they officially have until May 1 and am afraid they may change their mind before then.

If they are adamant about not attending, do you go ahead with the purge?

@Momofmanytoo given the roller coaster that can occur between now and 5/1, I would purge nothing until then. Can you put it in a box and get it out of your way rather than throwing it out?
