Cangel: appreciate the offer of free champagne, but the shipping cost of sending a bottle to every member of this forum would probably approach the shipping cost for that Rice dorm!

I think to ask parents not to want to brag about their kids' achievements is like hoping that communism will finally prevail as a way to feed the world well. We all might like the idea of not caring, not wanting the bling of decal fever - at least I do - but am just unable to live up to it. So the big questions is, how to have it and NOT drive everyone who has to live with us nuts?

I might bug the people here, but better that than bug my D or the others around me. In my case there is no question that cc has helped me a)ease off on communicating angst to my D b)as others have said begin to plan for my S who is not the world-beater that my D is. And, by the way whom I absolutely worship and only wish I could still carry in a front-pack and am now way better prepared to support and guide and not compare to my D.

As far as I am concerned .... brag away, if it is indeed bragging. For most, the last years have been stressful. If this helps letting some steam go, so much the better.

Some people enjoy finding out what happened to other members. For the others, there is a powerful tool at your disposal: close the thread and ignore the updates.

And you know what - I really like to see the stories of others' success, having heard what everyone went through on the way. I have a semi-maternal feeling towards these kids - I know others here feel exactly the same way.

This is bandit_tx --- I'll start with the explanations. D was deferred at Yale EA. She was also on confined bedrest for 3 months of the fall of her senior year. Both hurt her confidence and caused her to add some schools. Couple that with the 10% chance for her reaches and 25% chance for her matches, and you end up playing long odds. We have seen a number of excellent students miss at all of their schools. Unfortunately, it now makes sense to apply to many schools if you are aiming at the top two tiers. There is simply no way to be sure ahead of time what an adcom will think of a given student. Look at the Princeton thread. How many 1600/800/800/800 were rejected. I don't think you can legitimately accuse these students of trophy hunting. They are intelligent, they can read, and they can figure the odds. They are simply doing as much as possible to insure their future. It should be instructive to see how it has worked for various students. And she was waitlisted at her safety, Scripps, and we havent heard from Amherst or U Chicago, so most likely rejected. It really is a crapshoot at the top end.

There are parents on these boards whose kids are looking at, and working on choosing between, CTCL colleges, good state schools, smaller LACs, etc. Hope they aren't put off by the top-heavy list on this thread.
How do we get them included? Any ideas?

This is why I posted my grandson's decidedly "run-of-the-mill" schools (UNH and UMe). As anyone who has read about me and him knows, this is a real triumph which I celebrate mentally as I fall asleep each night and which will mean the world to his future. So I posted in celebration of him, but also so that others can see pride in these acceptances also. They may only lurk and not post - who can blame them?

btw, S's schools are great but not HYPS etc. either. There are a sprinkling of us "regular folks" here. Maybe it will grow.

I couldn't get myself on the list, but I am proud as heck of my D's acceptances to Lawrence, Beloit, Allegheny, & two UCs. Nothing too highfalutin there.

jmmom - the love and support you have for your gkid ought to plant a seed for all. With any luck, what we really all share is a sense of our kids' right size place and a joyfulness when they find it.

Alu

Congratulations, SBmom! My daughter and I toured Allegheny, and think highly of it.

thanks firefly!!

Cangel : "If he got into Rhodes, I will fall down and kiss the ground, even if we are paying full price - heck, if got into UA Honors, I might supply the forum with REAL champagne!"

Thanks for making me laugh out loud... too funny!!

I also appreciate both ends of the spectrum. My daughter is a decidedly unenthusiastic student who needed to find a school with a very "applied" bent and alot of flexibility in majors so she could find her calling. Decent SATs scores and a GPA just shy of 3.0. She looked at several Cal State options and eventually settled very happily at Northern Arizona University where she is now majoring (after several false starts) in Parks & Rec Management.

My son is the opposite - very intense student with a true love of learning who also wants to run in college. He applied EA to Stanford and miracle of miracle, he was admitted! He also applied to Princeton (rejected); Columbia (waitlisted); Cornell (admitted), Wash U (admitted) UCLA (admitted), UCSD (admitted), and UC Davis (admitted). He will go to Stanford next year.

But what a different process for him than with my daughter! She was very easygoing and had pretty basic requirements: California or not too far away, a tennis team (she wanted to play tennis, but quit after a year), and a pleasant campus. And my requirements: Public school as I didn't see the academic drive in her to merit a huge investement in her education. In the end, it worked out great - she's been very happy there. I hope my son will be half as happy at Stanford. In the end, that is what is important!

Yes, I will be doing very different things for my son, who is very unacademic minded - although Sunday he decided he wants to learn Japanese?!. He is a personable, patient, empathetic boy who needs to grow up a little. I love him, but I don't understand him.

Cangel,

What is it about these youngins who are less inclined toward academics (S2 in my case) which leans them toward Japanese???? Just about the only thing that IS motivating him right now is that if he gets his grades up to a B overall, he can take Japanese at the local college. Oh well, I'll take anything at this point for a little extra focus!

In our case, it was the more academic of my two sons who wanted to study Japanese. I think it was the anime that got him into it originally. In June he will graduate from college with a B.A. in Japanese language and is looking forward to spending a year--or more--in Japan teaching English or translating. He has already made a few hundred dollars translating for an online company. You just never know where an interest may lead!...and here we always thought (as did he) that he would end up an engineer...

Susantm,

I was going to suggest that anime is probably what is motivating S2. He is really very bright, and I hope will catch fire when he does get to study what moves him the most. What a wonderful journey your son has been on! Good luck to him!

Some time ago, I approached an instructor of Japanese for my S. I mentioned that my S had gotten interested through anime. The instructor laughed and said all his students had come to his class through the same way. That was at Harvard. I don't know whether my S will pursue Japanese in college, though.

Congratulations to all! I'll add mine: Accepted to UNC-Greensboro (Named scholarship, not going), UNC-CH, finaid not yet known, not going, and Tulane, DSA and Honors Program--That's where he's going. we just visited for the honors weekend, and he loved it! Great money, too!

Waitlisted at Carnegie Mellon and UChicago and not admitted at MIT after EA deferral. That was pretty easy on him after the great news from Tulane, where they have his CogSci major.

CTYmomteacher:

Congrats! There are some CC kids at Tulane now, and they seem to really love it there.

Hey CTYmom,
That's awesome! I bet he will love Tulane, and that honors program sounds great. I'm so happy that you and he are happy! :)
