Parents of the HS Class of 2022

S16 took AP World History in sophomore year (the first of 4 APs he would eventually take). Not sure what D22 will do. Still a little early, but we may discuss it over the holidays.

They don’t release the schedule until much later, but S22’s soph schedule is set in stone. No room for electives until senior year. Next year he will take Sacraments, English III (H), Algebra II (H), APUSH, Latin III (H), Spanish III (H) and Fine Arts. Fine Arts is a semester course, and then I think he will have a free period the second semester. It would normally be PE but he will get out of that for playing a varsity sport.

@vistajay Taking on the mighty AP US History! I’ve read (on here mostly) about how much reading that course is. Good for him taking it head on.

My S has no intention of taking on APUSH, based on how it is handled at his school. Way to go @vistajay !

Thanks @sfSTEM and @OrangeFish . APUSH is traditionally a soph level class at S22’s school, and is usually the first really hard course encountered by these kids. It was the last “B” his older brother got in HS, though that teacher has since retired. It should be a bit of a shock to him, which is good.

Anyone else’s kid take the Oct 2019 PSAT 8/9? Just looked at S22’s scores and I think he did well, but they score each of these tests so differently. I just wish they got to take the junior year PSAT, both for practice and to compare apples to apples. He got 1290 out of 1440 (99%).

Yes @vistajay - S22 took the PSAT 8/9 and scored 640 and 640. At least it is easy to remember!

That’s a great score, @OrangeFish !

If anyone’s kids are interested in pursuing scientific research with a faculty member at a university local to you, PM me, and I can help you with that. This could be an original project the student has envisioned and wants to pursue, or just that they want to participate in an existing project with a faculty member. The reason I am putting this here is that such projects take years to develop, and interested students should start early in HS (or before). The reason I am putting this up now is because January is the first month to start a project to be entered into the 2020 Intel ISEF pipeline. PM me an we can work something out!

Exam week everybody? My S22’s first taste of end-of-semester exams. Good wake-up call. You can’t cover an entire semester in just two hours’ studying time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Western Civ and Spanish II today. The big one, Biology, is tomorrow. S22 is upstairs studying now, LOL.

@vistajay Biology is one my son’s big ones too. Wednesday for him.

We’re in the midst of That Delightful Thing in high school – group project reports and presentations. >:) Three of those this week.

@OrangeFish S22 had a project presentation today, for his Engineering class. He and a couple other boys built some mods for the Nintendo 3DS gaming system. Hey, I’d have liked a project like that back in my day.

For today’s group project, S22 had to write a poem in a group, and then present their poem, along with the logic behind their poem.

I’m sure he would have been happier with a Nintendo 3DS project.

Would love to learn about the local research for D22. Not sure I cam PM you, as I believe one needs to have many post before they can PM. Can you contact me please?

Also not sure I managed to reply to a particular post…

Apologize for the multiple posts. Just learning how to reply and don’t have PM function yet.

It’s D22’s first week of HS finals (and group projects / presentations). 3 down, 3 more to go. I think my job is to make sure she’s got plenty of snacks, and to stay out of her way. Lol. Good luck to all!

My D22 has midterms this week, two down, 4 more to go. Then comes a nice 2 week break before the start of the second semester. All of her grades are currently A’s and barring any massive bombs, they will be A’s when she is done. Looking forward to spending time with her, husband, D15 & S18 and getting extra sleep.
