Congrats to your D! Art at Compass Prep appears to think this is the real deal, so I think your D is safely a qualifier. Mine also qualified – it was fun news for our family, too. Nice to have some good news right now.
Congratulations to all the NMS!
Anyone read this article? Hamilton, Colorado College and others gave up the numbers and behind the scenes movement on this year’s Covid class. Thoughts? That last comment by a VP of enrollment regarding Class of 2021-
“But something tells me the next one is going to be another fasten-your-seatbelt roller coaster ride.”
Here’s to hoping we all like roller coasters
@amsunshine thank you! Congratulations to your child as well.
@Aguadecoco thank you!
Yes Congratulations to all the NMS!!!
Yes, congratulations! So wonderful to have some good news right now.
Who here has been to College of Wooster? Or knows much about it? Playing around and still looking for a few safeties.

My thoughts are that this info from these particular schools shows that our kids aren’t at a disadvantage in admissions. At least for these schools, they saw some melt over the summer and ended up with the class sizes they pretty much expected or maybe a little less. They didn’t have to fill in with waitlist kids. It will be different for each college but I really think, for the vast majority of schools, it will be actually easier to get in this year. Colleges will be scared that they won’t make their numbers.
Ugh…listening to our BOE meeting…in person instruction pushed backed to October 3. ?
Had an interesting “Coffee with the Head of Admissions” webinar this morning and CU Boulder (a “safer” school for S). He was asked a lot of hard questions and was good about answering. They only had 2-3x the usual deferrals and he said they would likely admit the same 2021s and have the same size “pie” with next year’s freshman taking up more space than next year’s sophomores. This implies I guess that they ended up with a smaller class 2020 and didn’t fill it all in with the waitlist.
Unfortunately, he also said not everyone EA will know until February 1st, and regulars until April 1st if they got in. If this is going on other places, we potentially will have to submit all of the regular apps before we get news on the EA. Seems that they are not giving more time to submit EA, but taking more time to decide EA. That kind of stinks.
I asked if they would accept a Fall test score after the common app was submitted TO, and he said they didn’t really want everybody doing this, but you could call your assigned AO and that person could add it. Originally, he said you could appeal with test score info if you don’t like their answer but then I guess he reconsidered. From his comments, I didn’t get the impression that he understood just how many kids have had testing difficulties. Also, they have just now gone test optional (really sounded like test blind) for merit.
In other news, ugh - just talked to our GC and she is having significant difficulty with setting up or school’s Fall ACT. Apparently ACT is based in Iowa, which had a natural disaster and some ACT employees can’t get to work. She can’t get something done and can’t get a live person on the phone no matter how hard she tries. She said she would keep trying but it seems like ACT is imploding.
Our Northern NJ school district sent emails today, still going hybrid, D has in-class learning Tue/Fri and remote the other 3 days. Football, cheer, soccer, tennis are still on for the Fall. Volleyball was moved to March start. I would assume for scheduling purposes other schools in our area are doing the same. Fingers crossed that we are able to get a month or 2 before it implodes again.
@homerdog - I have been to Wooster several times, mostly for tennis camps. Lovely campus. About 1-1/4 hours away from Cleveland Hopkins airport, and 45 minutes away from Akron. Rural, but there is a downtown with some shops (candy, coffee, bookstore, restaurants, etc). A friend from work graduated from there and ended up getting her Master’s from Harvard (MPH), so it prepared her well. I know another young woman who graduated from there with a Psych degree, probably 3 years ago. She enjoyed her time there. It is known for having a required senior thesis. I’m sorry I don’t have more information to share. One random bit of information - apparently David Bowie’s son went there and Bowie used to walk around campus unrecognized! Oh - one other item - I do know a professor there and he enjoys teaching there very much.
@homerdog Wooster is an appealing LAC - roughly in the same tier as Dickinson or Denison. When my D17 applied, merit scholarships of about 50% COA were offered and they offered nonbinding EA so she had an acceptance and scholarship offer in hand by December, which was great! As @carlson2 mentioned, the revitalized downtown is pleasant and the campus is very pretty - lots of uniform stone buildings with mature landscaping. The senior thesis is a big deal and a source of pride for the students. Faculty are very accessible and supportive. There’s a modest amount of Greek life.
Based on what I remember of your daughter from your other thread, I think she might prefer Denison over Wooster. But both are worth a look.
