Does anybody know which of these art school has better reputation?
My major is fashion design, and would like to find out which school is better. so far, I have been accepted by parson. Pratt will send me the decision letter during next week.
Please feel free to leave any comment or anything you guys know about it. Thank you everybody!

Uh, Parsons hands down.

I agree, Parsons.

Pratt is a very good school but for fashion design I would choose Parsons (or FIT).

I think that different schools are better for different majors. Pratt is a good school, but for fashion design Momrath is correct that Parsons and FIT are the best. If money is no issue than go to Parsons, otherwise FIT would have been a good choice.

Don't downplay Pratt. It is very good in most design areas and is very well connected in NY.

Although Parsons may have a stronger reputation in Fashion, Pratt is considered no slouch.

I think for Fashion, in new york, Parsons really can't be beat. Their graduate success rate is beautiful - almost every young designer 'making it' in DT NYC has attended Parsons. This is a wide sweeping generalization, but they're usually much better conceptually and on the buisness end than kids who have gone elsewhere.

This isn't at ALL to say that Pratt isn't a great school, because it is! But Pratt's strong point really lies in the fine arts, and it doesn't have as well established of a reputation as parsons. That being said, the design program at Pratt is much smaller in terms of numbers of students, so if knowing everyone in your major and being very involved in a small community of designers is important to you, it may be worth giving Pratt a closer look :)

wow thank you so much guys! I knew this is the place where I can get all the school information. It definitely helped me understand both school much better. I decided to attend parson for this coming fall semester for fashion design. I want to thank everyone of you for all the truthful comments!

My daughter is at Pratt, although not a fashion major. She was accepted at both Pratt and Parsons. They are both very highly regarded schools, but VERY different. My daughter was at Parsons for about 15 minutes before she decided it was not for her. I strongly advise visiting both schools and making up your own mind. They both have great internship opportunities.

yes, I totally agree with you. Parson's school hallway is very narrow, also seems they needed some constructions. And pratt in the other hand are much more comfortable.

I'm trying to figure it out myself. I've been accepted at both and am having a tough time weighing my options. I'd rather live in Brooklyn because it's more laid back and from what I hear sounds more like a learning atmosphere. Some of my favorite painters went there too. Some have said it's a big party school for rich kids which made me very hesitant. I avoided applying at state schools for that reason. On the plus they offered me a scholarship and a pretty big grant.

Parsons on the other hand is internationally known for fashion design. It's the most reputable design school in the nation. They have insane connections. Almost every influential American fashion designer went to Parsons. I keep seeing them on t.v. for anything associated with fashion. Diane von Furstenberg is on the Board of Governors. I love her stuff. I'm still waiting on financial aid info but they said I could enter as a sophomore(which scares me a bit). I haven't completely looked through what they sent me yet.

I also got into Otis. Still waiting on Mica (which doesn't have fashion design as a major. They have it as a minor and Fiber art as a major. I made a pros and cons list though and Mica was pretty high for me. The students are working at the same places as Otis that major in fashion design. A big plus was the study abroad at Central St. Martins. They seem super friendly and the students work I seen is impressive even for professionals.

The reason I'm having such a tough decision is because I'm so into painting I'm not sure if I will change my mind halfway through and want to paint. I'm sort of looking for a place where I can smoothly switch majors if it came down to it(I'm looking for a killer art department as well as fashion). I should probably just get a grip and stop being so indecisive with my life.

My daughter is a fine arts major with a more liberal arts bent. She found the studio space at Parsons very cramped and found the space/light in the Pratt studios more creatively stimulating. She also heard that most Parsons students live in Brooklyn after their freshman year, and she didin't like the idea of commuting. She has found the work at Pratt very demanding (she would laugh at the idea of a rich party school). Make sure you look at the COURSE CATALOGS and the programs for each school. Pratt has a very rigorous 2 year foundation program (I think it has one which is fashion designer specific) which may not be what you are looking for. I am always amazed at how many students choose their colleges based on name recognition without having any idea of what the course requirements and program restictions are.

For anyone that had been accepted by parson for fall 2007, did you guys recieve the package that includes tuition, financial aid information etc yet?
I got accepted, but still didnt recieve mine yet. they said they would sent out around or on March 1st.

Also, when they will let you know weather you are eligible for scholarship or not?

artschoolmom:

I looked at the course requirements. I would be entering as a sophomore either way so foundation year would be skipped. Pratt's curriculum does seem more specific to majors.

I didn't know that about housing at Parsons...definitely something I'm going to have to check into. Parsons course description in the catalog is very vague. However, name recognition at a design school is highly important. I wouldn't say it's more important than curriculum but having the ability to offer an internship with someone is a big step to getting you in the door. Another reason I didn't apply to a state school.
This of course might not apply to a Fine Arts Major.

The person who said, "it was a rich party school" could have just been a slacker. I know there are going to be some people that have $ to waste and don't really belong at any art school. I'm just curious as to how many. I want to be surrounded by competition not keg parties and blunts. I'm not saying that's what Pratt has... I'm just saying that's what a student told me it has and I'm concerned about the seriousness of the students.

Thanks for the response. :)

Ticup: I haven't receive my financial aid package yet. No idea when.

Another thing I noticed was the number of instructors in the fashion department that were hired internally.

The fine art department looked really diverse.

Pratt Institute All The Way!

i have not received mine either. I called the school a week or two ago, they said they are sending it out asap. :(

valeripina: dont worry, you should be recieving anyday now. I just got mine few days ago. they usually process slower than what they said.

I found out that I have been accepted to both parson and Pratt. But still dont know where to go yet..

ticup,

did you receive fin-aid yet from either schools? i got mine. they hooked me up a little more than half paid for but i'm still super worried. i talked to my mom yesterday and she is giving excuses about not wanting to co-sign. she's in school for her masters right now and said they aren't going to let her because she doesn't have a job. i said my dad could co-sign until she gets her masters and gets a job... and she's like, " i'm not getting a job, i'm going for my phd "

my dad said he would co-sign for the stuff but i don't think it's fair putting it all on him especially when my mothers income is higher. she's driving me crazy.

is 75k in loans average for a BFA from parsons? they didn't set any college funds up at all for me. i'm not even sure if this is realistic.

anyone have recommendations? i'm still waiting on independent status.
