Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

I should have pushed for the University of Iowa. I think that it is a fantastic school in a great town. They are very generous with Merit too. I visited Mizzou back when my D18 was going through the process. At the time, Mizzou was surrounded by all this negative press and enrollment was down. It seems like that is all behind them and hopefully, they are able to continue to thrive.

I have nothing but amazing memories of traveling with my daughter and visiting all these great Universities and cities. At that time, I had never been to St Louis and having that unique experience with her was absolutely awesome.

People, as stressful as this process is, you also have to take a back seat and enjoy everything about it. We will never get these times back. Going from 53 to 55 seems like nothing has happened. But for these kids is a whole new world and seeing how this world changes through their own eyes is an amazing thing. I have one more trip/experience with my S20 to the State of Florida and UF and then ???

@lilmom what did your daughter think of Explore USC?

Found out today that DD was accepted into FSU honors! Now just waiting on honors and presidential from one school and then will have all her info. She will probably fly down to Florida for a second look at FSU with my hubby in the not too distant future to help make her decision.

@lkg4answers, she enjoyed the day very much. Some of the FB group met up for dinner the night before and they sat together during the first sessions. It was nice to see. She was definitely wowed and can she herself there but is still waiting for $ as well as decisions from other schools.

How about your kiddo?

Exactly the same! It was very well done and she came out saying that she could see herself being happy there. She is a NMF so is guaranteed 50% but it is still $29K plus housing. She’s gotten into a couple of UCs and SLO so we’re hoping USC offers more than 50%.

My son, along with his cousin and 2 close friends, were accepted to CALPOLY SLO for Computer Engineering yesterday. We are thrilled as it’s a wonderful hands-on school for engineering, great location, and a UC education at a state school price. We’re still waiting on his UCs and one private school, but it’s a good feeling to know that he’s in at a school he loves and we can afford. @lilmom and @lkg4answers - any particular reasons why your children are unlikely to attend?

@Redslp unlikely to attend USC or SLO? Even with a scholarship, USC is expensive. SLO is a fantastic school - especially for engineering - and has a great college community. Congratulations to your son! My first went to UC Davis but his strong second choice was SLO. For my second, her major at SLO is probably not as aligned to what she wants to study as it is at other schools that she has heard from.

@lkg4answers - Congratulations to your daughter on being accepted at SLO and USC! UC Davis is a wonderful school and community; unfortunately it’s too close to home for my son’s comfort level.

FSU Honors here too! It’s down to FSU and UGA. UGA would have to swoop in with a sweet merit scholarship quickly, though. S is going to visit FSU later this month, and he is fantasizing about accepting the offer in person at the admissions office.

My D is also strongly considering committing to FSU with Honors, as well. We think we have finally figured out how to send her to an admitted students day with her dad in April. I’m so excited – I feel like she is so close to a decision, and I have a feeling it will be FSU.

@Redslp, it’s unlikely that my D will attend SLO because she’s interested in an interdisciplinary major which is possible at the UCs where she applied as well as USC and another private.

Our oldest graduated from SLO and enjoyed every minute there. DH and I loved visiting him and hanging out in downtown SLO, too!

Congrats on all of the acceptances!

Congrats to your kids @ShrimpBurrito and @amsunshine on the FSU honors! Tough call for us to have DD go so far away (we’re in PA) but it’s definitely a strong contender. It would be so much easier if FSU were in Orlando and we could fly direct, and cheaper. Not ruling it out due to having to do connecting flights of course, but just wish that wasn’t the case.

Those who have chosen FSU over UF, do you mind sharing the rationale? (Major? Honors? Scholarship?) Will help my D’s decision making process.

@tnknes There’s a bit of discussion about FSU vs UF on the last couple pages of the FSU Honors thread. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/florida-state-university/2172100-fsu-honors-p6.html

My D is leaning FSU Honors over UF. She did not apply to the honors program at UF because, after reading about it extensively, neither of us was convinced it was a good fit for her. She’s been accepted to both, and we’ve been busy researching the course offerings for the business schools at both schools, the opportunities for business students at both schools, the dorms, the study abroad programs and just other things about the environments at both schools, etc. To be sure, UF has a well respected business school, but FSU is no slouch. It seemed to us, however, that there were a lot more online only business courses at UF, whereas at FSU, there were more options for live classes available in business, and with honors, she will get priority registration. Also, FSU has a new business honors program for rising sophomores that sounds really interesting, and their new business school building is slated to open in fall, 2021 (and looks amazing). She will still visit both schools in April, but as of right now, our whole family is leaning FSU. (We think we’ve finally even gotten Dad on board, who was team UF for awhile just based on rankings). I think the choice is probably really dependent on your kid’s major, personality, and preferences.

@tnknes for my DD she did not consider UF as she plans to major in actuarial science and UCF and FSU have a higher level recognition from the Society of Actuaries than UF does. UF is recognized as introductory while UCF and FSU are ranked as advanced. So for us it was totally based on major and she applied to just UCF and FSU as far as Florida schools (we’re in PA and she also applied to three schools in PA).

As a small aside I also have a local friend whose child is currently a college sophomore at USF and when they did their Florida school tours she commented that they didn’t like the feel of UF, she said that the feeling from the tour guide was that they were superior to all FL schools and it just felt snobby to her. Before the tour UF was a top choice for her daughter and after the tour she had little interest. Again, just one person’s experience, but those were her and her daughter’s feeling about it.

Thanks @ShrimpBurrito and @amsunshine
We are visiting both schools in April and will decide after that. D interested in pre-med track. Got in FSU honors and UF regular.

Thanks @voyagermom

S20 was accepted to both FSU and UF (We are OOS) Business and he is only considering UF and not FSU. We will be visiting one of the admitted days next week at UF and I was hoping to visit FSU as well which would make sense since they are about 2 hours away from each other. But based on the research he has done, he is not even interested in even visiting FSU. So it will now come down to UF and UGA unless one of the other schools surprises us with a March Madness upset.

Congrats to all! I am surprised by how many people apply for and go OOS. Are we the only ones staying in-state?
