Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@havenoidea Edx has some classes, they’re free unless you want a certificate…

https://www.edx.org/course/ap-microeconomics

https://www.wsj.com/articles/college-admissions-season-was-already-stressful-pandemic-made-it-chaotic-11604917801 Number of applications so far slides 8%, with tally of applicants down even more, causing uncertainty for schools. This article is free to read without a subscription at this time.

@NateandAllisMom Thanks! (nevermind, I got it to open on my phone)
8% fewer apps
10% fewer applicants
Too many schools on student’s lists
FAFSA students down 16%, even lower among students of color and high-poverty high schools
16% decline in Common App fee waiver requests
Apps at Tulane and U Washington up slightly
DU (U Denver) up 5% overall but early apps down; yield more uncertain

S is in the too many schools camp.

I just read this morning another article on the FL schools apps being down. I wonder if they will back off on the test requirements?

“And the 12 universities in the State University System of Florida are seeing losses in applications for the fall that are up to 50 percent of last year’s totals,”

https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2020/11/09/applications-floridas-public-universities-are-down-much-50-percent?utm_source=Inside+Higher+Ed&utm_campaign=d0163eacb9-AdmissionsInsider_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1fcbc04421-d0163eacb9-236510854&mc_cid=d0163eacb9&mc_eid=20c5f7b513

I always think I am a “in the middle” parent - not too hands on, but not too hands off - well appears my dreams tell me differently !!! (and my kids may put me more in the hands on category). Woke up last night after dreaming I saw the notes from the AO on my daughter’s ED app and they were all negative and I ripped off her notes page! My husband laughs at my practical dreams - maybe one day I will be that person that dreams of flying or walking the streets of Paris eating a crepe and drinking wine

Got a freebie from Siena, why not

S just got into Temple Engineering today so now he has at least 2 schools to choose from (Temple and Pitt Engineering). He likes them both, which is a bonus. Love those EA schools! No email yet, so tell your kids to check their portals today if they applied and not wait for an email.

@momandslp Congrats to your S!!! My S also got into Temple and Pitt. Nice to know there will be choices.

@sparkleybarkley I saw your S received a great scholarship from Pitt! D17 also received a good scholarship from Pitt with similar stats as your S. Not expecting anything for my S but since we’re in-state, both schools are completely affordable. Congrats to your S!

“Re: students applying to too many schools, that is a hedge against the uncertainty of where they will get in.” Yes, in our case also a hedge against Fall 2021 Covid situation and past handling at our target schools.

Seton Hall acceptance with $22k per year, test optional?

Sadly we lost our school’s former boys basket ball coach today from Covid. He was 36 y/o. He had resigned earlier in the semester. Leaves behind a wife and 2 young daughters. Bittersweet day, such good news on vaccine front but heartbreak here in our town

@TVBingeWatcher2 I’m so sorry for your loss. I will keep your family and your community in my thoughts.

@TVBingeWatcher2 I’m so sorry for this loss.

@TVBingeWatcher2, just awful, I’m so very sorry for your loss.

@TVBingeWatcher2 I’m so sorry to hear this. My D21’s best friend’s dad died of covid last month and they were the darkest days of the pandemic so far. It’s such a shock when someone young dies suddenly and unexpectedly, and the stress of the pandemic makes it exponentially worse. I’m sorry for your loss.

@TVBingeWatcher2 I’m so sorry for your community’s loss. He was so young and his poor family.

Thank you to the parent who posted the WSJ stats. I saw the 8% down but don’t have a subscription to read the full article. I wonder if ED apps are also down. I told my son and he said, “So you’re saying I have a chance with Brown ED.” LOL.

He’s filling out his UC apps. Thankfully, it’s one app and set of essays for all the UCs. With the ones he’s selected, it’s $420 in app fees. He’s not sure on the major (aspires to be a doctor) with UC. He feels that he has to balance interesting major with one that also meets 95/5 med school requirements. And the UCs use a different course label for each school. Biology series at UCLA is different from UCSD, yet the same series req’d for med school. Sheesh.

Even though they won’t be considering ACT/SAT, there is a spot for tests. I told him maybe, just maybe a 36 ACT could get flagged. Wishful thinking, I know. But what a shame to work so hard to take it last Dec only to have it not really matter.

He is getting anxious because other kids have gotten interviews already from MIT and Stanford. Told him Brown isn’t doing interviews so not to worry. I think he will be happy once the UC apps are doing this weekend so that he can go back and focus on the other reach schools. He really wants to go out of state and I feel like he’s just pushing through with UC even though the essays have been solid and having worked on them first, they helped his ED essays.

@TVBingeWatcher2 So sorry to hear this sad news. Healing thought to his family, your community, and you.

S’s school is going back to fully virtual learning starting next week now that area Covid infection rates are rising again. At least they got through the first quarter of school. Probably a smart move overall.
