Thank you. I agree that it’s a good thing to both dream and deal with disappointment. I told her that if she doesn’t face disappointment that perhaps she didn’t stretch herself enough, and in the end she will end up where she belongs. D20 did not get into her ED school, but she ended up in the place where she was meant to be and has had the most amazing experiences there. Hopefully D24 will also end up in the best place for her whether that is “the dream school” or a school she just hasn’t dreamed about yet.
What I’ve learned is - what kids think on paper up front and what actually happens after visiting - are sometimes very different.
And preferences change because of that.
oh, and make sure you eat the food - always eat the food!!! Food is an underrated metric as I’ve learned - two kids who said the food stinks, didn’t eat, were always down in the dumps - it was low blood sugar. Get something in them - they perked right up.
I think that’s one thing many families should sample but don’t.
Congrats to your student on having a favorite and finally telling mom!!!
Best of luck to her in her ED. And if it doesn’t happen, it’s awesome she has others at the ready that she’d love - that’s a fantastic situation to be in!!
I’ve been hanging around these boards for past year or so and thought my daughter’s list was locked. She wanted small ish 5000-7000 kids and we had a great, well researched list of 8 schools that we toured. Now she “might” want a rah rah big football university, none of which we have toured. So a bit of a scramble here. Lesson learned, best laid plans and all that…
Has she found any of those type schools to add to her list? Those are pretty much the ONLY type on S24’s list
What about CU Boulder- not all the way across the country coming from Oregon but big football/school spirit. S24 almost exclusively looking in the south, but added CU Boulder since it is a popular school at his high school and checks most of his boxes other than “no snow”
Well, at least you have a great in-state option!
Right now she’s got Michigan as high reach, Maryland as reach, and Indiana safety. Looking at UConn too. She won’t do Oregon, Utah, uw, cu or Utah because they are “too much like home”. Grrrr. We looked at smaller schools in PA, DC, VT and others and now
The cuse is rah rah and she was there…the Dome is horrible for football though.
For her desires, IU might be the best of the three. Many will say UM - and you could argue (at huge expense) but I would go to Hamilton Lugar over UMD straight up.
So many go by rank or by selectivity - and yes, UMD is a much much much harder admit although they’ve taken Poli Sci off of the limited enrollment platform - but in her desires, IU punches far above its safety status…IMHO.
That was our impression - our daughter was into both - although chose neither but would have easily chosen IU over UMD. And she’s very liberal. It’s got a strong rep where we live so maybe that adds to it. But it’s cold - and that was something that she didn’t want in the end.
@OregonMom2024 My daughter won’t do U of O either. It bums me out as I think she could get some great merit there. Oh well. My older daughter loved Maryland. We did a couple of history day competitions there. She was accepted but decided on somewhere else. Good luck with the new schools
Can you filter for ED on naviance?
We are in the exact same situation with my S24! At first I was so taken aback I resisted but now I see how excited my son is about his plan and I really think he is making great choices!
We had the same problem, with the opposite predisposition. D24 thought her schools could be really big, no problem. We aren’t a football family, and she’s never been inside that culture. Fast forward to our tour of our SEC state school. It was enough of a fish-out-of-water feeling for her that we added another 2000-student school option to the 13-long list (there was only one of them before).
Great feedback, thanks! She wants to throw a moonshot at Michigan but I think she could be happy at IU. We applied to both last week so hope to hear from IU by thanksgiving . UIUC might work too though I haven’t researched their poli sci.
Yes, I agree on trying the food being important! I think spending time in the student center/dining hall always yields great information that you don’t get on a tour as well!
I’m also happy that D24 told us about her true feelings even if a bit scary, and even more happy that she will be very happy at one of her safeties!
If you’re interested in UConn, you should attend their October 28th open house. They have a well thought out format that has break out sessions by different majors, interests, etc.
Seems very organized.
Does anyone here has kids applied EA to Case Western? S24 submitted his application in September and hasn’t got the email about application portal yet.
3 years ago yes. That does not sound right - your student should contact admissions and ask.
Yeah, he emailed the AO today to ask.
The good news: S24 submitted applications to three colleges today!
The bad news: a few minutes lates, Indiana advised him of its supplemental essay.
Enjoy the confetti while it lasts!
That’s interesting. My son submitted Common App to Indiana a few weeks ago and didn’t get anything about a supplemental essay. I just double checked the portal and there’s nothing there. He applied to Kelley.
I just found out D24 is starting a new personal statement. She felt her original one had strayed too far from her intent, after changing it after the feedback she received. She says she has an idea for the new one, but hasn’t started it yet. And she has 3 EA apps due 11/1, which is less than 3 weeks away . She seems not bothered by any of it, so I’m trying not to be.
