D has 8-10 possible schools, may whittle down or expand the list depending on new SAT scores (if any) and whether visits can happen in the fall. Most are low reaches or high reaches, I think… hard to classify any of them with her lopsided scores and lack of Naviance/
scant history of kids going to LACs from her high school. We’re shooting in the dark.
I would REALLY like to find one or two more “high” safeties (if there is such a thing)/low matches that my D could like and not feel bad about. It’s extra-hard to find that fit in a LAC that is also a safety. D seems more open to somewhat larger schools now than before and I think it may be more likely to find camaraderie in a safety that has more than 3000 students than in something smaller. I also think a safety that is in an especially appealing college town or fun area of an attractive city and has a beautiful campus would help as well. I’ve been wracking my brain to find something like that…so if anyone has suggestions for a school of that description with at least 2500 students up to maybe 8000…preferably in the Mid-Atlantic into Ohio, as far South as Virginia (maybe NC, as my sister lives there) and maybe as far north as NY State. I though maybe Loyola Baltimore, but my D is not so crazy about being in Baltimore (or really, any city quite that large). Unfortunately none of our in-state schools seem to be good fits (for various reasons). I won’t blame anyone for not being able to come up with anything because I’ve been scratching my head over it for months. Will consider a flight to another area as a last resort If the campus is not far from an airport but it would have to be an awfully appealing school/community for my D to go that far for a safety.
D21 has 12 on her list, three are reach, five are match and four safeties. She will apply ED to her first choice and EA to at least two. She has been laser-focused on her ED school for several years and we all feel it is a perfect fit. Praying decision day will be 2020’s redemption, lol.
@Rue4, I thought Roanoke had rolling admissions. They did at one point. I recall a teammate of my daughter’s got accepted before the start of her senior year. I’m sure you already know this but thought I would mention!
D is currently working with a list of 10. She might add or subtract one or two as she digs deeper into researching her target schools and to leave room for serendipity. While I’m sad we can’t visit, the online information sessions have mostly been pretty good.
@inthegarden Have you looked at Ithaca College? Not sure how long of a drive that would be into NY for you. I haven’t been there in a few years but I remember a pretty campus on a hill overlooking a lake and a really cute downtown area.
@inthegarden - if NC is in the mix, have you looked at Elon? Definitely not an interesting town, but it’s a beautiful campus. My daughter is very intrigued and everyone from our HS that goes there loves it.
My kid has 15 on his list. To be honest - that’s too many. I’m going to work to push him to narrow it down. That said, if he wants to apply to that many, it’s up to him. I’ve been through this rodeo before though, and I know that my kids get tired. To that end, I’ll encourage him to really get his top 5-7 in. If he plays the ED card (and he will), then hopefully we will be wrapped up in mid-December.
D21 has 8 or 9 currently. 2 reach, 3 match and 3(4) secure. Essay is done, scheduling (virtual) interviews for those who offer. Doing virtual tours as none are local and we missed window on visiting. Waiting for 8/01 when college specific requirements come out. List is pretty solid now, changed a good deal from preliminary list 6-12 months ago. Buckle up!
S21 has 8 on his list:
6 in state publics
1 in state private
1 OOS Public (but it’s only 2.5 hrs away closer than half of the in state schools on his list lol!)
Our district just sent out an email they are officially cancelling all SAT and ACTs from Aug through Oct. so kids will be scrambling for seats wherever they can find them. At least those looking to take the test which I think is becoming fewer every week.
My S will apply to 8 to 10 colleges. Probably closer to 8 is my guess.
Thanks @Solstice155 . Hadn’t really looked at dates specifically, as she just decided to add Roanoke. Looks like EA in by Sept. 15, decision by Oct. 2. Rolling starts a bit later. We need financial safety as well as admission safety, so knowing $ will come a bit later, but I think any admits will take some of the pressure off. My kid has a lot of reaches, some of which seem quite plausible, but who knows- especially this year!
Can someone tell me, when do colleges notify people about financial aid? Is there a lag after the admissions decision? What about EA decisions–do they give FA notice early as well?
I see several people mentioning fee waivers. Anyone care to share who has offered them for doing the online visits or other interest shown? I’d love to eliminate a few application fees, it is going to get pricey.
DS has Alabama on his list but he is waiting to see if they remain as generous with their merit to NMFs plus last year they offered a fee waiver. I do not recall the exact date but it seems like it was in October or so.
@jeneric We have rescheduled pictures to next Sunday since the weather is not looking good this afternoon-rainy/hot. Thanks for the idea of face mask. I thought of that around May and a friend said—NO!! The other day my husband suggested wearing masks for one, so I think we will do that. For my s19, my favorite family pic is when we all wore sunglasses. This is definitely the year of the mask!
@eb23282 funny question as my daughter said what is to stop someone from saying they are number 3…Of course I told her that would be wrong ethically…etc and what if they actually checked, called the school and asked GC not for the specific rank but if the rank she listed was true.
All that said my D21 goes to a large HS (class of 750) and based on the school profile, past applicants, GPA, AP classes taken etc. they can extrapolate if the specific class rank set forth in the application makes sense.
Also kind of like every kid can self report AP scores.
Maybe it is totally discounted by AOs but I figure why not submit.
Also did you folks see the in OK two kids at an ACT testing center on July 18 tested positive for Covid. ACT was recommending but not requiring masks and reportedly basically no one was wearing.
