Parsons the School of Design Admission Results 2019 Fall

Hi everyone, I just received my decision and it was said that i was rejected. I applied for fashion design, which was an impulsive move seeing that most of my material falls under fine arts. I was pressured by my mother and went through deciding a major I wasn’t confident in but I know my portfolio is good enough to get in. I was wondering if anyone knows if there’s a way to appeal their decision- I might be in denial but I want to try everything before accepting the fact that I was rejected from one of my top dream schools I had wanted to get into since I started art.

I’m sorry to hear that melanixe.

DD got rejected. So it goes. She has other great options.

@vivienn.an @mfujiwater Congrats on strategic design and management! My daughter got into that program as well, early action. She’s a New Yorker originally but we moved to London when she was 11, then to Geneva for her last two years of high school. The family will be moving to Boston this summer, so we’ll all be in the States for her college years. DM if you want and I can connect you.

@artdreamer Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance! My daughter has heard from all other schools but one and then will make her decision. There are of course pros and cons for each of the schools so i don’t think it will be easy for her. We are visiting the New School, Sarah Lawrence and Clark U next week over her spring break - maybe one of those will rise to the top?? She is interested in both psychology and visual arts and has attended an arts specialty high school, so Parsons is a undeniable draw for her.

@rfm512 Thanks! And it sounds like your daughter has some fantastic options! My D was accepted to Tufts, MICA and Parsons, and was denied at Wash U in St. Louis. She’s still waiting to hear from Pratt, RISD, Boston U, NYU and Carnegie Mellon before making her choice. Depending on her options, we may also be making a trip to NYC as well as Baltimore and Pittsburgh to get a first hand feel for the schools. Thankfully she has already visited Boston and Providence, or else we’d be traveling all of April! She is drawn to both the idea of a larger university environment as well as that of an art school, so it will be interesting to see how she weighs the pros and cons of each one. She still has quite a few admissions decisions pending, however, so she’s waiting till she has a definitive list before diving into the selection-making process. We’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts about your Parsons trip next week-- please keep us posted!

if you receive merit is it in your acceptance letter?

The website finally loaded! I had some technical difficulties trying to open my admissions letter at first (for some reason it said I had it open in another window), but I WAS ACCEPTED INTO EUGENE LANG!!! I was also offered a merit scholarship of 20,000 dollars.

Hello! I was also accepted to Communications Design with a $20,000 merit scholarship

@jupiter1213 Yes, my D’s merit money was mentioned in the acceptance letter

Wow @artdreamer! Your daughter has applied to many wonderful places and will certainly have a difficult choice to make in the end! We know kids from my D’s art school that have attended MICA, Tufts, Parsons, Pratt and RISDI and we have heard good things about each and every one!. My brother-in-law got his masters at MICA and now teaches at Coper Union. Interestingly enough, he personally recommended MICA but not CU to my daughter but that could have been due to her specific art interests.

I also have a close friend from high school that attended both Pratt and Parsons and we are fortunate to be able to stay in her apartment next week in Manhattan!! She loved both! We visited Pratt and the New School last October and we were definitely impressed with the facilities at both but it is the lack of a traditional campus and the distance of the dorms that is a little off-putting for my D. She loved the Pratt campus and Brooklyn is such a cool place to live now! Pratt does not have the same psychology offering as the New School, so my D elected not to apply. We’re also going to be sure to tour the New School dorms this time. The dorms are pretty expensive and the price they have figured into the housing costs is of an “economy double”. Its hard to imagine what would be considered “economy” in Manhattan and we need to see just how small it is! :)))

@rfm512 That’s cool that you know someone who attended both Parson and Pratt. I had a difficult time choosing what schools to apply to (mainly because of how much it cost to apply). A person at my mothers office attended Parsons and highly recommended it. Did your friend from high school have anything he/she didn’t like about Parsons? I read that some of the students who attend are “snobby” (a lot of what I’ve read has come from College Confidential) and that there have been problems at the school recently (information I got from watching a youtuber named Ella Snyder. She goes to Parsons).

I really like this school, and have since I was in middle school. My only fear is that when I get there it won’t live up to my expectations. I am unable to travel and tour The New School. Could you post your thoughts on the dorms? Also, has your daughter received financial aid yet? I’m still waiting on mine.

Sorry for asking so many question!

@clementimme No problem with the questions! I am happy to help in whatever way possible!

