Well I think that was my mistake–I gave him the out in the first place because he complained so much about it. Part of me feels like why should I spend the money if you don’t want to do this optional thing, but I now wish I had just said “You’re going” because I think it would have been better in the long run.
But thanks for your comments. I am going to talk to him about doing this workshop.
I’m sure it’s significantly easier than getting into a UC school from in state. Iowa is at the middle of the Big 10 in terms of selectivity. If you’re looking at UW-Madison, it’s definitely easier than that.
I meant to ask how easy is it to travel to University of Iowa from California? When I was looking at Uof I, it seemed like you had to fly to Chicago, then drive a few hours on top of that. So just wondering from a practical standpoint about getting to and from Uof I from California.
I would happily go back in time a few years! 2020 stinks.
I don’t think we will be able to visit schools this fall, maybe Davidson if they are able to give tours. I am hoping we can travel in the spring. With D21 we visited all the schools before he applied so he just did one accepted student day. That was mostly for his dad to see the school, he had already made up his mind.
With D21 I guess it will be a leap of faith if she is not able to visit before she has to make a decision. There is a part of me thinks she should just apply in state and forget about all the essays and stress.
Last week we spent some time looking at schools and watching virtual tour. Bowdoin has been added to the list, she like the Q & A with the students. I was hoping to add more safety/likely schools that are closer to home but she was not interested.
College Board emailed her that the location of the August test has changed, but when she logged in it was the same school, but it looked lake they added a building to the address. I wish they would just confirm or cancel.
Here is the NYT survey of COVID-19 cases in D1 colleges/universities since spring. Frankly, it is quite disconcerting that some of these universities with the most cases are still planning to have in-person classes starting August.
I think Des Moines is the closest major airport to Ames. LAX had direct flights pre-COVID - not sure of others or the current status @MorseLewis - you could certainly find a ton of connecting.
Three that come to mind are Marquette (good merit $$), IIT/Illinois Tech, and Rose Huleman in Indiana. Not sure if IIT has football or marching band though.
2020 hasn’t been especially bad for me, just the same stuff we are all dealing with. I had about $70-80,000 uninsured damage to my house in 2019. That hurt, still does actually. Side note, for lots of people flood insurance is a waste of money.
If I could pick any year? 1989, heading into my senior year of HS. That was a fun year, and college was even better. It would be better still if I could have the wisdom of a 48 year old and make a couple better decisions!
@MorseLewis - I went to graduate school at the University of Iowa and was coming from the SF Bay Area. (This was a long time ago, though!) For me, there were obviously no direct flights to Cedar Rapids airport (30 minutes from airport to Iowa City) from SF. I usually connected through St. Louis, and some of these planes were puddle jumpers (small regional commuting jets).
That’s correct - it’s about an hour and half from Des Moines. I assume they most likely have shuttles set up at peak time because anyone not from the midwest would be flying.
Who out there wanted UW Madison to go TO? They’ve waived needing a test but only through 12/30 so you have to apply before then! They are trying to get a longer term waiver from the board of regents but that’s how it stands right now.
@homerdog – Re: Wisconsin – me, me, me! Tks for the heads up!
I wonder if it’ll be like Pitt which went TO for Arts & Sciences but not engineering. Engineering schools are, as my H says, “results oriented,” lol. Will check it out!
Silly question, but how do you quote part of another post to respond?
@NJWrestlingmom, as far as I know, it’s Maine and Massachusetts who have the 14-day quarantine restriction. But as we all know, the end of August may as well be a year from now. A lot can change- hopefully for the better!
Also, out of curiosity, do your seniors look at CC? I think it would keep D up at night! It may or may not do that to me, lol.
