Parents of the HS Class of 2024

D24 is getting her braces off today. She’s a happy camper.

S24 got a “you’re admitted!” package today from Kansas State with socks, a confetti party popper, and a nice metal keychain. :purple_heart:  That was unexpected! (The only thing S23 got with his 4 acceptances were a few sheets of stickers.)

After a little slideroom induced panic all of S24s 11/15 deadlines are done!! Now a week to rest before the one for 12/1. Agh!!

D24 is super stressed. She is missing 3 days of school this week all for school related activities. It’s all fun stuff (Leadership conference and State Volleyball tournament) but terrible timing with all the college apps she is still working on and a bunch of school projects/tests. She will have to do a lot of catch-up over Thanksgiving and we are traveling out of state for that. I keep telling her to hang in there- come January she will have a much lighter load.

C24 had their first BFA audition this weekend, and I’m trying really hard not to fret over/read into everything. They fell even more in love with the school, but the reality is very few kids make it into the program so I’m trying to manage their expectations (and mine).

I’m glad they’re applying to a mix of BFA and BA programs, because this auditioning thing is not for the faint of heart!

Yes, my S21 is at a bfa acting program and it was quite the ride. He was accepted to multiple BA programs, some EA and had one early BFA acceptance which helped the stress enormously. Fingers and toes crossed for you and your C, it is quite an experience!

My kiddo did apply ED at a NESCAC school where they were recruited for their sport. At a really large public school that does not provide much in the way of guidance. I have encouraged kiddo to look at essays for other schools they liked but they have not started to do so and are not applying to other schools EA. Do you know if it common to apply EA and/or have other essays ready to go in case the ED school does not pan out for some reason.

Many kids apply early action to some safety schools, often at the same time as the early decision school. The idea is that having one or more acceptances in hand if the ED school is not a success takes off some of the pressure. Often it also reduces or eliminates the number of RD safeties to which the student needs to apply. Some students also plan to apply to a school in the ED2 round if the initial ED1 school does not come through. Typically, that ED2 school would be somewhat less selective than the ED1 school. But it can get tricky in case of a deferral if the student is not prepared to give up their remaining shot at the ED1 school.

That said, as an athletic recruit your kid should have an excellent chance that ED1 will work out, especially if there was an admissions pre-read.

I hope it works out for your child! The advice we were given was to have all apps (EA & RD) ready to go - if not submitted - by ED1 notification deadline in case ED1 didn’t work out. In this scenario, you’re neither writing nor applying with feelings of sadness or rejection.

And this! My kid would be happy to attend any of her 3 EA “Target” schools so having a hopeful acceptance would buffer the rejection, if that’s what happens.

I believe it’s prudent to apply to safeties at the very least and any EA school you usually need to do so for a better shot. As far as having essays ready, it depends on plan B. If it’s Ivies, that is A LOT of essays to write over xmas break (speaking from experience), but many of the NESCACs don’t have significant supplements. At the very least, I would try understand what could be ahead.

I should also add that my kid‘s counselors highly recommend that the kids have some RD applications ready prior to hearing about the ED decision. (Whether the kids actually follow that advice is another question…) Many kids get demoralized by a negative ED outcome and find it hard to refocus on other applications. Also, the holidays are in-between ED notification and RD deadlines, so it can be hard to get counselor input.

S24 has applied to several EA schools, those applications were already due, before his ED choice. He had several that had early scholarship dates that are RD and those are also done already. He will have his RD applications started but not finished when the ED decision is released. Most college counselors and facebook groups do recommend at least one rolling admission school or EA safety or target that results before or at the same time as ED. I have gotten the very good advice here to have the RD applications mostly done because if the ED school does not come through, it may be hard to put full effort into other applications and the deadlinse will be tight (and over winter break)
This is what S24 did
one rolling admission school (already admitted)
4 EA schools,( three safeties one target)
1 ED school (reach)
3 RD schools with early deadlines for scholarship consideration (reach)
5 RD schools that will be partially finished by ED release date to be finished for RD dates if needed(4 reach, one target)

Hope that is helpful!

Some kids also get burned out after the ED/EA stage. S24 was planning on a few RD apps earlier in the fall but has now nixed that plan. He said he’s happy with the colleges he’s applied to and with the ones he has acceptances from (rolling). We are also relieved because we’ll have a stress-free winter break.

I think too many people sleep on this aspect. Like, there’s tons of talk about the general time crunch and crappiness of having to do applications over the holidays from 12/15 to that first Monday in January. But the frame of mind at that time, having just been rejected (or deferred, which is effectively similar because you still have to now apply RD or ED2) is a terrible moment to have to do this work.

Being “ready” (i.e. done) with RD/ED2 apps by 12/15 I think is imperative frankly. Obviously if you have a safety-type acceptance in hand by 12/15 that you’re truly happy with it can change the calculus.

I’d still be ready if at all possible.

Someone pointed this out earlier and it is a great point, get at least a good start on the RD applications, esp the ones that have 100 essays

I completely agree with you.

I am also confident my S24 will appear to agree with us, then disappear and do something else for a couple weeks.

Anyone else still experiencing IDOC problems? I know there was a “glitch” saying things weren’t uploaded when they actually were about a week ago, but it is still showing my 2022 tax returns haven’t been received (uploaded Nov. 2; all other docs show as received; uploaded forms from the tax service directly). Have been on hold for 45 minutes now…wondering if anyone else is still having issues?

Sorry you’re experiencing troubles.

We uploaded IDOCs yesterday about 3:30pm EST successfully.
