Hey Guys,

Im coming to Cornell in August to start my freshman year and I was wondering whether it is a good idea to bring my parents with me. Will they be useful during the first couple of days in which I move in or should I just save their plane ticket money?

In other words, is it worth it to come to cornell with your parents?

Almost everyone brings their parents.

^Yes…many incoming transfers brought their parents with them. I was one of them.

I assume they would rent a car…They will be useful in taking you to stores to pick up last minute stuff. If they are coming, I would suggest for you not to bring everything with you, but instead order them through Bed Bath and pick them up when you get to Ithaca. If they are flying with you, you’ll have more luggage allowance also. After your first year, you could store your things in Ithaca.

As a parent, it was important for me to see my kid off to college. Most people have their parents there. It’s probably more important/useful than parents weekend. Of course, many internationals come by themselves. If your parents could swing it, have them come. Ithaca is beautiful around that time. If they can’t come, there will be plenty of people to help you move. You should book your hotel now if necessary. Make sure the hotel has shuttle service if your parents are not coming.