My friend who went to both schools liked them both. I think that she appreciated that Parsons had a more cutting edge feel to classes and majors offered, but definitely liked Pratt and their campus as well. Pratt definitely feels more “homey” and Brooklyn is a really nice place to live these days. (We have family living in Brooklyn.) I know my friend definitely had issues with housing at Parsons but that was a while back and the dorm situation has definitely improved. (She actually spent a night or two sleeping on a park bench!!) I’ll be sure to let you know what we think after we tour. I have heard complaints about dorm room and meal plans options and expense at Parsons.

We don’t qualify for financial aid so I’m sorry, I can’t give you any extra insight into that. Even though money is not a huge issue for us, we are still hesitant about the cost of sending our kid to Parsons for school. We’ve been told that life in the city and at The New School is just very expensive and costs can spiral out of control quickly there. One other negative we have heard about is that the New School seems not to be the best in terms of organization. Not to be overly negative because ALL schools have their pros and cons, but the “unexpected expense” issue seems to be the one we hear about over and over. That being said, with the right financial aid package, it might definitely be an ideal place!

I see you applied to Eugene Lang - can you tell me what areas of study you’re interested in? Were you considering minoring at Parsons or eventually applying for the BA/BFA? My daughter is interested in combining psychology studies and art.

Son finally got through the portal today and was accepted into Integrated Design, with a $20K per year scholarship. It’s great to see him so proud and happy.

@rfm512 I haven’t made my final decision on what I want to major in. I was accepted into the Liberal Arts Self-Designed Major. I want to work in film, but I am also interested in environmental studies. I’m not considering minoring at Parsons at the moment. Though, while I was working on my application last year, I was originally planning on applying to Parsons. I learned about it when I was younger and was able to see it (on the outside) when I went to New York for my 13th birthday. I ended up applying to Eugene Lang because it seemed more flexible and I did not have time to complete a portfolio (to be honest my art is okay, but I don’t think I would have been accepted if I applied in that area).

That sucks to here that people have been having the same “unexpected expense” problem. In order for me to attend the New School, I will be in a substantial amount of debt once I graduate. You’re lucky your daughter won’t be! Lol. I hope I don’t hear any other bad things about the school. I’m having a hard time making a decision on where I want to go. I applied to 5 schools and was accepted into 4: Eugene Lang, DePaul University, Mount Saint Mary’s University (which I will most likely not attend because I am not religious and they require I take several religion related courses), and the University of Kentucky (where a handful of my family members have attended and my great uncle was a professor who was apart of the process to detect neurological diseases caused by the equine herpesvirus).

Hopefully I can make my decision by May. I think I will either go with DePaul or Eugene Lang. The areas I want to study have more opportunities in those areas of the US. I would have responded earlier, but I was out all day!

Also, does anyone know where to connect with other students if you do decide to enroll? It would be nice to know people ahead of time!

Thank you for sharing your insight!

Hey everyone! I was accepted to Parsons yesterday!! My decision letter says that I got a $24,000 merit scholarship and there’s a button on my portal to see my FAFSA financial aid letter but when I click on it I can’t get my letter. Has anyone else had this problem??

I have also had the same problem @iwanteverything. I’m glad it’s not just me. I’m going to contact the financial aid office on Monday. Also, congrats on getting into Parson! What is your intended major?

I answered my own question on how to get connected with other accepted students. It is through a facebook group. You should see it on your admissions hub page. You have to fill out a google form before and submit your information before they allow you to participate in the group.

Has anyone else joined?

@clementimme ok I was planning on calling them too, and thank you!!! i applied for design and technology but I think my heart might be in product design? im not really sure, it seems like d&t is geared towards like game design and that’s not something I want to do — I’m more interested in interactive/app design but idk!!! what about you??

@clementimme I see! Thanks for the info! It does seem like Lang would be a good fit for you! The tuition is not crazy high there - it seems the extra expense arises more from living in a very expensive part of Manhattan. Do you happen to know anyone else living in NY? I know some students have cut their expenses by living in Bed Stuy or other more affordable neighborhoods and not relying solely on housing and meal plan options from the school. (The kids at Pratt did that as well.) The New School is in the same area as both NYU and Cooper Union and many kids take the opportunity to live with friends from the other colleges as well. You seem to have some good choices - Im sure things will work out!
