JMU has quite a party school reputation. If you are not into drinking, will you fit into the school's social scene?

I am currently a sophomore at JMU and the party scene is only really prevalent if you want it to be. There are hundreds of clubs on campus to become involved with and many have activities to do nights and weekends as an alternative to partying. JMU or any college for that matter “party school” or not is what you make it, people who want to party and people who do not don’t.

^ Agreed. My cousin goes there as a Econ major and he loves the “studying atmosphere” (direct quote).

It all comes down to what you make of your college experience. A lot of people on CC worry about a school’s “party” reputation, but the botton line is this : EVERY university or college has a “party” scene that is formidable, but also offers great academic opportunities to students. If you wish to ignore the party scene at a certain university, in this case, JMU, as evidenced by my cousin, you WILL be successful in your studying. The “party scene” labeling is a bit misleading – People have gone to Harvard Grad from UGA ( a “#1 party school” ) and it just goes to show you that college offers everything. For serious students, thus, JMU is a great choice.

Thanks for the reassuring words!

Honestly, JMU is a huge party school. I mean there are some people that don’t party but the few that I know that don’t go out all want to transfer. Since there isn’t much to do in Harrisonburg, being a rural town, partying is really one of the only things people do. Also many people skip class on Fridays because basically everyone is hung over from Thursday night (yes Thursday night is a very common night to go out). If you are really not into the party scene I might consider looking at other schools. Hope this helps, Goodluck in your college search!
