WHat is the point of this thread? Trophies? Or real information?
To show off? To brag? To make others feel bad? The admission process is not a contest. Its a struggle for many, a joy for some, a disappointment for others.

The admission process is like big game hunting, who has the most trophies...it is out of control and with people applying to so many schools, it has morphed the process into something ugly. A person can only go to one school. It appears that it is not to just get into a good school anymore, its a contest to see how many you can get into. Because the schools a student can get into are sooooo different, for many, it has become a game. Not what is the best place for me, but to show off. Play a game. This benefits no one and hurts many. Having safeties, matches, and reaches is all good. But to apply fo rthe sake of applying, has set up this really stressful and bad process and hurts many students.

I know there is pride among the parents, but I just don't understand the point. I think what is important is that people have a place to go. Please help me understnad what this is for. It would be better to say where the student is actually going....have lots of trophies just shows how askew the system has become.

I have to say there is part of me that agrees w/ you citygirlsmom. I think it's most useful to know WHERE someone actually decides to go.

But many of these posters have been communicating with each other in greater degrees of intimacy than the rest of us (sometime posters & lurkers alike), so therefore an eagerness to share all the info on every acceptance.

Perhaps, but the whole process is spinning out of control for many students. "So my kid applied to 15 schools, got into 12, now to pick!!" This has warped the process; the parents, who have more experience, should do something to look at what is going on and say no. You don't need to apply to so many schools....I have heard many say, well I got into such and such, but never really wanted to go there. Why apply?

I have also read many of the parents complain about the system, but we are all part of it and all make it worse. That is what we do.

I see your point, citygirlsmom, but regular posters and lurkers on this board have a pretty good idea of most of these kids' stats, so it's helpful to know which schools accepted them and which didn't, which ones offered merit money and in what amounts, etc.

The close community of regulars on this board feel that they know almost as much about some of these kids as they do their own kids, and it's helpful to have one post to refer to for their acceptances, rather than having to search old threads.

cannot speak for the originator of the thread, but I will respond anyway by saying that the final results of these particular college admissions are retrospectively helpful to those who may have been following earlier history of, efforts, & questions about those searches for these families listed. Not too educational to stay suspended with the questions if the final answers are never forthcoming. And for most of us choosing this as a forum for discussion, we come here mainly to share information -- including I might add, info from those parents with no current college prospects, but who have children currently in college & have recently been through the process. Their feedback is also quite welcome & instructive, & I do not read their D's & S's triumphs as trophy-displays any more than I read this thread as such.

It's interesting that you're focusing on this particular "results" thread, & not on the last 7 months (or more) of enormous time put out by these same parents to comfort the afflicted, guide the confused, congratulate the successes, etc. among the entire CC forum of parents & students. There has been a tremendous outpouring of giving by many parents in this regard.

Yeah, it looks a little like trophy hunting if you don't know these people, but at this time, among this group, it is a form of communication.
Maybe when this thread dies a natural death, after we have communicated, we should start another, listing barebones stats, college attending, type of acceptance at that school (ED,RD or WL) and a brief sentence about what we think put our kiddo over the top, or our general last impression of our child's experience?

irishbird -
many of the kid's haven't decided.

citygirlsmom,
Besides the celebratory elements, this list provides parents of juniors, the juniors themselves, and those of us that will stay next year with a pretty clear picture of successful applications strageties with a range of schools of varying competitiveness.

citygirlsmom:
I couldn't believe that it took 57 entries before someone asked your question. Yikes. What is happening here??

Some part of me does agree with citygirlsmom. Although after communicating with everyone on here for the past two year's I do want to know and celebrate everyone's decisions. Sometimes I do wonder if we parents are fueling the college admissions frenzy.

Don't fully agree with you this time, cangel. We don't really know each other, just the images that we create of ourselves and each other.
Looking at the list, it seems too top-heavy with ivies and other highly ranked and selective schools. There are parents on these boards whose kids are looking at, and working on choosing between, CTCL colleges, good state schools, smaller LACs, etc. Hope they aren't put off by the top-heavy list on this thread.

How do we get them included? Any ideas?

Ohio mom: I know that kids haven't decided yet: i'm saying I'd PREFER a later thread that shows WHERE they enroll.

I still stick with the idea that these posters "know" each other more & their sagas & want to provide ALL the details. As to whether the acceptance information is helpful to others with children applying in the future - I'd say minimally. Next year is a new batch of kids to review - the pool could be deeper, wider, faster, at any of these colleges (esp. if so many kids apply to 15 schools, like citygirlsmom noted)...so who knows how next year's group will be evaluated?!!

And yes, dad of sam, it would be good if others noted their non-top 100 or non-Ivy acceptances, but from my brief (@ 16 month) following of this board, I don't think many of the students going to those schools, or their parents post here.

I would hope that they would share their experience in this admissions process and post their child's admissions because they represent the overwhelming majority of the class of 09 at colleges across the country and much can be learned from them. Hey if you must know, I have gotten pretty dog gone with my writing in colors so there is still plenty of cyber champagne to go around. os jump in- the water's fine.

I have a second son who will go through the college admissions process in two years. His experience will be wholly and completely different from his brother's, and I expect to still post here, listing his "non-top 100 and non-Ivy" acceptances (or, more likely, rejections, based on his current GPA :( ). I have learned SO MUCH the past four months here, and feel certain I'll be able to get the support here that I will need to help my "less traditionally successful" (ahem) son find a place for himself when his time comes.

Also note: there are many, many students on CC discussing schools in that range. It is their parents who are not here posting in the Parents forums.

First, I like having one thread for all updates. Some of us want all the details.

Second, look at some of the lists: instructive that U of Chicago-accepted kid also applied to Allegheny, etc-- a good lesson for top heavy kids not to skip the safer matches and merit money schools.

Maybe it would be helpful if we added our rejections to the list?

I do like seeing the updates and did not read them as bragging, as for so many of these people we have all seen & heard the entire saga of the application process. It is fun to ahve one place to spot all the results.

Those accepted to all stripes of colleges are welcome. Personally, I think state unis, except for UMich and the Cals, are underrepresented. I think the reason, though, is not too many people who post here have kids who are looking primarily in those schools.
I'm in Mootmom's position, I have a son who will be a 9th grader next year, a dear boy (a little whiny, but he's the baby), who I will be thankful to have graduate and be able to choose a college. If he got into Rhodes, I will fall down and kiss the ground, even if we are paying full price - heck, if got into UA Honors, I might supply the forum with REAL champagne! I will not be ashamed to post his results here, either, because it will be quite an accomplishment for him.
I understand how people could be intimidated, but I say don't be! We want to know about everyone, the whole spectrum helps - and, in a short time this thread will die a natural death.
