BTW, D21 received a letter from U New Mexico stating that D would receive an OOS scholarship that would reduce her OOS tuition from $24,500 to in-state prices, about $8,900/year IIRC. No essay or test score needed. Just apply before 12/1. Did anyone else receive such an offer?
@homerdog Say you pay a deposit at a school by May 1st, than a waitlist school send you an acceptance and you have not visited, could you pay another deposit visit the school when it is convenient and then choose which school you would like to withdraw from? Knowing that you will the deposit money will be lost but having more time to figure out which is the best option? I am sure the colleges do not want this to happen but is it possible?
So, do you think that state schools that typically reserve a set percentage of spots for out-of-state students might change the proportion to accommodate more demand from instate students, or stay the course and hold the in-state/OOS proportions steady ? Or actually increase the amount of OOS acceptances to make up for fewer foreign-student applicants? if the latter happens, I wonder if state schools would then become more competitive for in-state students and less-competitive than before for OOS students, who may be sending fewer applications.
@shushiritto, an in-school SAT here, too, tomorrow (and a second set of scores coming Friday…then I think D will be done). Glad your D will finally get a chance after so much waiting. Is there any definite way to find out when these in-school scores will be released or does it happen when it happens?
@AOP1925 S21 just applied to his 3 EA schools (including Northeastern). At the end of each submission on the Common Application is a checklist of items that you must check off in order to submit each app, which includes an understanding that you will not put down a deposit on more than one school unless it is due to a waitlist situation. I guess what you are describing IS a waitlist situation, so maybe it’s OK? I think there could be a lot of movement this year, maybe well into the summer. Since S21 is applying to only a few schools and only one is a reach, we probably won’t have too much drama around here. I guess I can live vicariously through all of you…
I think some state schools may try to make up the loss of international students with out of state students to help the budget short falls. It might be a bit less competitive for out of state students and more competitive for in state this year. I do not know if more people in state are going to apply to flagship schools. There may be some students that would have applied to the state flagship but need to stay home and choose CC or other option instead.
I think the second school gives you just a few days to tell the first school. You can’t be double deposited. I don’t know how long the overlap would be. Maybe just one day? Anyone know? Have a student who deposited somewhere and then got off a waitlist and decided to go there instead?
That assumes students are willing and able to travel to an OOS school. And afford it. I’m assuming that there may a portion of seniors, greater than typical, staying closer to home. And universities may be forced to add instate kids. A sample of one, but D21 doesn’t want to travel outside the state of CA at this time.
It’s generally considered unethical to double deposit (please don’t come at me with the many easy-to-make arguments that colleges aren’t ethical or transparent, etc.).
With that said, I don’t foresee colleges assessing penalties for double depositing…but they can withdraw their offer if they find out you are double deposited. Of course you will lose any deposits (to hold the spot, for housing, etc.) at the school that’s ultimately turned down. And deposits are increasing…some schools were at $750 this year, and I expect some will be at $1K this year.
For now, have your student participate in virtual sessions and try to learn as much as they can about each school they are applying to. Summer visits aren’t all that great anyway…typically fewer students around, no classes to sit in on, etc. It’s possible to choose a school without visiting. Thousands of students do it every year.
@Mwfan1921 My D21 is a recruited athlete to a D3. She has received assurance that she will be admitted and strongly implied merit as well. Coach is pushing for ED while our comfort level is EA. I spoke with someone in admissions yesterday and she said that if the financials don’t work for us we can opt out. Don’t know if this is unusual as I thought ED was binding.
We received that email also - in fact, twice today. I think it’s the WUE Plus program. UNM is my alma mater, but I haven’t seen it a more than a decade. They have (or used to have) a very strong nuclear engineering program, what with Sandia National Labs and Los Alamos National Labs in town or a short drive away.
@sushiritto Does CB show your date of school based SAT on its website? I’m just curious as my son is also registered for a school based one on oct 27th but I don’t find this registration on his CB account. Just want to make sure
Generally schools have a total number they can comfortably enroll and they’re looking for a certain amount of tuition revenue from those students. OOS and foreign students pay more, so they’re integral in hitting the tuition number. It’s very likely that schools will look to enroll the same number of OOS and foreign students even if they have to lower the standards a smidge. Just a smidge though.
The CB site does mention the 10/14/20 under “SAT school day” with “most scores” being released on 11/4/20.
The 10/27/20 make up “SAT school day,” but I’m not sure how a test taken on 10/27 can be scored and released by the same 11/4 test score release date. I know a test can be scored, probably in seconds, but we’re talking about the CB.
@sushiritto i meant to ask if it shows that your child is registered on that day on CB website, like we usually book the CB SATs. Since this one we booked thro school, it doesn’t show that my son is registered for oct 27. The only confirmation I have is from APTS company that we made the payment thro his school.
Hi parents, my son is finally getting progress in for his ED. He’s almost there with the essays but the college and program he’s applying to requires about 6 supplemental essays. Luckily, his UC essays are applicable to some of the supplementals
I have access to his account to double check the entries and was hoping you could help me with the transcript and LOR section.
(1) Transcript—do we order the official one from school and manually upload it or does the counselor uploads it? One Q&A says that but then I think there’s a section where the student uploads.
(2) LORs. My son has sent out requests for ED university. For the subsequent ones, he will use the same teachers and counselor. Do the school staff get multiple requests each time my son applies to a different college? He sent them an email to remind them about the 11/1 ED deadline.
@MommaLue – Great to see your son is almost done with his ED app!
I suggest you reach out to your S’s guidance counselor at his high school. Every school has different processes for requesting and sending transcripts and LORs. At my S’s school, he does it through Naviance which is ‘matched’ to my S’s common app.
I can say colleges want both the LORs and official transcript to come directly to them – I’ve not heard of manually uploading them.
