I guess the question is, is this normal this time of year or has the pandemic caused more colleges to grab kids off the waitlist? I donât know the answer.
@privatebanker Thank youâweâre so happy for him as well. Weâve been following UMass on Instagram, and yes, the photography is gorgeous. Iâll admit to being a little jealous that DS will get to spend the next 4 years looking at those Pioneer Valley sunsets!
So far all the schools mentioned opening their wait lists are schools that have done this in the past. Lehigh U and U Chicago were accepting students from their wait list last April as well. Also Duke accepted WL students in April last year. For people that are interested on how WL moved last year:
Daughter made her official decision today and she has decided on FSU! We live close to Philadelphia so sheâll be quite far away which is going to feel very weird as my D18 goes to Temple so has been close by. Iâm excited for her and promptly went online to order some FSU shirts!
I guess I shouldnât buy plane tickets, right? When does one normally do that? I was worried about the thanksgiving flights selling out, but with covid, who knows.
Iâve been thinking the same thing. Last year, I was already booking fall break and Thanksgiving flights for D19. Even though theyâre cancellable, just seems so unlikely that weâll need them, at this point.
When our older D was attending school on the opposite coast, we would buy tickets in advance because she could fly Southwest. There is no charge for changes and has a generous baggage allowance.
Itâs also good to find out midtermss/finals schedule before booking flights.
My DD NC school just sent out a notice that all orientation dates are to be virtual now⌠Considering the last date was 5 weeks before school starts I am reading the tea leaves about an online first semester.
Colleges are just cesspool breeding grounds for illnesses. College professors are not going to be in the young healthy adult category. People keep discussing colleges in terms of students being in that category. Yes. But, they arenât the professors.
Equally, I donât see the current approach sustainable long term. I dont envy trying to figure this out.
S20 orientation was to be held right before the start of the fall semester. It was moved online a week or two ago. At the very least, the colleges are considering the possibility of the fall semester being online.
I personally donât see the fall semester being in-person or at least not the entire semester.
Ohio State president said he anticipates football season will not go on as usual in the fall. Thatâs the first time Iâve seen anything from colleges addressing fall semester.
How is everyone feeling about a potentially online first semester (or even year)?
My DD is not thrilled but also would not defer as there is very little else to do right now. Itâs not like a normal year where she could take a gap year to travel, work, or volunteer. We have a high-risk member in our household so right now it looks like even a summer job is off the table.
My college jr is part of a 5th yr masters program. All of her courses for fall of sr yr were already going to be online grad courses. She just made the decision (wo talking to us first) to not renew her lease for the fall. It was a really hard decision for her bc it is not what she envisioned for sr yr. (and this is on top of being disappointed bc she was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship for this summer that was obviously rescinded.) She can use the $$ she is saving on housing for her 5th yr. Anyway, she made her decision bc she figures the likelihood of anything being normal in the fall is pretty much zero, so why pay rent if she canât be out doing what she wants to do when her classes were already going to be online.
Our high school sr hasnât even made it that far in her thought processes. Her U has canceled summer school classes but hasnât yet canceled in-person orientation??? Not sure what is going on there. I donât think it is going to sink in until orientation is canceled.
