Part of many clubs vs. Part of a few?

Would it be more beneficial to me (for college applications) to be involved in quite a few clubs at school (say, 4-5) or be a little bit more dedicated to only a couple? I feel that the right answer would be being really devoted to only a couple, but many of the graduating seniors from last year who got into great schools were the type that just did everything (i.e., many clubs, honors students, sports, music, other out of school organizations), so I don't want to accidentally stumble down the "wrong" path. I thought maybe I would start my own club at school too, and if you could help me with any tips to get started that would be great. I don't really know how to begin recruiting people, or manage finances/paperwork, etc. Thanks!

Personally, I say dominate at one or a few things instead of being average at several things.
Also, there really isn’t a “right” or a “correct” path when it comes to college admissions, especially with colleges such as Stanford. (Assuming that’s where you want to attend by your username ;)) Whatever you become involved in, make sure it’s something that interests you or is a passion.

I think starting your own club would be a great idea! Well, first of all, you need to decide what club you would like to start. Depending on your school, you will most likely have to run your club idea through your guidance counselor or principal and get their approval. They also may be able to give you assistance on how to establish your club. After you do that, then you can move on to recruiting other students and everything else.

Quality > Quantity

Thanks guys!! The main thing I’m worried about with starting a club is making sure it really stands out-my school is home to SO many, many small organizations and clubs-maybe 80ish. Any tips on that or getting people to join?

1) Go up to random people and yell, “JOIN MY CLUB!”
2) Tape a sign to your back saying, “JOIN MY CLUB” and walk around

Just kidding.

Could you possibly have it announced over the announcements? What kind of club? I can give you a better answer then.

Haha-great first answer CE527EM.
I was thinking somewhere along the lines of one of those helping the community-type clubs-and I know that at first I won’t have too many members but I am hoping to enlarge it gradually to at least 40 people. The largest clubs on campus are usually those that say they are helpful on college apps, and although I am starting this club to supplement my extra curricular activities, I don’t want to attract only people who are simply interested in having something to put on their college apps.
