@NateandAllisMom we should all have a collective glass of wine when all the apps are in! Will be very happy when this process is over. Then there’s the process for my D23, but she will be easier.
S has submitted four apps, has one acceptance with merit. Still needs to do an honors essay, plus essay for Boulder, and UW application. There were a couple of surprise essay questions once we got into the Coalition App. I just wish he would do the honors and Boulder essays already! Every time I see him watching a show on his ipad, I just want to say “why are you doing this now? can’t you just finish your applications, then do it?” I am good about saying nothing most of the time, but once in awhile I can’t help myself and have to ask. The response I get is is irritation. All I’m trying to prevent is the last minute, browser froze, didn’t submit something and now it’s past the deadline. S thinks he is a lot of time, but he doesn’t for 11/15 and 11/16 applications. Then has the UCs, though he tells me he is almost done with those.
Looks like one of his LOR has been submitted to the schools, so that’s a relief. The other LOR is pending, but I am sure this teacher will do it soon. Only thing left is for his transcripts to be sent. We order them through Naviance, then pay for them separately through the school website. I guess the school counselor sends the transcripts? I sent an email to her on Thursday asking about the status of transcripts, but haven’t heard back. Ordered ACT scores last weekend, so there should be time for those to arrive. Seems like so many moving parts.
My D has finally caught college fever and moving like a bulldozer. (CA and CA essay is 95% polished!) Her procrastination has suddenly flipped to nagging ME (mom, you said you’d read over this and tell me what you think an HOUR ago! Mom, haven’t you signed that ED agreement YET?)
I finally signed the ED agreement. That was a big thing to let sink in. I wouldn’t do it until she had the CA essay and supplement to a certain point, and I had to grill her a million times, playing devil’s advocate about the school. I love the school…but I wanted to make sure SHE was all there with it. She was troubled for a day or so about an Instagram account with some not-all-good-news about an aspect of the school, but while we decided there’s probably some truth in it, we doubt it dominates school culture and probably it’s something many/most schools she’s looking at are grappling with…a work in progress. We had not heard anything about this In Fisk, Princeton Review or CC …if anything, the opposite, and D decided the positives seem to greatly outweigh this possible issue, She is not going to be deterred.
She decided to throw in an EA honors app to our flagship (supplement is easy) and will also apply EA to Richmond IF she gets that supplement done. If she does, fine, if not, fine, I love some things about UR but not sure it’s for her. She’s choosing between two schools for ED2 and 4-6 RDs (only half have supplements) but plenty of time to worry about that later. Nothing has been completed and sent, but ED/EA’s shaping up. And to think three days ago I envisioned it would come down to a last-day panic.
You are all making me feel better on D’s slow progress! She has a bunch of 11/1 deadlines and a few 11/15. She got home from school a little while ago and I thought I would mention working on at least one essay tonight. Then she told me she has work tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday! I had asked her to request only one or two nights for the next few weeks but I guess she forgot. She goes to work a little bit after school then comes home again about 8:30, doesn’t leave her much time for essays once she gets her regular homework done.
Today she followed up with one teacher about her rec letter and she said D is next on the list. Her other teacher did not respond to an email last week and now D is getting super nervous! D has not seen the teacher so far this year and with Covid it’s not like she is allowed to just go wander around to look for her. I think she will have to go to the office tomorrow and see if they can track her down. I don’t think any of her schools require two teacher letters but I always thought it was best to send two.
Her boss wrote her a recommendation (a few schools on her list allow “extra” letters) and he sent it to her this morning. It is very complimentary, the owners love her, but looks more like a letter you would write for a job recommendation - very straight and to the point, no fluff in there. I’m guessing he has never had to write a college rec letter before, he is from another country and just opened the restaurant last year. It was so nice of him to say yes and to let her see it, he even asked if she wanted him to change anything.
@nanosec I am not sure how UGA will get through all of the applications I am guessing there may be a lot more deferrals.
On another not, D21 tried to send her ACT scores this weekend and was not able to log in to her account. I spent 4 hours today (2 on hold and 2 with customer service) before I was disconnected. Her data is not migrating to there new platform. I tried calling back but they are not accepting calls due to high call volume. Anyone else had this type of issue?
@momtogkc, I’m sure the job (and the supervisor rec that comes with it) will look great on her application, even if it causes some delays getting it all finished!
Hi everybody, so interesting to read about everyone’s progress updates and looming deadlines - nice to know we are not alone! I’m thrilled to report that DS21 just completed his Barrett Honors College application after having been accepted to ASU - go Sun Devils! This was his first acceptance and we are super relieved: he is going to college!
That said, I’m beyond proud of him that he has an interview with his #1 choice this week. It’s very exciting that he is moving forward in the process because we both think it would be a perfect fit for him, both for football as well as for his career plans. He’s already interviewed with the football coach but this is his first alumni interview. Fingers are crossed!
@123Mom123 It depends on the college. Some allow scores to be self-reported, some don’t. Need to check each one; go to their application checklist on the admissions website.
@evergreen5 Thank you. I just checked first school he’s applying to; Brown - and they don’t require official reports for SAT or ACT. Whew.
Now to find out if they require official AP scores to be sent. (I’m looking but so far don’t see the answer.)
Anyone know about AP scores??
I’m awake now. This has jolted me!
Edited to add: Just double checked S21’s hs transcripts. All testing is included in it including ACT, and AP scores. (It even includes his 6th-8th grade grades and attendance!)
Question: for those schools who say it’s okay to self-report is anyone choosing to STILL send an official score report as well anyhow??? Just to be safe???
S21 isn’t applying to any schools with a 11/1 deadline. He has already applied to TAMU and UT, he is auto admit. He is still working on that common app essay and I can’t say anything because I am met with “Mom, I have a ton of time to apply”
My S21 still hasn’t submitted anything. But he asked me to sit down with him tonight to help with some questions on an app for a college that doesn’t use the Common App. At the same time I’ll make him do the final two CA edits I suggested when I proofed it and then actually submit to UDel. Last I heard he’s still trying to figure out what to write for UVAs 2nd supplement.
I was wondering… For those of you who have gone through this process before, are you finding that your HS Senior’s classmates are applying to WAY more schools this year compared to prior years?
My daughter is applying to 8 schools, and her friends are applying to 13-20 schools. Am I missing something?
My S21 applied to 16 and my D18 applied to 15 so not much of a change for us. A few were free or low cost applications.
I can say my D18 didn’t have a chance to see most of her schools until accepted and that was pre-covid. I personally feel the larger amount gives you a wide variety of packages to consider. She decided on a school that was very low on her list when we started. Her merit aid package “forced” a visit and ultimately played a large part in her final decision.
We are hoping for a similar situation for S21. I would rather him have a choice of schools with merit than only a few because of reach applications. With covid we also felt a need to apply to a lot more closer to home. Who knows what 2021 will bring?
Hope that makes sense.
@H0llyw00d I definitely think it’s a regional thing…in our North Texas neck of the woods, it’s the norm to stay instate…most everyone applies to the same 5-6 schools…or else OU & Univ of Arkansas…few and far between go to the east/west coasts or up North.
