I love this idea, but I just use his login, ha!!!
Two years ago UVA deferred +4000 students, of which 80 were accepted.
That is crazy. I mean I can see deferring a few hundred kids that look great but you arenât 100% sold, but 4,000 - and then to accept 80 of them. Ridiculous. It doesnât give kids the chance to move on â unless deferral numbers are small with a meaningful chance of eventual admission (obviously not a guarantee but, at a minimum not less than the regular RD pool) it is better for everyone to rip the bandaid off sooner.
The new policy is great but doesnât change the fact that EA comes out âby Feb 15thâ which is absolutely useless for the student.
This reality makes me incensed.
This is awesome, and as discussed upthread, a kindness. Though, sending an early applicant right to the WL seems like a somewhat strange state of affairs. Like I could see them feeling like âoops we shoulda accepted this personâ the first time around. Like you said though, âby Feb 15â is not super helpful in the grand scheme of things.
Just when we thought the list was at its maximum S24 got a fee waiver for a school that was on the fence. Oh well! No supplements and an excellent music teacher. Deadline for ea is nov 1 so hoping the school can get everything in on time. Why not, right???
Wesleyan has been known to waitlist a few ED1 and ED2 applicants rather than defer or reject them. Iâve always found this strange. I wonder if theyâre students who donât need financial aid and might get pulled if Wes uses up its FA budget before selecting their full class.
Could definitely be the case, and makes sense as many need blind schools become need aware during the WL round.
What is the advice regarding submitting optional letters of recommendation from âOther recommendersâ as indicated on the commonapp?
Yeah, there is that. They must have a different definition of âearlyâ than I do.
Iâd be in favor of moving ED to mid October if theyâd let kids know by December 1. As it is, notification date is so close to RD due dates that kids have to do all their essays because there isnât enough time after notification to get them done. At least with a Dec 1 date kids could do fewer up front essays to hedge against rejection. And donât even get me started on some schoolsâ EA - I mean at this point kids are mainly doing it to increase their odds not because theyâll find out much earlier than they would for RD.
1 of the colleges D24 is applying to EA has an EA deadline of 11/1 and if you did an on campus visit and apply by their EA deadline, they get you a decision by 11/15. The other 2 EA schools sheâs applying to have EA deadlines in early December and their âyouâll hear back from us by Xâ date is mid-Jan for one and mid-Feb for another. Thereâs a lot of variation!
I would take this, for sure, though I know it wouldnât sit/sell well from a DEI standpoint.
Agreed though, the system is a mess as is.
where is this post by dean j? canât seem to find itâŠ
It was on instagram. I think one of the last two posts? It wasnât about this specifically, but I confirmed on the website.
thanks!
The AOs I have seen address it seem to share certain common themes:
(1) It is truly optional, if anything they prefer just the required recommendations;
(2) It is usually not helpful to submit optional recommendations from additional teachers, or conventional school-based supervisors like coaches, musical directors, or club advisors;
(3) A recommendation from someone with an important title, relationship to the college, or so on doesnât have any inherent value.
So when, then? Well, if someone really knows you well in a non-school context and can speak to what you were like in that context, then that could be helpful. A close research mentor might be an example. Maybe from a manager for more than a normal summer job. Maybe someone who you worked with extensively in an outside charity. Maybe a clergyperson if that is an important part of your life. But it has to be a particularly meaningful thing, really for both of you.
And again, most people know plenty of people they COULD ask, but shouldnât. This is just really for when there was something big in your life you did outside of school, AND there is some particular person who can really address what you were like, and why you were valued, in that context.
If you are submitting an arts supplement definitely submit a recommendation from your primary teacher in that specialty, especially if there is a long standing relationship or if they are more than an at home teacher.
SoâŠS24 submitted the first of his applications on Wednesday night. And he got an acceptance today!
It isnât quite done, because he has been admitted to the university generally, but is still waiting for admission to the engineering major he applied to, and he also hasnât even started the honors app.
But that was very exciting and encouraging for him!
Awesome!
