You might want to just contact the ticket office and ask if they take checks. The kids can buy their season's tickets online and I'm guessing you can get tickets for the parent's weekend game that way too.

is there extra cost for parents like at the Explore where we were charged $50 each person? I know orientation fee for the students are already added on to the tuition fee.

My D registered for orientation, with me as a guest. I am not doing the overnight (very pricey)as I live within driving distance. Yet the bill added up to $315 (not itemized), a bit surprised, so I'm not sure what costs what.
I do know it costs $245 a night for the parent to stay ($245 for a dorm room!) + maybe meals?, and an extra $100 if you arrive a night earlier.

The charge for attending alone is $150 or $175, + dorm is $225 for a double, or $245 for a single, so effectively they are charging you $70-$95 for a dorm room. Not outlandish for within LA city limits, but certainly not affordable.

D paid $150 +$20(spirit package) for her to attend.

Columbia, she's staying overnight right?
So $170 for a student (include Spirit package),.. we paid $315.
$245 additional. Is this a charge for my D's meals and overnight, and maybe meal charge for me as guest?
I think I need to call..it's not clear.

bmom - For the international students orientation session, there's no added fee. For domestic students and their guests, the fee schedule is here: Welcome to the USC Orientation Programs Website

GroovyG: I think the extra overnight charge is for parents only, but the student overnight is included in the $150.

Sequoia - Are you perhaps including the mandatory orientation fee, which is charged whether you go to the session or not?

it didn't really say if there's charge for guests though.

Thanks rainmama,
$145 for regular orientation.
Does the parent also pay this fee ?
+ 20 for Spirit thing

$145x2+20= $310 (I paid $315) (maybe the Spirit package was $25)

Are any parents going without staying overnight? What was your cost?

Yes she is.

Sequoia, if you paid $315, that would be $145 more than columbia's $170. So not as horrifying, perhaps. But fwiw, the estimated total cost of attending USC is $52,118, including 2 semesters of tuition, books, fees, housing and meal plan, plus travel. I guess the orientation fees are part of that? Is anyone feeling any better? lol.

Yes the orientation fee is part of the COA as I understand, and I can appreciate the costs to USC relating to the organization/ personnel/ meals etc needs.
I was just trying to figure out what the parent was responsible for, but then ofcourse there are info sessions/ meals etc for the parents too. It just wasn't stated on the page. I guess it's $145/person regardless of whether you're a student or parent.

52,118 * (1+ 1.06+1.06^2+1.06^3) = 227,966

Nope, not by a long shot, we have already started stocking up the Ramen noodles.

^I read one young guy became millionaire before the age of 30 by eating ramen noodles for 3 months, that is how frugal he had to be. Hey, It works for him.

Wait... The amount my bank had to verify was 50something. Now it's already 52? Oh, this is starting great... Where did you find that number?

madbean - love your gallows humor!

On the link I posted above, the center column is the charge for the student and the right hand column is the charge for guest/parent. So for Sequoia, you paid $150 for your D, $145 for yourself, $20 for the spirit thing = $315.

I know this discussion has nothing to do with me, but I'm doing my best not to work today :) Thanks for letting me hang around!

raimama, thanks. I must be blind.

awelex, tuition has gone up for 2008-2009, the amount we had the bank verified for is for 2007-2008 fees. Actually, everything has gone up, including room and board and other fees.

rainmama... I think deep down you might be a little bit Trojan? btw, any news on that taboo topic at your house?

awelex, on my s's OASIS "Your 2008-2009 Financial Aid Eligibility" page they list your FA awards and scholarships, if any, and then towards the bottom of th page they list the Estimated Cost of Attendance, and subtract the FA awards and such, and end up with the amount left--which means the amount you must come up with or borrow.

Thanks to everyone for bringing the importance of the parent attending the orientation to my attention. My husband is going to attend. We want to make sure we get all of the info. Plus, since the program ends around 5 PM, my husband wants to make sure that he meets our son at USC rather than flying East so late at night.
