Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

My son isn’t 18 yet so he hasn’t registered to vote. If he’s going to school in the same state can he just vote on campus? Of course, then he wouldn’t be voting for the local positions. I guess I’m not sure how it all works. I’ve pretty much been in the same place my entire life.

Ah, well then I must be wrong about the resident thing! Thought it had to be your permanent address but I guess not. Well, My DD will still be a PA voter and not Florida as that’s where she has set herself up to vote.

^^ It may vary by state. My D will also vote absentee for CA, because that is where she is registered.

D20 committed to Washington University in St. Louis tonight! Finally!! Yay ??

D18 still hasn’t decided. Only one of his options requires an answer tomorrow. I’m looking forward to having this settled… so we can move on to worrying about fall being unsettled!

We’re done! D20 committed to UCF in the Burnett Honors college! It feels good to be moving on to the details of meal plans and roommates but there is still the uncertainty of how Fall is going to pan out… really hoping she gets to start on campus - these poor kids have been through enough this year!

A dumb question…the commit deadline on May 1 means…11.59PM on May 1st…right?

(just trying to confirm…there is a last minute change in plans because of a waitlist decision. still waiting for their aid details which they promise by end of tomorrow)

@hs2020dad Yes we got an email from a college that it is 11:59 on May 1st.

Happy 5/1 to all! I know this date’s significance is different this year but WE MADE IT! Wherever you and your student are today on the crazy roller coaster ride that has been the college search and selection process for the class of 2020, know that you will also make it through to 6/1, first semester and beyond!! It is truly amazing what we have done to get to this point and today we will celebrate in whatever way is available to us. Mine involves carry out of my student’s choice with a focus on dessert ? ? and hanging her college’s flag outside.

@Cheeringsection Username matches the post! Congrats to your daughter, and congrats to you for being her cheeringsection. Flag and carryout/dessert sounds perfect.

Thank @mom2jgd ! We all have our role to play here. ?

Congrats to all for braving this journey. My S20 accepted Stanford last night!! Never in a million years expected this outcome - getting in and (eventually) going to school across the country! My S20 reminded me of the movie UP where the old man has to let all of his things go in order to save the kid and continue to fly upwards. To new journeys…

For those that have had high school graduation cancelled , have you had any luck getting cap and gown orders cancelled/refunded? What company did you use?

Our caps and gowns were part of senior year tuition and not something we order on our own and came in the mail a few weeks ago. However, the HS has decided to have commencement on the 22nd anyhow, so he’ll be using it.

I did not read the entire thread but will offer my 2 cents based on our recent college experiences with our only son. Our son has always done well in school and scored a 35 on the ACT and 1530 on the SAT which placed him in the top .5% in the country. He will graduate this year with 36 AP credit hours. He was in the marching band for all 4 years which is a large time commitment, National Honor Society, leader of the Computer Club, did 3 summers at Duke TIP camps, etc. Neither my wife or myself went to a 4 year college so did not have any direct experience but I thought our son should have a pretty good shot at being accepted to one of the top schools. We toured Stanford, Yale, Harvard, MIT, Rice, Georgia Tech and UT Austin. We hired a consultant to help him through the application process and with assistance on his essays. He ended up being accepted at Georgia Tech, UT Austin and UT Dallas. UT Dallas offered a scholarship that would pay for the tuition and the other two schools offered nothing. Even though it will entail paying OSS tuition he has chosen to go to Georgia Tech and we are happy that we are able to do this for him to start off his adult life.

After what we experienced I can only imagine what sort of resume’s the kids that get accepted into the top schools have. I know that Georgia Tech is a top school but I am referring to the other schools on the list. I am also at a lost on what it takes to get a merit scholarship. I did not think he would be offered a full ride but I thought that he would receive an offer of some kind from schools other than UT Dallas. I guess my point is that it is much more competetive out there than what I expected. In retrospect we probably would have had him apply to a few more schools that were more middle of the road rather than the top to see if there were any offers that included financial incentives just to have more options. If your child is wanting to go to one the top tiered schools they need to have not only the grades but some outside activities that really make them stand out.

@TheDoge thanks for posting. Yes, as you found out, the HYPSM type colleges are extremely difficult to get an acceptance to, especially in regular decision, since they can and do easily reject hundreds and hundred’s of applicants with perfect scores every year.

I don’t know what your son’s GPA is but maybe he had a shot at Rice if you had applied early decision? Otherwise, getting an acceptance to GT, UT-Austin and UT-Dallas is really good. Most colleges in the Top 50 don’t give any kind of academic merit, it’s all financial aid.

To be honest with you, I’m really surprised your private consultant didn’t give you a better feel for the college admissions landscape unless they were just working on the essay portion of the application?

Again, happy he landed at GT and I’m sure he will thrive there. Congratulations!

Our consultant did let us know which of these would be stretch schools. The comment about early decision was interesting. On all of the college tours we went on they said that there was no difference between early and regular decision on the chances of acceptance.

@TheDoge as a mother of a child that did get accepted into those elite schools I have to say it is a lottery in my opinion of what they are looking for in that year’s class.

@TheDoge Congrats on Georgia Tech! To get merit you have to apply to schools that offer merit. The more selective the school the less like they are to offer merit. Many people get confused about this because those same schools are also often very generous with NEED based aid because they call them ''scholarship". Some people go into this process thinking of merit as a reward for doing so well in high school when in fact schools offer merit because a student is able to offer something that they need. Some schools, including UTD, offer merit to high stats kids because they want those stats to boost their numbers. UTD is a young school and trying to grow their programs quickly with the brightest kids they can find but as UTD’s program grows they have been steadily raising the bar for merit. Schools like Stanford don’t need to offer merit aid to get the student body they want.

??? I have to be honest with you, this is one of the strangest comments I have heard on CC that all of the colleges that you toured would have said this? A simple google search would show the opposite. For example for the Fall 2019 entering class at Rice University, the early decision acceptance rate was 16% versus 8% regular decision. Even when you factor in recruited athletes, legacy, big donors, etc. almost always EA/ED will give you a higher acceptance rate. For Fall 2020, Harvard and Yale early action was 13%, regular decision was around 3%. I believe MIT is the only college on your list where applying early doesn’t really matter.
