My son has new student orientation Aug 13, first day of class Aug 16. About a month left in the summer for him.
My daughter has a two day conference for the CAR (Children of the American Revolution) and a week long choir camp. While she’s doing that, I’m vacationing in Italy for two and a half weeks! She is a WEB (mentor to 7th graders) leader at school, so goes for orientation on August 22 & 23. Then goes back with the 7th graders on Aug 28. Her official first day of classes is August 29. Her middle school is grades 7,8,9. So she’s not in the actual high school till 10th grade.
D22 had a great time at her biotech camp. The things she mention most:
- How interesting it was to have fellow students from around the world- Sweden, China, Singapore, Japan, and more.
- How it was great attending classes where everyone was completely interested and engaged with the topic.
@Collegecue I just read your recent posts on the Class of 2017 thread. Glad your DS17 is so happy at Kentucky. I also have a HS Class of 2017 child (who was less happy with her college but has come around to liking it) and a HS class of 2022 child. My only 2. Do you have other children?
This is my first post, but I have been reading a bit. My oldest is going into 9th this year. We have 2 more following him for class of 2024 and 2026. I have a lot to learn!
Son returned home last Friday from CTY camp in Seattle. Next couple weeks are dedicated to finishing up an English assignment due the first day of high school. A series of questions related to a summer reading. He chose The Boys Who Challenged Hitler.
Well, D22 now has 3 days of High School behind her. She did get all the classes she wanted but some of her friends did not. So far so good. Fingers crossed.
I haven’t been back here for a couple months and am shocked to see the thread on page 8! 
Sounds like lots of interesting summers in progress and even the start of the high school experience for some!
My D22 did a church camp, and has done a fair amount of hiking and mountain races this summer. I have been working hard to get this highly socially motivated kid off her phone and into the great outdoors, which has meant going outside my comfort zone to organize group events for her large friend network. It was a successful endeavor until the kids started coupling up (as they will do) and then breaking up with drama (as they also will do). Will be interesting to see how these friendships play out with high school starting shortly!
As I mentioned in my intro post, I mostly homeschooled high school for my older two, and am already becoming keenly aware of the increased complication in trying to set out a particular program of studies within the constraints of the availability of courses in the public system. She does have a schedule for fall, and it will hopefully be fine. She is very smart, but, as previously stated, socially motivated and not particularly competitive, for better or worse. Her older sisters were/are at selective schools, but this is unlikely to be her course, which is fine.
I had hoped to identify an area of community service that would be of interest to her, ideally something she could do throughout high school, but so far the endeavor has been without success. It’s tough to find something she is willing to do without a close friend tagging along.
The high school academic year is a couple weeks off, but sports practices did start. I thought she would be doing football cheer, but she ended up on the cross country team! I am pleased, as I have never been crazy about cheer as a sport (the danger, the clothing, and the dance moves are unappealing to me, but she has done comp cheer for the last few years.) She really likes it so far.
Hello, I have a DD22 and a DD24 and happy to take this 4 year journey with you! Both kids are into STEM and attend a small traditional school.
Still some time left for summer here. D22 waited until August 1 to start her required reading for English. She was afraid she would forget too much for any tests on it if she started earlier. She has tons of notes. She also started reviewing French on duolingo and opening some review books for APWH and honors Chemistry and Geometry. Just to get a little head start. It makes me smile because her way of dealing with a bit of nervousness is to be super organized and start teaching herself stuff. My own way at her age (ok, probably still) was to just procrastinate and hope the work would be easier than it sounded and then donit all the day before.
@mom2twogirls My S22 is more like you (and I) were when we were in high school. I commend your daughter working to get ahead.
Hi all! I posted once earlier on and then took a break for summer. Kids don’t start back until after Labor Day, but sports try-outs were this past week and D22 made the field hockey team as the starting JV Goalie (as well as the Varsity goalie’s back-up) so she’s back to the grind and will be practicing everyday for 2+hours a day. She likes the girls on the team and is so excited! Schedules haven’t officially come out, but social media has leaked a hack so she found out her classes and I think knows someone in every class. She’s excited for high school, which I’m so happy about, middle school definitely had it’s ups and downs but because of them I think she’s ready and is looking forward to some new friends.
S22 has book day Wednesday then regular classes next Monday. Cross country practice has been going on at 6am in the morning 5 days a week since early June, so he is in excellent shape! Club soccer started this past week (3 practices a week, ugh!). He showed a keen interest in piano this summer so we upgraded from his brother’s keyboard to a digital piano and got him lessons that will continue during the school year. He wants voice lessons (we will see). The school theatre choreographer wants him to attend Saturday dance lessons, but he has no free Saturdays for the next 3 weeks. Oh and the drama teacher decided to do a musical in the fall AND spring, with auditions in 2 weeks. Going to be a crazy time. Neither the cross country coach, soccer coach nor theatre director will be completely happy with his practice attendance, but they are just going to have to take what they can get.
Hello! D22 doesn’t start until after Labor day, but like @redfraggle she made Field Hockey and has a new, great group of friends- many sophomores who are filling her in on the school. She has put off a lot of her summer AP Human Geo assignment, so it’s crunch time. They said it’s 10 hours of work, but it will be at least 20. My other child, D21, goes to a magnet HS in a very small program and knows exactly what she wants to do (Doctor of Physical Therapy). D22 will be at our local HS with 2200+ kids and is a typical, living in the moment 13 year old. Can’t wait to see how HS unfolds!
My DD22 is starting a new school not in our town this fall and pre-season soccer tryouts starts this Monday. She knows a fair number of the girls (single gender school) from rowing crew this and last summer. Here’s hoping for a smooth transition for her. It will awful for us as we have to drive her there. But I guess that’s what parents do for their kids right??
Sympathize with you! My kids go to a far away schools all their school years, and while it is worth it, is challenging for them and parents.
First day of high school is in the books! S22’s school has an A/B block system, so four 80-minute classes each day… Adjustment thus far is good. Early feedback: (1) “Pizza here is really good.” (2) “Cross country practice is much harder than any running I’ve ever done.”
My dd just finished her marching band camp. It started last Saturday for freshmen only, then Monday to Friday 7.30am-5.00pm, culminating today with a family picnic and concert. It’s a top program and it shows. They are amazing!
She got all the classes she had requested but won’t know her actual schedule until the day before the first day of school, which is this coming Wednesday. We’ll see if she has any classes with anyone she knows.
She has the next 4 days planned out to maximize time with friends.
