Just ordered more cloth masks so DD20 will have enough for a week. Not a fun purchase but necessary.
@Cheeringsection We tried to find cloth masks the either matched the colors of most of our daughter’s clothes or had neat prints she liked. It was the only way to make that purchase even remotely ‘fun’. She has a combo of plain masks, Harry Potter themed one, a cactus print, a couple Batik prints, etc.
Yes @beebee3 we tried to do the same and it did help. Just not what we thought would be on the packing list when we started this journey.
sharing article about the “new college drop-off.”
The University of Denver released their return to school requirements July 27th. DU has partners with National Jewish Health, the nations leading pulmonary research hospital, to set up it return to campus policies.
-
All students must take a 2 hour covid-19 course, focusing on student responsibility and the fallout of non compliance. Covid-19 policies are now part of the honor code.
-
All returning students must “quarantine” for 14 days prior to their registered return to campus date. I used quotes, because DU is allowing flexibility to those with jobs, internships and other responsibilities. Students/families can travel during quarantine. Our quarantine will start Aug 26th.
-
All returning students must provide a negative covid-19 test, within 10 days of move in date. DU is requiring the viral test (nasal swab), and not accepting the antibody test. DU and NJH is providing students that cannot be tested prior to returning to Denver access to viral tests with a guaranteed 48 hour turnaround time. Testing is free of charge.
-
Move in is over 3 days and each student is allowed 2 helpers and 90 minutes.
-
Students will be required to log into an app and go through a symptom check 2x per day.
-
DU will be doing random testing throughout 1st quarter. Free of charge
-
The app will also track (may opt out) students on campus in the event of a positive test. We are told they will geofence campus.
I feel pretty good about the current plan. Of course so much will depend on the social responsibility of each student.
Similar to Umich’s plan. Test before arrival, symptom checks on an app, online covid course. Hope the kids get to stay!
I wonder what they (all colleges with the symptom app) will do with a kid who wakes up with a sore throat. No fever, no cough, no other symptoms except a sore throat. Straight to quarantine? Immediate test? Banned from leaving room?
My D20 is taking a gap year so no following for school plans or anything like that, but she was just accepted as a trainee in a ballet company and all training will be done in masks. They’re trying their best to be able to continue to train in person and not shut down again. We are setting up her dance room in our new house just in case.
that’s great @milgymfam !
Move-in is this weekend for our daughter, just received an email this morning outlining some additional restrictions to move-in and the first few weeks of college. They had already made move-in a multi week process for freshman-seniors.
I guess we will see how this goes, she is still adamant that she wants to go this year in person. Almost done packing, we just have a few more things that need to go through the washer before being chucked into the last bag.
Two successful move ins last week. D20 at UNC, and we had 2 hours to unload into her room and help get her set up. Then 2 days later helped S18 move into an apartment near his school with similar time constraints. Thank goodness they can order from Amazon if we forgot anything. FDOC was Monday for both, and they are both done and home by Thanksgiving.
Minnesota has a 45 minute move-in time limit which seems kind of ridiculous to me, but I have a minimalist son that would just take his hiking backpack full of stuff if given the option. Of course he would realize later that he forgot about stuff like towels and sheets…he would probably STILL just carry on without half of it. When he heard his roommate wanted to bring a futon and tv he just groaned. He doesn’t want to have to figure out where they’re going to put all this in a very small space and he’s not a TV person at all. He’ll stream Netflix on his laptop, but that’s about it.
Successful move-in here as well, smooth very well thought out from a parent’s perspective seeing how campus was set up. Also kind of fun to see the varying levels of move in prepared-ness by different families - some achieved with almost military precision, some looked like child had realized they were going to college that morning and thrown all belongings into a few garbage bags, literally.
She is done and home by Thanksgiving, fingers crossed it all goes well!
Thanks for the update. Is UNC having many in-person classes this fall?
Great to hear about successful move-ins. I will be helping my D20 move into her dorm at FSU next week and I’m hoping all will go smoothly. Will report back from my quarantine quarters after I return.
@amsunshine we are heading from PA to FSU for a move in (Landis) next week too :-). And likewise will need a 14 day quarantine afterwards as well. Thankfully the school I teach at is starting virtually so I will still be able to work.
Wishing both of our Noles a good move in and semester!
@socaldad2002 not too many. Mostly just freshman seminars, which are smaller classes. They offered CarolinaAway to anyone who wanted just online classes, so the on campus population is only at 60%. I heard Duke only let certain years come back?
Thanks for the update. Yes, Duke is only allowing on-campus housing this fall to Freshman and Sophomores. They have to completely move-out at Thanksgiving and are giving the housing priority to Juniors and Seniors next spring.
It seems freshman students are getting mostly online classes. I have a feeling that most professors & grad student teachers are not comfortable with in-person classes making almost all classes remote this year. It’s a real shame, I thought once they created a “bubble” on campus that they would allow more student and faculty interaction but it seems most universities are taking a very cautious approach. I don’t see things changing in the spring (and that goes for my online HS student too)…It’s extremely disappointing after the horrible spring they had this year.
My DD moved in a made it through the first week of classes at ECU. Block scheduling- two classes in person, one online her first block. She said kids are partying so we will see how long this lasts.
The partying at ECU has been all over the news. I think that is what universities across the nation are watching and are fearful of.