We visited College of Wooster during my daughter’s college search. From my notes:
Pros:
Very pretty campus that feels larger than the school is while also being easy to get around
Engaged, hands-on teaching from impressive faculty
Pretty diverse campus with over 20% being domestic students of color, another 20% being international. Split between men/women on campus is close to 50/50
Good merit offered, up to $39k a year (merit scholarships can be stacked - do offer performance merit for both music and dance)
Cons:
We were told a story about homecoming game changing from a football to a cricket at the last minute due to scheduling difficulties. Great if you like cricket, not so great if you are looking for traditional rah-rah
Pretty small departments, not as much depth/breadth as some other colleges like Denison.
Not a particularly strong school for dance (I think that was/is important to your daughter)
Greek life is local only, no national greek fraternities/sororities.
Limited dining options (only 1 dining hall, couple other small “grab and go” cafes around the campus)
Feels very rural when driving to it. Wooster is a (small) city, but it is in the middle of nowhere Ohio.
Wasn’t clear what the social scene was/would be. Not a lot going on in town for college age students, I think you would have to be content with the campus offerings for social stuff.
Could go either way:
The IS program (Independent Study). Every student completes year-long independent research project their senior year. There is also a smaller (semester long) Junior year IS project to be completed as well.
The fairly structured common core requirements. If you want to explore, the common core would push you to do so…if you want to jump right into studying specific majors - probably not the right school.
School pretty liberal leaning, town and surrounding area extremely conservative. A lot of “Trump 2020” signs up when we visited early winter 2019 on the car ride through that area of Ohio.
Test scores needed for credit or placement in AP are fairly high (need 4 or 5 for placement or elective credit).
Can bring a car as a freshman; basically need a car to do any shopping easily if you need to get to the Walmart shopping district north of campus (several miles away).
@homerdog – I don’t have a lot of specifics on Wooster. A neighbor’s kid goes there and he’s pretty granola, but that’s a sample size of one.
My D’s really good friend visited Wooster and it was a safety for her. Got an early write acceptance and good merit $$. She visited and liked the academic bent there, but as soon as she got into some other places, it fell off the list. I wish I remember more of her feedback but I don’t. I can say she ended up at Swarthmore (double grandparent legacy) so she gravitated toward serious type places and Wooster fit that mode.
My gut reaction is that Dension would be a better safety than Wooster for your D.
Did you guys look at Franklin & Marshall? It’s a little bigger for an LAC (like Richmond). I don’t know it well, but seems to attract more ‘mainstream’ kids like your D?
@homerdog several others have already chipped in with great details about Wooster, so I’m not going to repeat those - just wanted to add that I don’t see the social scene as a fit for your D. I believe the teaching/academics would work, but I don’t believe she’d feel the fit there so much outside of the classroom. I don’t think it’s at all similar to Wake, Richmond, Colgate, etc. in that regard. (We visited - did a two day open house and met a lot of administration, faculty, local folks, and students). We liked it, and my S21 is applying, so this is not a knock on Wooster at all - I just don’t think it is similar to the schools your D has liked. (The only other school we got to visit was Denison, and as @mamaedefamilia noted, I’d expect Denison would be preferred by your D). Having been to the two-day open house (and one or two online sessions), I may be able to answer other specific questions if you have them.
@NateandAllisMom – I’m sorry about the ACT travails for getting a test at your school! Ugh.
Re: Boulder – my S just got a nice brochure from them and his eyes lit up! I wonder if he’ll pursue. I think he’s pretty set with his current list.
Also, Virginia Tech doesn’t give out decisions on ‘early’ action until March! Not early at all!
@AlmostThere2018 The word around here has been to not take your student to visit Boulder unless you want them to go there! One step on campus and kids are sold. We have a lot of neighbors whose kids preferred it to the usual Big Ten safeties - Iowa, Indiana, etc! Definitely pricier though.
Thanks to so many for the Wooster info!
NCAA announced that they are dropping the test requirement for eligibility for D1 and D2 athletes who will play sports in 2021/2022
Agreeing with what everyone has said about Wooster – my kid went through athletic recruiting there and we spent a lot of time on campus, with coaches, team and others. Lovely campus, Science Library (the original library, I believe) is drop-dead gorgeous. Greek life unaffiliated with nationals. The senior year independent research project is a major cultural centerpiece to campus life. Student body Midwest " nice," though leans much more quirky, nerdy, than the other schools at the top of your list. Charming few-block stretch downtown which could be a stand-in for very hip part of Brooklyn. Student population seems to draw more heavily from Ohio and Midwest than other “top” Ohio LACs. Middle of Ohio, hour from Cleveland and hour and a half from Columbus.
@AlmostThere2018 luckily we went there last summer. It’s pretty amazing. It makes the California publics look very dated and run down in comparison. The city of Boulder was extremely nice too, had me calling it Pleasantville. A huge plus for us that there is a direct flight to Denver from our regional airport too. They do have Google and other tech offices right in Boulder as well.
