@srwcmw I hope your D’s SAT goes on as planned! We are also in CT and S21’s test location went on the cancelation list today. So frustrating.
She could ask her current teacher, that’s a good idea. I also like the idea of reaching out to the department(s) at the schools to which she is applying. Maybe she will do both. Thank you.
It probably really doesn’t matter @amsunshine - I’d take whatever fits better in her schedule or has a better professor at the CC. For people who have to take both, many people recommend Linear Algebra first as it’s helpful for Differential Equations, but many engineers go straight into DiffEq as Linear Algebra isn’t required (myself included).
Thanks so much - that is helpful!
I have a question about scheduling – if anyone is up to it. My D21 is planning on majoring in Computer Science or Software Engineering. She’s been taking dual enrollment math classes at our local cc, and next semester, she has a choice of taking either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations. Any ideas about which would be more beneficial to take for someone going into one of her major areas? I’ve looked at course sequences, and I see both courses on course progressions. I guess I’m wondering if it would be better to take one before the other? This is out of my depth.
Well, typically, “Calc 3” is MV Calc and “Calc 4” is Diff Eq.
I’m not a math guru, but older D attends UMich (STEM, but not a CS or Engineering major) and took MV Calc, Diff Eq. and then Linear Algebra, in that order. However, Diff Eq and Linear Algebra can be taken in ANY order at UMich.
From my understanding, from my D’s UMich math advisor, is that CS students can take either class or both (depends on the school’s requirements). I think most CS/Engineering students will take Diff Eq., which builds on MV Calc.
At UMich, there are two different classes for Linear Algebra. One is application (CS/Engineering) oriented with no or few proofs. The other is for math majors and is almost entirely LONG proofs.
So, in a long-winded way, I’d say for your D, who will be a CS or Engineering major, I think she should take Diff Eq. But a CC course in either subject may not be given credit at whatever university your D attends, so your D quite possibly would have to repeat it again.
My D had taken MV Calc in HS based upon the same course given at Cal (Berkeley), received an A, but UMich wanted her to take MV Calc again at UMich. But not sure about a DE course taught at a CC.
Maybe someone else can check-in here and give you another opinion.
@Aguadecoco - my D16 was 17 when she started college. There was no additional paperwork needed for her. She flew to campus and was a signed user on my credit card (which had her name on it).
It is sounding that Diff Q is the way to go after MV for engineers. That was my sequence when I was a (short lived) engineering major. S19 is math major. Took MV as a senior in high school and Bowdoin placed him in Linear Algebra for his first freshman math class. It was indeed all long proofs. It’s required for the major where Diff Q is not.
My D18 is a math minor – Linear Algebra is required and Diff. Equations is not. The CS students at her LAC all take Linear Algebra as a required course.
Oh my goodness, it’s sounding more and more like D21 should contact the department at her favorite school(s) and ask for a recommendation or two from them. Thanks for all the responses!
D21’s SAT for this weekend was cancelled. We never got an email from College Board. The test just disappeared from her MY SAT registration list and a refund appeared in my bank account. If CB can do all of that, why can’t they send a freakin’ email to confirm?
Thank you @carlson2. Was your D able to get medical care if needed at school without any issues? Someone once also mentioned that I would need to sign something for S21 to be able to come and go off campus, but I don’t know how accurate that is.
Sorry about all of the SAT cancellations. Our high school is a site for the Sept test. When I asked our guidance dept director if they are having the test, she said she’s having a hard time getting enough proctors. The usual suspects (subs, retired teachers) don’t want to do it and she needs more than usual because they have to spread the kids out more. She will have to either cancel it or allow fewer kids. She has no idea how CB decides which kids get cut if she lowers the number the school can take.
Like many of you, we are on the fence about whether to care about this. D hasn’t studied since March. Our school says that they will decide next week about Sept and will stick with that decision so I guess she could start studying again. Maybe one of you would like to ask her to study? I’m not doing it.

So sorry your S’s test center was cancelled. It is so frustrating!
We haven’t heard from CB about S’s canceled test yet either. Although he did get an email from them yesterday reminding him to print out his admission ticket. S was actually relieved it was canceled - he hasn’t been studying for it and I think he is just over it at this point. His friends are scheduled to take it at our high school (he wasn’t able to get a seat there) so I hope that one still happens for their sake.
Thank you! I am very happy to hear this!
Yes, the Compass Prep numbers were taken straight from the National Merit website before they pulled the site down. Art Sawyer (who runs Compass Prep) is THE go-to guy for NMSF numbers, so you can trust him. So, unless the original National Merit SI’s were wrong (which seems REALLY unlikely!), your kid is ‘in’ if Art says s/he is.
I saw the numbers on the National Merit website myself two nights ago while it was up briefly, and at least for my state, Art’s SI agrees with what National Merit had published. (Having said that, of course I won’t completely exhale until we get the official notification from D21’s school counselor.)
@anaray yes they were copied straight from NMSC website by Art.
Thank you! I am very happy to hear this!
@Aguadecoco - I waived the insurance required by the school (I have great insurance through work), but my daughter did use the health clinic on campus at her college to get a strep test her first semester as a first year student. Her age was not a detriment to receiving care, nor did I have to step in to help her obtain care.
D21’s September ACT was also just cancelled. She cannot change locations because ACT shows she is already registered for 9/12, 9/13 and 9/19. She was only registered for 9/19. So ACT is still a complete mess.
Sorry to all who have also received cancellations, and best of luck to all those testing on Saturday!
@Aguadecoco
My D was 17 freshman year. There was one form I had to sign during check-in (I don’t remember what it was!). She was able to get medical services, but when they sent her to the hospital (it wasn’t serious, fortunately), the doctors there called me to get my permission to treat her, and also called me with updates. The only other thing was I tried to keep track of any off campus things she did (like rockclimbing and trampoline places) as those usually require parental waivers for minors.
And yes, she also was an authorized user on one of my credit cards. You have to be 18 to get your own. She is the only one who uses that one, so it is easy to track her expenses, and she pays it from her funds. As an aside, she used virtually no cash. Just cc and venmo.
She didn’t end up getting a job during the year, but if she had, there were some extra hoops to jump through as a minor.
Hope that helps!
Well September 19 ACT test got cancelled despite our school having in school instruction 4 days a week. Really don’t understand. She did get a new test site about 30 miles away. Actually it may work out better as she has a softball tournament that weekend that is much closer to the new test location then her HS. Just have to roll with the flow.
As to the drinking and drugs in college, both of my girls have said to us that we would be shocked at all Drinking and drugs that goes on in HS and we don’t realize how lucky we that they have both refrained from getting involved. Funny but I don’t think they know how lucky we in fact do feel that haven’t gotten involved in any of that.
