@inthegarden what a lovely acknowledgement of such a special day!
@inthegarden How lovely!
@inthegarden - thank you for sharing such a lovely family celebration and experience.
Orlando Sentinel posted that UCF (Orlando) is down 21% and FSU (Tallahassee) is down 32% in their respective applications compared to a year ago.
That is beautiful, @inthegarden .
Add UF is down 23% and then compare it to UGA which is up 25% and we can see the impact of test optional.
@inthegarden I love this so much! What a special day!!!
@inthegarden What a beautiful and thoughtful tradition! Thank you for sharing this. So nice to read something uplifting during these stressful times. Today is my husbandās birthday and I made him his favorite dish/dessert from growing up. His mother passed away a few years ago and I am proud to honor her in this small way.
To the group: S21 plans to only submit 5 apps. He is in one already, two more are pretty much safeties, one is a match, and one is a reach. Since he likes the one he is in already and really likes his safety (maybe as much as his reach), he doesnāt see the point in adding more schools. It is different for each child, though. D17 applied to 10 and got into 8 (only two were true safeties though).
Many engineering and business programs start with coursework specific to the degree in their freshman year. Our local CC has very few courses that would transfer for engineering. NP, MD and teaching are some examples that can often be started at a CC. They need to do their research or they may wind up with lots of elective credits that are non-transferable to private or OOS. I wish he could start at our CC it would be free.
So, reading this thread reminded me that D21 needed to send her SAT scores to her ED school. She only has two scores, and one is higher in both math and ERW, so she chose that one and paid to have it sent.
Then, she got an email from College Board which says:
College or Program
William & Mary
August 29, 2020 SAT
But then it says:
āOn your student score report youāll see scores from all the tests youāve taken. If you want to send only certain scores, check out Score Choiceā¢.ā
She is freaking out because she DID use Score Choice, but now she thinks both scores will be on this report. I figure itās a good sign that the August date was in the email and the September date was not. Maybe the āstudent score reportā is not the one that goes to the college.
Why would CB send such an unclear email? Are they trying to stress these kids out?
I think the key is communicating not only with the local CC but also the target state schools for finishing the degree. Our local CC has a very attractive program that makes it very inexpensive for county residents to attend 2 years. And, the students often are successful in transferring to schools of choice. However, I have heard many stories of students thinking they would graduate from the state school with their major of choice after another 2 years, and it ends up taking 2.5-3 because they had incomplete information or made assumptions.
I spoke with ACT about this as I had the same problem. They told me you couldnāt order two dates at one time, but you can send a single exam to multiple institutions in one transaction. I did that today and it worked. Good luck!
@H0llyw00d - Cheers! Yes, thank you for thinking of me and my dilemma. I finally ended up trying that last night and found success. ?
Horrible website design for ordering though, right?! So inefficient!!!
Each day seems to bring another thing to think about it seems!! ?
I could use a little advice from this group. My daughter received her ACT score, and her Composite is the same as a prior test, the distribution of scores varied. We need to decide which score report to send to a college that does not super score for a student applying as a Psych major.
Composite: identical score for (Feb/Oct)
Math: identical score (Feb/Oct)
English: 3 point difference (Feb higher than Oct)
Reading: 4 point difference (Feb higher than Oct)
Science: 6 point difference (Oct higher than Feb) - she totally missed the mark on this oneā¦
Our thinking is to send the Feb score as a potential Psych major even though Science/Stem was much lower but would love some input from anyone willing to give their opinion.
TIA!
@JanieWalker Hugs to you as you support your D!
@inthegarden I love your storyāthank you for sharing! It brightened my day.
@mamaedefamilia & @havenoidea : Just FYIāDuke is great (if it fits your student) and has some (rare ) non-need based merit such as the AB Duke scholarship and others, but no application is necessary. The Robertson is not really a Duke scholarshipārather it is a joint scholars program w UNC-CH, so a candidate would have to really love both school environments, and they are fairly different schools.
The Morehead-Cain is not affiliated with Dukeāit is a UNC scholarship, for which you cannot apply but instead are nominated by your school. For our 2021s, that process is already well underway at both in and out of state high schools.
@inthegarden what a wonderful tradition and a heartwarming story. I love that you honor her heritage with special gifts. Feeling all the feels!
@3SailAway On the student score report on the CB website, you can see all your scores. However, by using Score Choice you can choose to send only certain scores. You need to uncheck those scores you do not want to send. After the order has been processed, you can check on CB to see which scores were actually sent. If you click on the specific score, thereās a spot where you can choose to see which schools received that particular score.
Hope Iām being clear with my explanation above and didnāt accidentally make things more confusing.
@2devils You are right, my bad! I had been researching UNC and Duke simultaneously and misremembered the details. Thanks for the providing the correct information.
Thank you, @JanieWalker ! D21 has gone to bed, but I was still worrying.
So, we think she did use Score Choice. She said she checked August and did not check September. What spooked her was getting the email right after she ordered the score saying that all scores appear on the report, and letting her know that she can use Score Choice if she only wants one score sent. Why would they send that email to someone who just used score choice?
Weāll have to wait until it is processed to make sure it worked. But from what you said, she did it right!
