@havenoidea My kids’ school is fully online. Right now they are saying maybe (based on local trends) they will switch to hybrid in Jan at the start of the 2nd semester. I’m not holding my breath.
An effort is growing to get the board to at least commit to an outdoors, in-person graduation for our seniors, which last year’s seniors did not get.
@scotiagal I’m also in northern NJ and our school is still hybrid. 2 in-3 home, Sports has been going week to week with limited capacity (parents of teams, cheer, band) at home games. Can’t go to away games. The athletic directors have done a great job with schedules, changes on the fly (one opponent had positive players) to fill game slots. D is currently in a student ambassador zoom meeting with the 7-8 graders answering all of the questions ect…Internship is also hybrid, 2 days in office, 2 days home. Works in local fitness center and thats been open since labor day with no issues thus far. Love the fact that there is a big sense of normalcy and social interaction.
I’m also Northern NJ and we’re in school every other day (A/B cohorts based on alphabet). Sports have been uninterrupted and I’ve been attending both home and away games, though you do need tickets. I would say we’re about as “normal” as can be given the circumstances.
D24’s public school here is 100% online and there is a huge stink about the proposed hybrid plan for January, which is a terrible plan with 3-5 days of independent learning and lots of other issues. We have beautiful weather and the district bought tents but doesn’t seem to have any sort of plan to do things outside. It’s a big mess and other schools and districts our size have started back so some parents are really getting angry. D21 just went back in person this week at Catholic school.
@EconPop yes. I believe you can click on the dot and get to the webpage for that school for current information. They also seem to be preparing to track for spring 2020. I’m just trying to get an idea of where D21 might be able to go at least hybrid if things are similar next year. There’s quite a split overall among colleges on how they handled it this year.
Our local public high schools are fully online here (special Ed and pre-k through 2nd grade have been phased In hybrid). There are rumors of hybrid high school starting sometime in November, but equal input saying that is unlikely. I think having enough busses for adequate distancing is an issue, even with fewer students needing rides on any given day. The county just can’t afford to buy a bunch of busses. Also, Covid numbers are starting to tick upwards at a faster rate than before so I don’t know how realistic it is to think the school will open anytime soon.
Good news here, finally…SAT math score up 50 points from last week and 70 points since her December test. ERW down some, but superscored she looks pretty solid for her range of schools. Even though the superscore is still very uneven, it’s not ridiculously lopsided now. There’s still another score to come in but I really don’t care about it…she can feel good sending what she has now. It’s not a score that will practically guarantee admissions to her ED or reachier schools but she has a great chance to get into something she will be excited about.
My two daughters are both in 100% online for high school and middle school. Other cities in the state vary from 100% in person to hybrid to 100% online.
I just traveled to Ohio and it was strange to see multiple football games being played. As far as I can tell, there are no in person school activities taking place in my area of NC. I was so surprised to see a football game being played under Friday night lights, I circled the stadium twice as if I had never seen it before.
Haven’t been on in a while… Our school district opens for in person Monday but only 15% of D’s school elected to go back. We are staying virtual for the next 6 week period.
D21 has submitted 5 applications so far from the Common App. And I know she’s accepted to one school because I got an email as “Congratulations on D’s acceptance!” This weekend is portal set up and Apply Texas and maybe a few more apps that have SAQs.
Our Washington state school district is fully online with no sports or in-person extracurriculars. The district had planned to bring back kindergarten and special needs kids next week, but cases are rising, so they postponed that plan.
D21 has seen way too many people from her school on social media completely flouting Covid guidelines. She says she has no intention of going back in person at all this year. Period.
D19 is doing her Emory distance classes from College Station, where she’s rooming with a friend who owns a condo there and who attends TAMU. D19’s been shocked that so many people are ignoring guidelines. I subscribed to the online Bryan-College Station newspaper until last week. From the photos that were published, people seemed to be living in the Before Times.
We’re 100% online until at least mid-Jan. Who knows after that. A month ago I would have expected we’d go to hybrid for 2nd semester, but now with numbers climbing I really don’t know. I really hope the youngest grades go back at least.
Congrats to all those getting those apps in!
My S has submitted two but has SIX more due by Nov. 1. He’s had a busy week with some big tests, but I’m hopeful he’ll get at least two more submitted this weekend. We had set up a schedule where he should have only had four left to submit by now, but he’s blown past some deadlines. I’m trying to take a step back and not nag him – I know he’s fully aware of what he needs to do. At least he has three more weekends between now and Nov 1!
Good news is after Nov 1 he just has one more EA deadline and then may throw in a couple big RD reaches due early Jan. His process is very front loaded compared to my D18 who only applied 2 places EA and then something like 8 RD.
I’m looking forward to him being able to catch his breath after Nov 1!
Life got busy for a few days - glad to have a chance to come back and read through everyone’s progress (and their kids’ progress!).
Congrats to all those who have kids with acceptances in hand! That must feel so good! Congrats to all those whose submissions are underway. Congrats to those whose kids are about to get started. Congrats to everyone for getting through these crazy times!
D21’s friend got the peer recommendation done and mailed to U of Roch in time. That recommendation is not due until Jan according to U of Rochester’s website, but (I mentioned this earlier in this thread) D21 got an email at the end of a September saying they preferred to have it within two weeks(???). Still don’t get why unless this is a test of demonstrated interest. D21 visited pre-COVID, interviewed, has attended a couple of virtual events, and emailed with admissions folks…so I don’t get what more they could want. Except a peer rec two and a half months early?? Well whatever, it is done. D21 really likes the school so wanted to comply with their wishes (it is a great school). She is taking her friend, who is very busy with her own applications and schoolwork, out to a socially distanced outside dinner to thank her for jumping on this quickly for her.
She has her last Common App application to submit - her ED2 choice, which she will submit as RD and then change to ED2 via email if she does not get into her first choice (the admissions officer said this would be okay). Honestly, four schools were all her top choices and she very much likes all the other colleges on her (long) list, so if she gets into at least three (so she feels like she has a nice choice) then she will consider it all a win.
She has decided to go ahead with the UC applications since she can use other supplemental essays for the UC app essays. There’s a combined info session tomorrow for out of state applicants that encompasses all the UC schools - she will attend that to get a better feel. This will be the only application that to me does not make sense in terms of fit as all the UCs are massive and she prefers small colleges. But she has agreed to pay most of the application fee and it is her time and her life, and she does have this one friend that keeps gushing about UCSB. Also, I think this helps her as she waits for decisions from other colleges. She likes to feel like she has something to do so she feels more in control. I think January and February are going to be very difficult for her emotionally if she does not get into her ED school. There will be nothing left for her to do in terms of applications and she will want it all to be over already. She did apply to a safety and a match EA, so hopefully she’ll get acceptances from one of them in December and she can then spend Jan and Feb a bit more relaxed.
The crazy train that is 2020 just keeps chugging along. My D21 was finally supposed to move to hybrid learning this Monday. The district delayed the start because they don’t have enough proctors to be in the classrooms. This is because a large percentage of our teachers are teaching remotely via a screen to the kids sitting in class. The seniors will not start any in school hybrid days (2 days per week) until November 2. The freshman started this week. According to the superintendents weekly email there were zero cases of COVID in the school this week. The kicker is now our county is above the rolling average deemed safe for hybrid school so the governor may choose to shut it down next week. I doubt my D21 will set foot in the school before 2021 if ever again.
On the positive side she is ready to push send on her CA. She has 1 ED school and 5 EA. We are meeting Sunday for me to review for any typos and then she will be done. Her GC loaded the recs and her letter. My D21 already sent her ACT score and the transcripts to her schools. She got an acceptance this week to her rolling safety so she knows she is ‘going’ to college next year??
Sad about high school, but so fantastic about the college apps, @whyboydanny. I’m so impressed by “Our” kids of this thread, doing so well in these trying circumstances!
I agree, @inthegarden ! The perseverance and flexibility is impressive. Way to go, 21’s and parents!
Also, @inthegarden , congrats to your D on raising her math score! She should be proud of herself:smile:
D21’s math score unfortunately went down (she took August and October). I think it was just hard for her to get back in a studying routine once school started. She’s happy with her August score, though. ERW is 75% for her reaches, and math is either just barely squeaking into 50% or right in the middle of 50%. We’re leaning toward sending the score because it honestly does reflect who she is as a student. Honors and AP for humanities, regents for math/science.
We went back to one of her top schools last weekend, and she decided no for ED to that one. Tour guide was great, weather was beautiful, but she said her gut still says maybe.
We’re headed to University of Richmond tomorrow because she hasn’t seen that school, and she felt like she needed to before making a overall decision on ED. We can only do a self-guided walking tour, but then she will have been to her top 4 schools, and if she still isn’t feeling sure RD & EA will be it for her.
I felt like we had fully moved on from this and then last week this was in the body of an email from UMich:
“*If you have not taken the SAT or ACT or are unable to, or do not have other scores to submit, you should use the COVID-19 question on the application to explain. You can self-report your test results on your application OR have them submitted electronically directly from the testing agency.”
Hey, but it’s the year of Covid and everything is just nuts.
