So I'm gonna be a sophomore next year. My class schedule is going to be a little crowded so I don't know if I should pick up a part-time job in addition to all the school and extra curricular work I have. I don't have any loans or anything I need to pay off (scholarship) so the money I make would go towards just random spending. Plus I can get references and job experience. Those are the only benefits. The cons would be that I would have less Time to study. So what should I do?

It all depends on how demanding your classes are and how many hours you plan on working. Since the beginning of my sophmore year ive been balancing a 30 hour work week and full time classes. My first semester included general chem 2 w/ lab, calculus 3, and an art history. This semester i am taking general bio, physio psych and a GE. So it is definitely do-able but i pretty much had no time other than school and work. So if you plan to be a full time student with fairly difficult classes and you want to do extra curriculars i wouldnt reccomend more than 20 hours a week.

Do you have any work-study options? Some of those jobs (such as working in the library) allow you free time to study while at work.

Otherwise I would wait until the semester starts and you see your course syllabi. This way you know how many tests, papers, and projects you’ll be doing for each class. Don’t pick up a job until you know realistically how much time you can devote. Stores are always hiring like crazy around October for the holiday season, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find work at that time.

I would recommend that you see how things go at first. You never know when a particular class will be incredibly demanding. There is also the possibility that you will find some new extracurricular stuff that you want to get involved in. Once you get a feel for the schedule, you will probably be able to tell if you will have time for a job.

Have you considered a job that will allow you study time? There are jobs that are pretty boring and very undemanding that would allow you to read and study between tasks. I knew a guy that worked a late shift as a security guard, ok sounds scary to me, but all he had to do was watch a bunch of closed circuit TV’s. He had all night to do whatever he wanted and would only need to call the police if he saw something going on.

The same idea holds true for different positions. Babysitting at night when the kids are sleeping. Working the early or late shift at a hotel front desk would be quiet. Just saying that you might be able to find a job that allows for some personal time when you work.

10 hours a week will be fine, even if you have a busy schedule. Even 15 would be okay. It really doesn’t take up that much time. Work-study jobs are really great because you can often do homework while you are at work.

desk jobs are the best. the pay is pitiful, but you can do homework or surf fb

it depends on your classes
