Parents, what is YOUR dream school?

mom of 2 incas...yes, so true.

i thought you had some fixation with peru or something hehe. what a shocker this revelation has been!

momof2incas, the image that your screen name conjures up is one of a kind!! Please don't change it!

Chkr1147 - Have you seen "Big Fish"? That's supposed to be Auburn back in the curfew days - although prior to your time, more like your Mom's time. It is actually Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

Momof2Incas, was I was more of a Gauche than a Gaucho.

No, though if my academics had foundered I would have precipitiously discovered myself to be an American private.

I majored in Political Science.

TheDad, I suppose the bank burning in Isla Vista was a bit before your time?

My dream school: Dartmouth.

How much more quintessential college could you get?

Cangel - I didn't know that about Big Fish! Never had any desire to see that movie, but now it will go on the list!

I listen everyday to PearlJam Benaroya Live and hear Eddie talk about BigFish but never have seen it.
::added to movie list:::::

it wouldn't be Duke. I went to Law School there and loved it, but the undergrads just weren't my cup of tea. Very good question -- I would say maybe UNC-Chapel Hill or, if was looking for a smaller college either Mary Washington, St. Marys (MD), Furman or Elon.

BigFish is a wonderful movie, although the Southern accents make me cringe. The tradition of storytelling and family, now that is very true to life.

Cangel, Big Fish is a gem of a movie. And for me, it was an unexpected gem. (And that's still the best kind.)

Wow - you guys have me convinced - Big fish moves to the top of the list!
(Cangel - know what you mean about some of those movie accents, tho')

I just rented and watched Big Fish last night - what a coincidence. I thought the beginning was bizarre, and husband and I thought we would hate it...but it turned out to be excellent! What a sad movie though, I cried I cried I cried!

I hate Big Fish, I thought it was completely bereft of personalized story

magical realism does not endear me to a movie

I sort of agree, babybird87, with your comments on magic realism in movies, but it's strange that I really like the effect in books quite a bit. Gabriel Garcia Marquez tops my list.

My dream school would be Muhlenberg. When we visited it with my d, I just felt like I belonged. I liked everything about the school the size. location everything. I went to Temple University (along with most of the kids frim my high school). Back then in my school, noone really went away to college. You stayed home, and it was Temple or Penn State.

momof2inca--

I also like Marquez a lot-- my unsurpassed Spanish teacher last year introduced me to him (his work, not the person, haha)

in movies...magical realism doesn't work as well.

I think that is why I thought I would hate Big Fish - I'm not big into the "make believe" aspect...but I thought it worked here.

I can understand BabyBird, my son didn't like it as much. Having lost a parent, there was great meaning. Also, being born and raised in the South, I have known people who told elaborate tall tales (though not as fascinating as his were) that blurred the edges of reality.
I saw another good movie this weekend that has college app connections - "Spanglish", not dark, ("Mystic River" was very strong, I'm just not into dark things, enough sorrow in real life) but not a contrived happy ending - very good movie about assimilation and families - begins, if you can believe it, with adcoms sitting aroung a table reading applications! DD and I almost left!

I don't know if I have a so called "dream school" Definitely would be in NYC. I attended Brooklyn College in the CUNY system, back in '76 if you lived in Brooklyn NY, didn't want to go far away and be in an urban setting that's where you went! It was a great experience, I got married while attending finished my senior year as a newlywed, and then went on to get a Masters degree 14 years later while pregnant with my son who has been accepted ED to Columbia! If I was to do it all over again? I would really want the experience of being away, while being close to home. Missed out on the whole college social experience and dorming. I would love the chance to relive those years at a school like Columbia, Barnard or NYU
Ah! to be young again! (and as wise as I am now!)
