Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

I understand, and your explanation makes sense. When my son applied, he chose 13 schools. When he was admitted to some of the schools, his lack of excitement made me question why he applied in the first place. If I’d known he wasn’t really going to consider enrolling at these schools, I would have had him skip it to free a spot for someone else. I had him withdraw his application immediately in the hopes someone else would have the opportunity to get in. My D21 is only applying to schools that she will seriously consider. With COVID, there is so much that is unknown, but if she refuses to go to a school even if they throw money at her, she can go to a local college for a year or two and transfer.

I hope for a better world for these kids by the time they start this next chapter.

Unfortunately, certain majors should not be started at community college. It will take more than 4 years to graduate.

I never said they applied to schools they didn’t consider attending just that COA does come into play for most of us in the end. We researched the schools before applying and all have their perks and reasons he would want to attend there.
The same went for my D18. She thought she wanted a southern school and the offer made her reconsider. Our wallet is about $100,000 happier that she did.

can you give examples of certain majors that should not be started in community college? My ex H who is an MD and I who am a NP both started in community college. Around here lots of local kids start in CC then transfer to the local state university, including premed, pre nursing, engineering, business.

Yes! Thank you - your post made my D21 feel better that it isn’t just her. It says she is migrated to the new platform and then it won’t let her log in. Very frustrating. She just needs to download her score report and send it to a school - she is wishing she had downloaded it when she originally got her scores. I can’t believe you got disconnected after all that time - I am so sorry for you!! They really are quite a mess over there. I hope you get it worked out - please keep us updated.

How I know that we’re in the thick of things right now: D21 received 16 pieces of mail today - almost all were fancy mailings (i.e., books, big envelopes, etc.). Only 1 postcard.

Having ACT score report ordering troubles. Sent CS a msg for assistance but could be 24 hour response time.

Am trying to order two score dates (one had the writing essay, the other didn’t, so I’m wanting to send both a 2019 and a 2020 score report to multiple schools).

But…the darn shopping cart won’t let me choose BOTH tests. It just keeps showing shopping cart with whichever test date I last clicked on.

What am I doing wrong?

Making slow progress here… two more submitted yesterday but the remaining ones all have short answer questions, some multiple. Dropped one school from the list - Pitt is awesome but far from us and no friends or family nearby in case of emergency. So it came off. Still waiting for HS transcripts to be submitted. But accepted to Arizona with merit so she’s going somewhere!

8 submitted, 2 pending, 3 acceptances in hand
pressure is off, senioritis kicking in (remote/hybrid facilitates it)

Email CEO Janet Godwin (really): Janet.Godwin@act.org

Try emptying your cart, then sign out, and sign back in.

Then, just order and send the tests, one at a time. But, check to see if schools you are applying accept self-reported scores, so you can save $.

Save your money, no reason to send the official report if the school accepts self-reported scores. Many schools will require the official score report upon matriculation though.

@Mwfan1921 - Thank you!!! I will try that. (Wish they would improve their website and shopping cart to show more specifics and not just list the recipient schools, but also the test date. But that would be too easy, right?)

Yes, my own fault for failing to do this earlier or have S do this part, hahaha.

Progress today! S21 got applications in for U of Delaware and Miami U. Miami was a bit of an impulse add. I’d suggested he look at it because it has a lot of similarities to UVA but he’s much more likely to get in. Since it didn’t have any supplements he went ahead and applied. He’ll do 3-4 more – UVA, VT, JMU and maybe U of Richmond – for a total of 5-6.

Congrats to all making progress, submitting, and or accepted! We too have finally made progress here. 5 Applications in yesterday and 4 more to go by Nov. 1. These 4 all have short answers but they should be easy for my D to knock out. (I hope). I think she feels a bit relieved to have the bulk in, but still a few to go. After those get submitted then it will be onto the stress of getting accepted.

If a school says it is okay to self-report then I would trust them on that. That being said, I sent in official score reports to back up the self-reports, but that is because D21 is a homeschooler, and some colleges really want the official verification from homeschoolers even if they say self-report.

@JanieWalker - Thanks! We ended up sending official reports “just in case” (iow, b/c both S and H wanted me to, lol!). I couldn’t believe I neglected to do this. I’ve had my head in the sand more as applications get closer. Not a good direction.

UF President Fuchs (pronounced Fox) - announced that current applications for F21 are down 23%. He cited inconsistent standard scores (UF did not drop required SAT/ACT scores from admissions) and students choosing to attend closer to home as reason.

Well, we have an interesting situation. At first, D21 was going to take physics at the community college this year. The day before the first class started, we were notified that the hybrid situation called for her to have a three-hour live web class followed immediately by an hour live lab each week. We live an hour away from the college and there was nowhere for her to be on the computer for three hours close enough to the college so she could then run into the building for the lab (COVID-19 made it impossible for her to, say, be in the college library for her class…her dad did not want that for COVID-19 reasons). So she switched to AP Physics 1 online. That class did not start until the last week of September. Right after it started, the assignments-due schedule was extremely difficult to fit in with her five other classes that had already been in progress since late August. She therefore quickly switched to an Honors Physics class that lets her work completely at her own pace, which means she can choose her own due dates as long as she finishes the first semester by late December and the second semester by late April. So now every waking second she is not busy with her other classes, she is immersed in this physics course so she can complete everything in time for first and second semester. And the course changes required notices to all the college admissions officers since her original application states she is taking the college physics classes. I will also make a note of all this on the Optional and Midyear Reports as her counselor (homeschooling mom). As if these poor admissions officers aren’t getting enough reading material from our family (transcripts from eight million places, 40-page course descriptions document, etc etc etc).

So so so glad D21 got nearly everything for her college apps done over the summer because there is no way at all she could focus on applications now. She is swamped.

@JanieWalker - Oh my! She does sound positively swamped. Thankfully, she was so productive and on the ball this summer. Wise young lady. (And a pat on the back to you, too, Mom!)

@123Mom123 I checked each site and all allowed self report for ACT/SAT, but none mentioned APs or subject tests. But, since the schools get the CA, and all this is listed, I don’t see why they wouldn’t accept self reported AP/Subject test scores. Are other people sending these in?

@mamaedefamilia S did tour Duke, with 2 current juniors (1 a S of H’s friend from Duke, who married another friend from Duke!). He loved the campus, and the kids, who he said were “normal, funny and smart” despite being in a frat. They said they have lots of friends who aren’t in frats and the frat wasn’t a huge part of their social life. S also liked how in first yr engineering, they do real projects for companies, which helps people decide whether they like engineering. So, he thinks he’s EDing there, but I keep thinking, why can’t Duke have the residential system like Rice? There is no perfect school!

Common app question. You can submit without the LOCs, correct? Our teachers are taking forever to upload.

@havenoidea For D19 we self reported AP scores on the Common App, we didn’t have to send any official scores until she chose her school and then she knew which classes would give her credit. For D21 I don’t think we are reporting any AP scores even though she has passed most of them, I feel like there are too many 3’s that don’t balance out the better scores. I don’t know if that is a good idea or not, it’s probably my biggest question other than decided which schools to go test optional.

@NateandAllisMom Most schools say you can submit without the rec letters but you need to check when they are due. I know for UNC the EA application was due Oct. 15 but the letters could be submitted any time before Nov. 1. I need to go check our schools too because one teacher has not even responded to D this year! :open_mouth:
